Raven Reminisces About His ECW Run, How The Internet Would Have Affected The Company

For someone who started his career as a manager and a nondescript mid-carder, the fact that Raven became one of the biggest stars in ECW history is amazing. He was a two-time ECW World Champion and one of the faces of the promotion during its ascent in the mid-90s.
Raven credits ECW's rise with Paul Heyman being an innovator and thinking outside the box. Raven joined Booker T's podcast where he discussed Heyman being a visionary and why ECW benefitted the entire wrestling industry.
"It was crazy because they were just on the cusp of getting big, so I got there right in time just riding the wave," Raven said on joining ECW in late 1994. "I was there for the two years when they were the most influential. They revolutionized the business in a sense because the business had gotten really stale where you'd have the old-timers would sit in a hold for like 20 minutes, they wouldn't even work a hold. Paul Heyman had said that we were changing that.
"They changed the music. They changed the sound. You know what I mean? He borrowed from a lot of places so it wasn't like he created the whole thing, but he was smart enough to coalesce all these elements where whether it was the cruiserweights he got from Mexico and then he got the music and stuff from Memphis. He got stuff from FMW [Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling], the violence from Japan in FMW and then he just put it all together into a soup. He picked all the right ingredients and knew how to stir the pot."
The internet and dirt sheets were just starting up during ECW's rise and social media was non-existent. Raven believes that if ECW had come along a couple of years later when these things were popular then the promotion would have taken off and could still be around today.
"I definitely think it would have spread further. They came so close to picking up the No. 2 spot when WCW was going out of business. Then they were put on Spike TV before it was Spike. The network just didn't get behind it," revealed Raven. "There is so many what-ifs, but I try not to dwell on the past. I look back fondly, but I hate to play the what-if game because there were so many things that could have happened - so many things that could have gone right and so many things that could have gone wrong too.
"But it's a moment in time and I guess that is what makes it so special too because it is a moment in time and it just happened and it won't happen again."

Eric Bischoff Reveals How Much Virgil Made In WCW

Former WCW president Eric Bischoff recently held a Q&A session on his 83 Weeks podcast. Bischoff was asked about Virgil's six-figure WCW contract.
Virgil signed with WCW in 1996 and was named the head of security for nWo. Bischoff said he respected Virgil's career in WWE prior to leaving the company, so he made him a solid offer.

"First of all he wasn't that expensive. He was a recognizable character; he had name value, he was recognized for all of the time that he spent in WWE, or WWF at the time," Bischoff said. "He was a talented guy. He wasn't getting high seven figures, or mid-six figures."
Virgil made a little over $100,000 a year during his WCW run even though he hardly ever wrestled. Despite fans thinking he was undeserving of that contract, Bischoff said it was justified because Virgil was actually on the lower end of the company's pay scale.
"Look, I know people sitting at home that are working at most normal, non-entertainment jobs hearing those numbers thinking that it was a ton of money, but keep in mind that they are independent contractors, which means that they are taxed at 38 percent at that," Bischoff said. "They have to pay for most of their own expenses on the road, especially a guy like Virgil did, so as much as $138,000 a year sounds like a lot of money--and it is, until you start deducting taxes and road expenses, it really wasn't that much money who spent as much time as Virgil had on WWF television."

ROFLMAO! I Love This- Jake Roberts Tells David Arquette To "Get A Day Job" Following Bloody Indie Match

David Arquette's return to wrestling 18 years after winning the WCW World Title has been picking up the attention of the mainstream media as of late. Arquette wanted to gain the respect of fans and those in the wrestling industry, so he trained and started competing on the indie circuit during the summer.
Joe Rogan of UFC and Fear Factor fame is one of the people just becoming aware of Arquette's exploits in the ring. In fact, he learned about Arquette's latest match while reading Wrestling Inc as detailed on his podcast. Rogan talked more about Arquette wrestling along with guest Jake "the Snake" Roberts on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast.
"What is this? WCW World Heavyweight Champion David Arquette? What? What!?" Rogan said in disbelief while reading an article on Wrestling Inc.
"No! Heavyweight champion? How much does he weigh?"
"140 pounds… He's got diva size now," replied Roberts.
"It just goes to show you what happens though. It's a lust that you get for it – wrestling, man. I hated wrestling growing up. Hated it because my dad did it and he was never home and I blamed wrestling for him never being home."
Rogan and Roberts then watch a clip of Arquette's latest match in which the actor took on Nick Gage in a deathmatch. The match turned into a shoot towards the end and Arquette suffered a deep cut to the neck which required him to have an emergency operation.
"You could tell he's pissed because it didn't go the way he wanted it to," says Roberts when watching Arquette leave the ring.
"You think he's pissed? Do you think they planned that?" responded Rogan.
"Somebody f---ed him somewhere in there and he got f---ed. 'Cause you see him going for the guy," says Roberts as he demonstrates a wrestling hold, "and the guy just took him over and got back on him? He wasn't expecting that. He thought he was going up.
"Then you see him get up and just storm out the f---ing ring. Why didn't you stay and kick his f---ing a**? He just gets up and [says], 'F--- it. I'm going home.'"
"Little does David Arquette know that Jake the Snake Roberts is doing commentary on his match," says Rogan.
"David, get a day job," responded Roberts.

Road Warrior Animal Criticizes WWE's Handling Of The Revival And Authors Of Pain

Last Friday, WWE Hall of Famer Road Warrior Animal did an interview with Chair Shots to the Cranium. He talked about how his face paint happened, the current state of the Raw tag division, and how the Road Warriors changed to the Legion of Doom. Here are some highlights from the interview:
How the spider was incorporated into his face paint scheme:
"In the paint jobs in the beginning, we were just kind of experimenting with what felt good to us. It was kind of an expression of what we felt. At the time, I told Hawk, 'I like the spider web man. How about I do something that reflects like don't get caught in the web of the Road Warriors.' Once the black widow bites you, your kind of paralyzed and it's the same thing when Hawk and I used to close-line somebody or give someone the dooms day, you're kind of paralyzed and you never get up from it."
Transitioning from the Road Warriors to the Legion of Doom when they signed with WWE:
"That was Vince McMahon. He said at the time, 'I have the modern day warrior with Kerry Von Erich and I've got the Ultimate Warrior, and I have you guys that will be another warrior, I don't want to have too many warriors in my stable.' I said, 'Well, how about The Legion of Doom?'"
The current state of WWE's Raw tag team division:
"Well, what you see is they have a habit of doing with tag team wrestling today, they don't establish who the top dog tag team is and they don't ever establish who the heel team is. Everyone can't be equal. That's not life, that's not reality, that's not tag team wrestling. ... They started off with The Revival being strong and now they kill them. The Authors of Pain, yes they just beat one guy, Seth Rollins, to become tag team champions, but, what have they done before that? They've gotten beat! You can't keep beating teams and then have them get a token win every now and then. You have to establish who's the dominant guys. There is no team that stands out as being the dominant team today. That's the problem."

LARRY MATYSIK PASSES AWAY (I posted yesterday his health was bad but damn... )

Herb Simmons announced on his Facebook page that longtime St. Louis announcer/promoter Larry Matysik passed away. He wrote the following:
"It's with a heavy heart this morning that I come to each of you and give you the news that my good friend Larry Matysik has lost the battle. As many know his health has been declining over the past several years. I ask that you keep his wife Pat and Daughter Kelly in your thoughts and prayers as the next few days will be hard for them. I will continue to update you on the arrangements when they are available."
