Shane Douglas - Am I being critical of modern-day wrestling?
Sadly, just like when William Regal put out a statement on current wrestlers doing stupid, risky moves and the current wrestlers (and 'marks' too for that matter) either wouldn't listen or complained, the same thing will happen here. Current wrestlers mostly say they 'gotta get their shit in', even if it doesn't 'tell a story within the match'. When I worked behind the scenes for three different indie promotions in New England back in the 90's I saw that kind of mentality start. Guys wanted to be Jeff hardy and RVD and they 'needed to get their shit in'.
I learned under the learning tree of the late Sylvano Sousa and the late Walter 'Killer" Kowalski, I also picked the brains of guys who KNOW what works and doesn't work. Guys like Dory Funk jr., Bruce and Tom Prichard, Jim Cornette, and everything i thought growing up watching wrestling, i was right about. "Telling the story within a match", ring psychology, all of that matters but not, with this current era of wrestlers. "Getting their shit in' for the immediate pop is what matters now, or so it seems.
I've talked endlessly over the years about what Shane talks about here, and again, it'll fall on deaf ears because today's 'wrestlers'? Think they know it all, and 'don't need advice' from the guys who aved the way for them.
