Ken Resnick Debuts Podcast on VOC Nation Discusses AWA, Verne Gagne, etc..

https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/vocnation/episodes/2019-10-09T20_45_02-07_00

Highlights..

On Ken Resnick’s debut show on VOC Nation Wrestling with History, we covered his start in broadcasting and his time in the AWA.  Ken talked about the mood in the locker room as Vince was getting his national endeavor started, the impact of Hulk Hogan leaving, the difference in pay, and much more.  Here are some of the highlights:

How Ken got into broadcasting:  “I had no broadcast training at all…I was with Chrysler doing well as the corporate district sales manager.  A good friend of mine was a sportscaster in the twin cities.  He came to me one night and asked if I could get off from work on a Friday night to be his statistician for a state high school basketball tournament…they had extra TV time between games, and we ended up analyzing the previous game…they liked it well enough so they used me the entire weekend.  A week later, (my friend Tom) asked me if I ever thought about a career in broadcasting.  A news affiliate in Rochester was looking for a new sports director and asked me to come down for an audition…I drove down, auditioned, and 10 days later they called and offered me the job.”

How he got hired by the AWA:  “I watched wrestling at the time but wasn’t a huge fan…I was doing (a celebrity tennis show) and Vern Gagne came up to me and started talking to me.  A week or so later, the operator at the station told me that Verne Gagne was on the phone and wanted to talk to me.  He invited me to lunch, and offered me the job…so my career (start) had nothing to do with education, it was about who I knew and being in the right place at the right time.”

On getting started on AWA TV:  “Gene was still there but all of the interviews were market specific.  There were days where you’d do 50 to 60 interviews working in something local so it gave the appearance that it was being taped in that city.  (Because of the workload) they were looking for someone to be Gene’s backup.  I worked in the office for a few weeks, then the plan was for me to start doing interviews for the small markets while Gene did the larger markets.  We were working together and all of the sudden Gene (gave his notice) and said he was going to the WWF and suddenly I was the guy.”

On backstage reaction to Gene Okerlund leaving:  “They weren’t happy about it.  They certainly weren’t happy when Hulk (Hogan) left, and Hulk and Gene were good friends and they really had something good going together.  It didn’t come as a huge surprise, but to say that Verne and Greg weren’t thrilled with it would be an understatement.”

On Verne and Greg Gagne being difficult to work with:  “Blackjack Mulligan was in the territory teaming with Blackjack Lanza.  Blackjack Mulligan didn’t like they way he was being treated, left for lunch and never came back.  Looking back, they probably would wish they treated some of the people that worked there a little better, especially since they were facing a hostile takeover (from the WWF).”

On why Hulk Hogan jumped to the WWF:  “In those days, Verne had the attitude that the talent wasn’t entitled to any percentage of the merchandise.  He took the stance that without the AWA, these guys wouldn’t be anything.  That was a big factor in Hulk leaving.  He thought that he should be getting a big percentage of the merchandise sales, and Vern was not willing to do that.  Vince was more than happy to do that.”

On the AWA’s reaction to the original Wrestlemania:  “They could see the talent pool that Vince was building, and while his father honored the unwritten tool of territories, Vince Jr. was trying to go national.  No one could have imagined what it was going to become.  From Verne’s standpoint, he didn’t think a closed circuit in New York would have any traction in Denver, Salt Lake, or San Francisco.  (Vince) pioneered bringing music and celebrities to tie into wrestling.  It was those things that gave non wrestling fans a curiosity to want to see what it was all about.  At that time, wresting wasn’t mainstream.”

Content Only "Available Exclusively" To PWInsider's VIP Service? Yeah Right, Wanna Bet?

Once again the people over at PWInsider make a claim that isn't true, and that is absolute bullshit.

Here's their claim.

BUT.. Lookie lookie.. Lookie at what can easily be found, where? You guessed it. Over on YouTube.

Yeah, sure looks real "Exclusive' to me, ROFLMAO!

