FRANK MIR MAKING PRO WRESTLING DEBUT AT JOSH BARNETT'S BLOODSPORT
GCW announced Friday that former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir will make his pro wrestling debut at Josh Barnett's Bloodsport, set for April 4th in New Jersey as part of WrestleMania week activities.
No opponent was announced for the 39-year-old Mir who currently still fights for Bellator MMA.
The show will feature Barnett, also a former UFC heavyweight champion, former UFC fighter and Filthy Four Daily co-host Tom Lawlor, Jonathan Gresham, Timothy Thatcher, and the U.S. debut of Hideki Suzuki, a catch wrestler trained by Billy Robinson.
Formerly Matt Riddle's Bloodsport, the show now carries Barnett's name and is promoted as a hybrid wrestling and MMA show with no ring ropes, finishes by knockout or submission, and a look and feel based on the Jean Claude Van Damme movie of the same name.
Last year's show was headlined by Riddle vs. Minoru Suzuki, Nick Gage vs. Thatcher, WALTER vs. Lawlor, Dan Severn, and more.
Chris Jericho On If Vince McMahon Knew He Was Joining AEW, His Signing Being Like Hulk Hogan To WCW
Chris Jericho has reportedly signed a three-year contract with All Elite Wrestling. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that AEW gave him the best contract he's ever signed in his pro wrestling career. Jericho appeared on Busted Open Radio earlier today and talked about always wanting to try something new and different, leading to him signing with the brand new promotion.
"I think when you're talking about all the stuff that has happened the past few years that led to me signing with AEW, it's always that mindset in my head - I do not want to do the same thing that I've done before," Jericho said. "That could go match style, look, hair style, or even company that I'm working for."
WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray, who is a co-host of the show, asked Jericho how big his involvement is for AEW. Jericho compared it to a much cooler version of WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan joining WCW in 1994, two years before Hogan would form the nWo.
"I think it was the piece of the puzzle that they definitely needed at this point in time," Jericho said. "Because what I do for that company is the same thing I did for New Japan last year. I'm not going to say 100% that it's my work that led to New Japan into the Garden [the upcoming ROH/NJPW Madison Square Garden show], but it's a big reason because New Japan has become very hot over the last year with a lot of people that never watched it before, a lot of executives and fans that never watched it before, because they checked it out last year at the Tokyo Dome for Alpha vs. Omega, Jericho vs. Kenny [his match with Kenny Omega]. They might've heard of this New Japan, they might have even known some of the guys that were in it, but they weren't really... and then when Chris Jericho shows up there, they're like, 'Oh my God, Chris Jericho's there. Well, let me check this out.' And then they watch the show and go, 'Oh my gosh, well Jericho's great but look at this Kenny, and they got Okada and Tanahashi, and The Young Bucks, and Cody's there now, and Ibushi's there, etc., etc., etc.'"
Jericho continued, "I think it's the same with AEW and having a legit... you know, let's be honest. I don't know if you said it Dave, I didn't, a legend. If it is a legend, the legendary guy, Chris Jericho's there, that's still super relevant, and people are saying is the hottest free agent in the business. I don't think there's anybody else that could've gone there that had that same kind of affect. If you brought a Hulk Hogan there, for example, then all this is just a re-tread. If you brought Goldbergthere... it's like, well OK we haven't seen him in a while and it's probably a money thing, but with Chris Jericho, everyone was waiting to see where he was going to go. And I think most people say, 'Yeah, he'll talk to other places but he's probably going to end up in WWE.' And when I didn't, it really is a modern day version of Hulk Hogan in 1994, showing up in WCW, but it's a much cooler, more contemporary version of that type of a name, because I've been doing nothing but rebuilding my brand and making people wonder what's Chris Jericho doing to do in 2019. So, when I showed up at the press conference, now everybody knows, and I think people take AEW a whole lot more seriously than they did before I was involved."
Jericho was asked what it felt like to be involved with the AEW rally in Jacksonville, knowing that WWE was nearby preparing for the SmackDown tapings for that night. Despite what other AEW officials have claimed, Jericho said it was not a coincidence that they held the rally in Jacksonville on the same day as WWE SmackDown. Jericho said this was not to start a war with WWE, but it was AEW sending a message to the biggest pro wrestling company in the world.
"I was laughing because that fireworks display at the end of it, it was at the top of the Jacksonville stadium, so it was like the end of a WrestleMania or a beginning of a WrestleMania," Jericho said. "I had no idea it was going to be a huge pyro display that was going on for about two minutes. And I know, I just know that inside that Jacksonville arena, somewhere the old man was in there going, 'Will you shut that pyro off! God damn it! I'm trying to do a meeting here, trying to run a show!' it was very strange, obviously no coincidence it was done the same day SmackDown was in Jacksonville. But it's one of those things, where if you're going to send a message, and if you're going to do things a certain way, do it the right way, and that was making a real statement. Not just to every other company, but to all the fans that are watching. And this is not to start a war, to go to war with WWE, but that doesn't mean you can't co-exist. If you're in the jungle and there's a wild lion, and a wild boar, and a rhino... you don't have to be friends with each other but you can also all exist within the same jungle."
