In 2008, two of the biggest wrestling superstars in the world made appearances inside a high school gym for a small event featuring the wrestling debut of Ric Flair's son, Reid Flair. Reid teamed with his brother, David to go up against Knobbs and Sags, The Nasty Boys. Ric Flair would accompany his sons to the ring while Jimmy Hart is managing The Nasty Boys
International Wrestling Cartel is a promotion based out of Western Pennsylvania, created in 2001 off the heels of a hot promotion in the mid-1990s called Steel City Wrestling. Steel City was founded by Norm Connors and was one of the top promotions on the East Coast before closing in 2000. A year later, Norm would start the International Wrestling Cartel and used a lot of the same SCW stars as well the new generation of young and up and coming indy stars. IWC became a major player on the East Coast by running the Super Indy tournament, won by AJ Styles, Colt Cabana, and Chris Sabin.
In 2007, at their annual Christmastime event, A Call to Arms, a first time ever dream match between Samoa Joe and 2 Cold Scorpio took place. IWC hosted many dream matches over the years and they always delivered. As many great matches that both wrestlers have had, this is not one of them, unfortunately. I knew this match existed, however I never watched it and felt the need to post it. Sometimes dream matches sound great on paper but the execution just doesn't work out and this is an example of that.
Samoa Joe is still wrestling, appearing with AEW where he is currently the ROH Television Champion. 2 Cold Scorpio is continuing to wrestle for various independents including GCW and Black Label Pro.
USA Xtreme Wrestling is another incarnation of USA Pro Wrestling, run by Frank Goodman. Around 2005, Frank changed the name assumingly to draw in more hardcore fans to his shows despite almost filling each building he ran. The name fit the independent scene in that era and it stood out more than simply USA Pro Wrestling although most fans still referred to it as USA Pro.
Sabu is fresh off his WWECW run, having been released in May 2007. Dustin Rhodes was released from WWE in 2006 and moved around the independent scene around the country for a year or so before joining TNA in July 2007. This is the only singles match to ever occur between Sabu and Dustin Rhodes.
The Jersey J-Cup was one of the most prestigious tournaments in wrestling, being held from 2000 to 2004. The talent that came through to wrestle in the tournament in 4 short years is unparalleled.
In this second round tournament match, the newly signed WWE Superstar, CM Punk takes on current AEW star, Jay Lethal. Both wrestlers were working their way up through the ranks on the indy scene at this point. For most of 2003, CM Punk was in a vicious and violent feud with Raven in ROH, TNA, and MLW! Jay Lethal was working for his home promotion of JAPW and ROH as Hydro, part of the Special K stable! This would be their first singles match against one another.