So for the people who aren't dumb enough to pay for a service so you can watch things you can see for free elsewhere.. Here's the link where you can see this so called, ahem.. 'cough cough' EXCLUSIVE CONTENT (LOL)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SFpz2hS-l8

You'd think PWInsider would learn by now, as many times as I can bust them (and other sites) for making these bullshit claims.. But.. As you can see, they never really do learn, do they. You can thank me now.

You're welcome.

Last Nights Incredible Ending (KC Navarro Dan Maff JT Dunn Jessika Havok) What! Wrestling

If WWE Won't Give Mike Bennett His Release, He Could Always Do, THIS.. LOL..

Hell even Brock left WWE and went to Japan defying a no compete clause, LOL.

There was a lot of controversy as woman wrestler Giulia of Ice Ribbon asked for her release from the promotion yesterday and then showed up on the Stardom show earlier today and was announced as the new signee.  Ice Ribbon claimed she was under contract and while she asked for her release, she had not been released. Ice Ribbon said that they wanted to set up a schedule for her to have a farewell but she insisted on being released yesterday.  They said they did not give her a release and she was advertised for shows upcoming and in Japan false advertising of talent is looked upon very negatively. Ice Ribbon said that Giulia has not turned in a formal resignation letter nor returned her Ice Ribbon health insurance card, nor did they receive anything from the promotion she was looking to transfer to (Stardom).  They said they would announce any changes in upcoming shows as soon as possible. Rossy Ogawa, who runs Stardom, said that he was under the impression there was no contract between Giulia and Ice Ribbon

What Happens When WWE Doesn't Use You Right- MIKE KANELLIS REQUESTS RELEASE FROM WWE

Mike Kanellis has requested his release from WWE.
Kanellis announced the news on Twitter today, though he didn't reveal whether or not WWE has responded to his request:
Today I asked for my release from WWE. I want to thank everyone in the company who has helped me out and who I have shared a locker room with. I love you all. I've been with the company for almost 3 years and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity. However it is time for me to move on. I am only 34 years old and feel I have way to much left in the tank.
Working 1 day a week is just not going to cut it for me. I came to WWE to work and that opportunity does not exist right now. I re-signed with the company back in June because I thought it was what was best for my family, and maybe from a financial standpoint it was. But I quickly realized that bringing my work frustrations and misery home with me, is not good for my family and I no longer want my daughter to constantly see me come home defeated, sad and angry. It's not fair to her or my wife. Being a pro wrestler was and is my lifelong dream and I'm just not ready to give that up yet. I wasted 4 years of my life addicted to drugs and not caring, when I should have been having the best matches of my life. Now that I am clean, sober and motivated, I want to have those 30 minute matches. I want to travel the world and wrestle in front of UK crowds, German crowds, Japanese Crowds. I want to feel the love and excitement wrestling once gave me. I also want my daughter to be able to see me wrestle. I want her to see her daddy work for his money. I've never been ok with just collecting a paycheck and I can't in good conscience tell my daughter she has to work her ass off to get ahead in life, then not do it myself. I don't know what the future holds, but for the first time in a long time, I'm hopeful and excited. Thank you to everyone who has ever supported me and had my back. I love you.
Tye Dillinger (now known as Shawn Spears) publicly announced that he had requested his release this February and had it granted. Luke Harper revealed that he had requested his release in April, but WWE didn't grant it. Harper returned to WWE television last month as part of Erick Rowan's feud with Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan.
Mike and Maria Kanellis signed new contracts with WWE this June, with Dave Meltzer reporting that they're five-year deals.
In July, Maria announced that she was pregnant with her and Mike's second child. Her pregnancy has been worked into WWE storylines as part of an angle where Maria has been humiliating Mike.
Mike appeared on this past Friday's 205 Live episode and helped Brian Kendrick win his no disqualification match against Akira Tozawa. Mike wasn't listed in the draft pools for either night of the WWE Draft.