Bully asked if Jericho has had any discussions with Vince McMahon about AEW, or where Jericho thinks Vince's head is at. Bully said he doesn't think Vince is happy that Jericho isn't with WWE, and is with another pro wrestling company in the United States. Jericho said the AEW talks he had with WWE have been amicable. Jericho also revealed that Vince knew about his AEW signing before the rally. Jericho also said the Khan family is really serious about getting into the wrestling business, and they were adamant about having Jericho on the roster.
"A lot of that stuff is private but I did have a very amicable conversation with him and he knew it, he knew what I was doing," Jericho said of Vince. "It was not a surprise. I didn't just show up in Jacksonville and that was it. The bottom line is that the Khan family isn't messing around. They want to make a go of this, and they have a lot of money, and they have a lot of capital, they have a lot of business acumen in sports and entertainment. Not sports entertainment, but the two separate entities. They own the Jacksonville Jaguars and they operate that organization. They own the Fulham football club in London in the Premier League. They know how to run that operation and they understand the pomp and circumstance of what happens when you have a big time sports entity. It's not just a team, it's all of the glitz and glamour surrounding it. They were very adamant that they wanted Chris Jericho on the roster."
Jericho continued, "It took a while for me to really believe that, and believe that it could be something, but once again, over the past year I've done a lot of work with The Young Bucks and Cody Rhodes, with all those guys, both in New Japan and on my cruise, at All In, and you know, once again, no matter how big the offer was, there's also got to be a little bit of belief deep down inside for me... and those guys are all there and motivated, and I love the fact that this day in age, that there are guys, and we're seeing it more and more now, that can make a huge living outside of that system. I did enjoy working over the past year, outside of the WWE system because it's Vince's world and that's great, when you work there you know it, it's just the way it is and you don't argue it, you don't hassle it. But it was a lot of fun to kind of go back and... what do I think is best, and to kind of let the people in charge know that with my 29 years of experience, this is the right way to go. And not have to go through a producer, a cameraman, and a director, and this guy and that guy and this guy, then go sit outside of Vince's office for an hour, waiting to talk to him, to convince them that this is the right way to go. And with all of the matches that I did this year, and there were 4 - 5 in New Japan and 1 on the cruise, were all great matches and they were different, and they all had very smart elements to them. All the build-ups for the matches, you know, that was all me, with some input from the other guys that I was working with, and not having to worry about the corporate side of it. So, I was looking forward to it and when the offer came down from the Khans, and WWE was very amicable in saying congratulations, and go kick ass. So, that's basically what happened. Now once it happened, I don't know what the reaction would be, but the last conversation I had was an amicable one, for sure."
Pete Dunne On What Triple H Promised When He Signed With WWE, Brock Lesnar Being His Dream Match
WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne was recently a guest on E&C's Pod Of Awesomeness. Among many other things, Dunne talked about building the NXT UK brand, whether he was always aware of WWE's plans for NXT UK, dream opponents, and opportunities arising from WWE brands crossing over with each other.
According to Dunne, building the NXT UK brand has given him and other NXT UK talent different priorities than other WWE performers exclusively focused on make it to the main roster as quickly as possible.
"It's this unique opportunity that we never thought existed," Dunne admitted. "And then, being able to do that, and then being responsible for our own careers and taking the next step with that, but then feeling… pressure's the wrong word because we've enjoyed the experience, but feeling that responsibility to [say], 'okay, let's make a brand for everyone in the UK, for not only the wrestlers that have been doing this for so long,' and ever since it went off TV, five years or however long it has been, there has been a bit of a gap. 'When will British wrestling come back to TV?' To get the opportunity to bring it back and to give us that little bit more of responsibility and a good focus as well. Instead of us thinking we need to get to the main roster as quick as we can, we have a completely different focus, which was 'let's build this from the ground floor and do something completely original.'"
Dunne shared that NXT UK talent were promised from the beginning by William Regal and Triple H that some kind of WWE UK TV show would happen at some point.
"We were promised from Day One that something would happen," Dunne remembered. "They just said they didn't know when and they just said they didn't know what it was going to be exactly. And it was still a long time after that [Tyler Bate TakeOver] match happened, but I definitely feel like that match helped to cement [NXT UK] a little, especially for a worldwide audience. It made them feel like [NXT UK] is something they would want to see and it legitimized the title a little bit more. But we were told from Day One by Regal and Triple H from even when we were doing the press conference and stuff that there would be a full time show."
On the subject of dream matchups, Dunne said he would like to face current WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar, AJ Styles, Rey Mysterio, and Matt Riddle.