Nick Aldis Says He'd Like To See NWA Become The "HBO Boxing Of Pro Wrestling"

NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis appeared on the This is the NWA podcast to talk about his time in TNA, the differences between wrestling and entertainment, and advice he has for younger wrestlers.
Aldis began wrestling for NWA in late 2017 and since then has become the NWA Worlds Champion on two occasions. Aldis recalled when he was first approached being told what NWA President Billy Corgan's vision was for the promotion and was then asked what he'd like to see from the NWA, which was to make pro wrestling matches feel like prize fights.
"[David Lagana] said ya know, Billy basically wants the wrestling he watched on TV,'" Aldis began. "He wants a modern equivalent to that. He wants men cutting promos and having physical rough and tumble wrestling matches. I said, 'That I can do.' That was them describing their vision of what they wanted and then they asked 'What is your vision?' I said, 'I wanted matches to feel like prize fights.'
"I said 'I'm sitting here watching the build to Mayweather / McGregor and it's just the best s--t I've ever seen. It's fantastic theater. They're taking everything that pro wrestling did first, doing it better and pro wrestling's not even doing it anymore. We're just literally handing over all of this money to MMA and boxing. We gave them secret sauce and then stopped using the secret sauce ourselves."
With wrestling have a big presence on TV and the internet today, Aldis was asked what type of fan the NWA is looking to pull in.
"My major concern is that the already somewhat whittled down niche audience compared to better days for our business is gonna be divided up even further. But, we're not in the same business. We're going after a different market. If wrestling fans who predominantly exist in the current form decide not to watch our product, we're okay with that because we're trying to go after a different audience like any smart business would. We're trying to go after a different demographic, and that demographic is fans who've fallen off for whatever reason because they preferred a certain style of stuff.
"Ya know, it's so hard to state any of these intentions without seeming like you're projecting your own opinion, but my opinion has nothing to do with it. This is one-hundred percent a business decision in the sense that there sure are a lot of folks who aren't watching wrestling each week anymore. What did they used to watch? I can bet you a great deal used to watch the NWA and WCW."
Aldis was then spoke about where he saw himself and the NWA in the next five years. The champ felt like NWA could become something like the "HBO Boxing of pro wrestling"
"You know I'd like to think that in five years I'll be firmly established as a top performer and a top attraction, a sort of respectable OG character. I think that the NWA, if we keep on our current trajectory and our current milestones, within five years we could be a very solidly established brand, attraction and organization. I think brand is the best way to put it because I could see us working with multiple different companies here and there but ultimately what I've always wanted for us is to be like the HBO Boxing of pro wrestling."

PAUL ADAMS, 1990s INDEPENDENT MANAGER STANDOUT IN NASHVILLE & NORTHEAST, PASSES AWAY

Larry Goodman wrote the following.

Paul Adams was one of a kind. He touched the lives of many people in pro wrestling, more than what he probably ever knew, Paul was the connection between wrestling people that otherwise would not have been connected. The outpouring of remembrances about Paul posted online has come from all corners. He was a very funny guy. He had an acerbic wit, as former PW Insider writer Jess McGrath put it. Adams was a also deeply caring person, which was not necessarily evident on the surface. No doubt, a great wrestling mind was lost with his untimely death.

Adams was raised in Irvington, NY. He started doing a wrestling newsletter called "The Examiner" before breaking into wrestling with Larry Sharpe and Dennis Corraluzzo in the early 90s. He did a little of everything for the promotion along with appearing on their shows in Clementon, NJ. Adams managed a team callled the Super Jocks who feuded with the Spiders, later known as The Headbangers in WWE. Chris Candido, Balls Mahoney and Sandman also worked those shows.

Adams then worked with Mike O'Brien and Mike Henry  to start up Northeast Wrestling. Adams thought they could do well running shows in Maine because there was very little pro wrestling there, so they ran a few shows as Maine Event wrestling using Fabulous Moolah and Mae Young before heading to Nashville.

Nashville was supposed to a short-term deal, Adam ended up staying there for the rest of his career. He started managed for Bert Prentice's Music City Wrestling as "Towel Boy" Paul Adams. Adams lived with Prentice for a time, an experience that became the source of many great stories. The towel on his shoulder became a signature prop that he carried with him for the rest of his career. He was a gifted talker, who was often also featured on commentary.

Although they had vastly different styles as managers, Adams was like Georgia's Jeff G. Bailey in that they had big league ability, but reached their prime at a time when the use of managers in pro wrestling was beginning to fade.
Adams was best known for his run with Southern Allstar Wrestling.  SAW was collaboration between Reno Riggins as promoter, Tim Thomason in charge of the television production. and Adams handling the booking along with an on-camera role as manager of the top heels. SAW had television in Nashville for years and ran shows at the Nashville Fairgrounds that drew close to 1000, featuring stars like Chase Stevens, Kid Kash, David Young, Andy Douglas, Derrick King, Vordell Walker, Jeff "The Crippler" Daniels, Rick Santel, Wolfie D and Shane Williams.

Adams and Young were best friends. They had a unique chemistry that led to a numerous comical vignettes that were memorable for their hilarity. They were both willing to look as ridiculous as necessary to make something work.
Adams always had multiple entertaining stories to tell. He particularly loved telling stories about Prentice, who Adams remained in contact with long after his Music City Wrestling days were over.

Adams had an eye for talent and a lot of wrestlers got meaningful opportunities through Adams with SAW. Among the wrestler with Georgia connections that worked for Adams are Nick Iggy (who got his start there), former Georgia Wrestler of the Year Phil Shatter (NXT's Jaxson Ryker), Steven Walters (WWE star Dash Wilder), Eight-time Georgia Technical Wrestler of the Year Kyle Matthews, former Georgia Announcer of the Year Dan Masters and current ACTION ring announcer and SCI promoter Scott Hensley.

Adams was sporadically involved in pro wrestling after SAW. He took a job with the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. One of his responsibilities was running the wrestling events associated with the annual state fair.

In 2013, David Marquez brought Adams on board as the booker and local promoter for Southeastern Championship Wrestling, which was part of Marquez's United Wrestling Network. The concept was a TV studio wrestling program out in Knoxville. It was not a satisfying experience for either Marquez or Adams, and the project came to an end after a couple of tapings.

The last time I spoke Adams was  September. He seemed content with life. He said he had been contacted by WWE a number of months earlier and just had a meeting in Stamford. It was no secret that Adams had been plagued by substance abuse issue over the years. He was scheduled to have back and neck surgery this month. His mother his having body flown to New York for an autopsy.

Chris Jericho On How He Helped NJPW Become Hot In The U.S

Now a 29 year veteran in the pro wrestling business, Chris Jericho never thought he would ever wrestle past the age of 30.
"In 1990, I remember telling Lance Storm that I don't think I'll be wrestling past 30," Jericho said during a recent interview with Ariel Helwani on the MMA Show. "You realize that when you get close to 30, I'm just now figuring out what the hell is going on. In 2005, I left for a couple of years, and then very sporadically in 2010, since my band Fozzy took off. Fozzy is a priority.
"What really invigorated me was two things. One, was when I came back in 2016 and I met Kevin Owens. We had great chemistry. We could do something together. We became the hottest act in the WWE, and we had the greatest angle. It was so much fun. And then learning from the new generation of guys like Seth Rollins, Owens, Sami Zayn, and Roman Reigns.
"Then I left (the WWE) to start the Fozzy tour and our record "Judas" took off huge. But then, this idea came to work with Kenny Omega and New Japan, and we did the Tokyo Dome. We sold out the Tokyo Dome. We did huge business on the New Japan subscription site. When I got there I was like I can do anything I want. There's no restrictions, there's no Vince McMahon filter. Not that it's a bad thing, but when you work in the WWE, there's a lot of layers of government that you have to go through to get an idea passed. And in New Japan, there was only one, me. When I was finished with that, I enjoyed myself so much, I kind of reignited the fire of the artistic side of things. I decided to do a couple of matches in Japan and that was when I met The Young Bucks, Cody Rhodes, Kenny, and then the Tony Khan thing came up. When it came through (AEW), I really wanted to do this because of the artistic freedom that I would have away from Vince's system, which was such a new beginning for me. It made me excited to be in wrestling."
Jericho did mention in the podcast that he is considered to be an exclusive member of AEW for the next three years. He, however, is still allowed to work for New Japan Pro Wrestling in between.
"I can do New Japan shows, if it doesn't conflict with AEW. I did one earlier this year, where I had an IWGP Championship match against Kazuchika Okada. I might do some more with them. But it's pretty much exclusive."