"The one that I always say would be sort of a dream match for me would be Brock Lesnar," Dunne divulged. "I think that would be a sort of interesting mix of styles, especially because a lot of guys my size don't wrestle the style that I do, so I think that would be really interesting for people to watch. AJ Styles is a massive one for me. He's someone I always wanted to wrestle. Rey Mysterio, he's up there too. But then, aside from that, even in the NXT brand, there are so many people I haven't had a chance to work with. I got to do one or two matches with Matt Riddle on the independents, but I'd love to work with Matt Riddle in NXT. I think we'd be able to do some really interesting stuff that people haven't seen before."
In Dunne's view, the crossover between WWE brands can lead to interesting possibilities.
"It's getting to the point now where different [WWE] brands can mix with other ones and there are so many different options all under the same banner, which has never happened before and I didn't really think it was possible. It has all happened so fast." Dunne explained, "before you could only really make a name for yourself on the independents or Japan, but Mustafa Ali is someone who has been chipping away since the cruiserweight tournament. He almost had this run on the main roster that someone like AJ Styles or Samoa Joe, someone like that, would have on the independents, but he has been able to do that within this company, which is a really cool idea and it'll be really interesting to see it even more in the next few years."

Jake "The Snake" Roberts Reveals Which WWE Angle He Wishes He'd Never Done
WWE Hall of Famer Jake "The Snake" Roberts was a recent guest on the Grind City Wrestlingpodcast to discuss his "Dirty Details" comedy tour. Roberts discussed his ring psychology, helping the career of DDP, and more. Roberts stated that one of the most important parts of wrestling is paying attention to your audience to see what is working and what is not. He also stressed how important is it to have a story behind a match.
"A match is a wonderful thing if you take care of it and have fun with it, and tell it like a story instead of going out and emptying your gun in all different places and not aiming at anything," said Roberts. "What are you doing, man? You're just scatter-shooting. You're just taking a handful of crap and throwing it up against the wall and seeing what sticks. That doesn't work for me. I wanna go out there and take those people for a ride. And, the biggest, the hardest thing about doing that is learning to read your audience.
"You gotta go out and read the audience, because they may not be ready to do what you want to do, so you may have to adjust. You may have to change it and go a different direction. But if you don't go out and read the audience and see what they're asking for, then you're just gonna be taken off on a road that nobody's even watching. So, reading the audience is probably the most important thing."
In 1996, Roberts was involved in a feud with Jerry "The King" Lawler that incorporated his real-life problems with alcohol abuse. In one segment, Lawler even poured liquid down his throat to further mock Roberts' alcohol problems. In an August 2017 episode of Dinner with the King, Lawler stated that Roberts allowed WWE to "talk about his personal demons," but he "didn't pour real alcohol down Jake's throat." Still Roberts felt that, in retrospect, this was one of the worst moments of his career.
"It was ridiculous," said Roberts. "That was one of the things I'd wish I had never done. The whole idea behind that was really cheap, I thought. I thought it was disgusting, actually. After everything that I've been through, then you're gonna go out there and bring it up in the front, and that's gonna be your idea? That's the best the writers can come up with? Come on, give me a break. It was ridiculous, man. Not many times in my career I said no, but that's one time I should have said no."
Roberts was also very disapproving of WWE bringing up Jeff Hardy's alcohol problems during his feud with Samoa Joe, as well as using a recently-deceased Jim Neidhart during Natalya's feud with Ruby Riott. "How ridiculous is that," said Roberts.
WWE's Unique Deals Had In Mind For The Young Bucks, Kenny Omega's Status, Hangman Page In NXT
Cody Rhodes, The Young Bucks and Hangman Page turned down WWE offers in order to be a part of the new All Elite Wrestling promotion, headed by Jacksonville Jaguars co-owner Tony Khan.
Triple H reportedly had worked hard and offered unique deals in hopes of signing all four, according to Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter. According to Meltzer, Page's deal was to work NXT for main roster money. Page was to have been pushed as one the top stars on the brand.
WWE also had a unique three-year deal for the Bucks, which would have been for the same amount of money as A.J. Styles. The WWE deal included having their Being The Elite show airing weekly on the WWE Network. It also had a unique six-month window that would have allowed them out of their contracts if they weren't happy.
It was noted that The Elite had roughly 12 hours of discussions with Triple H, and they praised him for how things were handled. Apparently Triple H also saw the humor in the Being the Eliteepisode where the Bucks superkicked Kazarian, who was dressed like Triple H, repeatedly as their way of publicly turning down the WWE offer.
As noted, Kenny Omega's contract with New Japan Pro Wrestling expires at the end of the this month and he is expected to sign with AEW after February 1st, when he is a free agent. It was reported in The Observer that the word is that Omega has already turned down WWE's offer.