New Japan Pro Wrestling has pioneered the way for many great wrestling talent past or present. Jericho mentioned that he believes that NJPW should be considered part of the wrestling renaissance of the modern era, because of all the great things they have done to draw in audiences from around the world. From creating groups like The Bullet Club, Chaos, Los Ingobernables de Japon, and The Elite, to putting on star-studded matches like Jericho versus Omega at Wrestle Kingdom 12, they have always found a way to draw in both traditional and non-traditional fans.
"It did start with New Japan," Jericho stated. "I'm not putting too much credit into my own credit box, but when I did the Tokyo Dome show with Omega, the New Japan World subscriptions went from 35,000 to 100,000. It was because people wanted to see that match. If you were a wrestling fan that paid attention to more than just WWE, you wanted to see that match. As a result, people started checking it out for the first time to see Jericho versus this guy, Kenny Omega. But they also saw The Young Bucks, Okada, Kota Ibushi, Rhodes, Juice Robinson, Hangman Page, Tetsuya Naito, and all these other guys.
"So, New Japan became very hot. It came to the States, they were selling out. They were (the fans) familiar with these cast of characters. Then when the Tony Khan thing came up, and AEW, you kind of knew those characters from New Japan."
Regardless of whether Jericho is wrestling in AEW, NJPW, or both, one thing is for sure, he doesn't plan on walking away from the squared circle anytime soon. In fact, Jericho noted that he is currently the happiest he has ever been in his career, and he has no plans on slowing down anytime soon.
"I always answer that (about when was he the happiest in his career), because they'll ask me 'What's your favorite era of Chris Jericho?' And I say now," Jericho declared. "Because if I say back then, then I'm not paying attention to right now."

Nick Aldis Talks Backstage Environment During His TNA Days, Wrestlers Putting Their Trust In WWE

NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis appeared on the This is the NWA podcast to talk about his time in TNA, the differences between wrestling and entertainment, and advice he has for younger wrestlers.
Aldis worked for TNA from 2000 until 2008 and was asked about what the backstage moral was like during his tenure there. Aldis felt like reports that come out of TNA were always blown up for no reason. He noted many WWE Superstars that came over felt like TNA was calmer backstage than in WWE.
"To give context to what I'm saying here, so I don't want anyone to think that what I'm saying is the case today," Aldis said. "But Ken [Anderson] and I were talking about when we were there people used to like to run it down, despite the fact that it was a number two promotion, a really good, viable alternative for people which is always healthy for business. Anything that would happen backstage, the sheets would just blow it up like 'Oh, it's chaos' because they wanted it to be like WCW.
"The atmosphere backstage was always great! Obviously we had a very WCW-esque approach in the sense of like 'Oh, this guy's leaving WWE? Cool! Let's give him a job.' There was some of that in the water supply, but all I would hear from all of those guys was about how much tension and how careful they had to be at WWE, how much politics there was backstage, but how here at TNA they loved it because everybody was just going about their business, everybody was just cool with each other and there were no rules, no heat or no bulls---. And I don't mean there were no rules as in everyone gets to do what they want, but I mean no silly locker room rules. There wasn't all this unnecessary etiquette bulls---."
That wasn't to say things were perfect in TNA when some of the talent wasn't being used effectively due to a bloated roster.
"Some of the dumb stuff that happened, we'd all be shaking our heads," Aldis responded. "And we would all get frustrated when you have a card that's like, 'Okay, let me get this straight. A live event that has Kurt Angle, AJ Styles, Jeff Hardy, Beer Money, Samoa Joe, the X-Division guys, all this young talent and like, we've got 200 people here? Someone's not doing their job, guys. Because Jeff Hardy could draw 3,000 people by himself."
When it comes to working in wrestling and other entertainment, Aldis feels like wrestler really have to protect their brand, especially if it's their own name. Actors can have a bad role on a show, and recover, but in wrestling that may not happen.
"Take any show, like Game of Thrones, if there's some character that just doesn't register with anyone they'll just say we won't give that a lot of attention next season," Aldis said. "That actor isn't marred for life. In wrestling it doesn't work like that. And it gets even more cloudy if your character is you. If you use your real name, you have a responsibility to protect your own product.
"I made this analogy to John Gaburick when we were having one of these discussions. If I work in construction and someone gives me blueprints that fundamentally won't work and I still build that house, then that house falls down. People aren't going to walk by and say, who designed that house? They're going to say, who built that house? You can't go 'Oh, well that's what they asked me to do.' Nobody cares."
For many wrestlers, WWE has always been the top of the mountain, but Aldis says that may not be worth the climb. With a company that's so big, the NWA Champion felt wrestlers are pretty much handing over what they've built for themselves and hoping WWE doesn't "break it."
"Your goal should be to be a star and draw money, not just to wrestle for the WWE," Aldis advised. "Because guess what? Every single person that goes there, or at least 99% of them all think they can headline WrestleMania. If your only goal is to go to the WWE, you're putting your destiny into someone else's hands. You're basically working all the way up to this point and then going like 'Here you go. Don't break it.'
"They don't care enough about any one person to go 'Oh, I better hope this is the vision he had for himself.' They can't do that. That's the nature of the beast. You can't say anything without it becoming an indictment and that's not what I'm saying. I just came to this epiphany that, God, I've been sort of chasing that dragon for a long time. If I catch it, what happens?

NWA Owner Billy Corgan On Parallels Between Pro Wrestling And UFC, Developing NWA In His Vision

It's no secret that pro wrestling influences many things from pop culture to even other sports. One of those sports is MMA and specifically the Ultimate Fighting Championship. There are aspects of UFC that are seemingly taken directly from pro wrestling and fans of both sports have noticed.
NWA President Billy Corgan pointed out the paraelles between wrestling and UFC in a recent interview with the Remotely Interested Wrestling podcast.
"You'll see it with UFC matchups - they don't work babyface-heel. Sometimes, they work heel-heel," said Corgan. "Some of the biggest matches are heel-heel. Just guys cutting the sh*t out of each other. Look at Khabib [Nurmagomedov] and [Conor] McGregor - I mean who is the baby face in that? To their fans they're baby faces but from a wrestling point they are both heels…"
Corgan is coming upon his two-year anniversary as NWA's owner and he admits the first two years have been more about developing NWA into his own vision. He talked about being patient in building out the company and stressed that how the company looks now isn't necessarily how it will look in the future.
"It's very hard for people to understand. And, I don't mean it in any condescending way… If you're gonna truly grow a business, there are things you are going to do that you are just gonna have to accept in Year 2, you are not going to do in Year 6," stated Corgan. "But, if you do it right in Year 2 you are going to get to Year 6…
"You know, we have had very good partnership relationships with Ring of Honor and stuff like that where we have been able to use their stage and to work within their world. So, this is a big thing. Now, we are stepping out on our own stage. It took a long time to get here. I could have blown this money right out the door. And, we could have done exactly what we are doing. But, it took this much time to actually build the relationships with talent even or talent to buy into the idea of like why would I sign with you as opposed to another company when I could be on national TV, even though I am making less money… to explain to talent this is a different vision here."
Under Corgan, NWA is embracing the old-school presentation of wrestling that many other promotions are shying away from.

"We think there's a balance point between what's called the traditional value of wrestling, which never gets old, and then an innovative position which I think only I would take on. And, we think in that balance point - and where we have shown flashes of it – we think we can not only exist as a standalone brand within the market… We are going back to the old school Saturday morning format… No ring entrances. No music. Old school," said Corgan.
"We want the rough and tumble atmosphere."
