Corporal Kirchner Passes Away

Former WWE star Corporal Kirchner (real name Michael James Penze) passed away at the age of 64 on Wednesday. The cause of death is a heart attack, his wife tried to save him but was unable to.

A former United States Army paratrooper, Kirchner got his start in the pro wrestling business in Verne Gagne’s AWA. He would eventually join WWE and wrestle under the name “RT Reynolds” before being repackaged with the military gimmick based on his real-life past. The Kirchner character was reportedly created by WWE to replace Sgt. Slaughter, who left the company to join the AWA in 1985.

After spending several years in WWE, Kirchner had a brief run in the Harts’ Stampede Wrestling where he wrestled under the name “Col. Kirchner.” Thereafter, Kirchner had short stints in Japan with NJPW.

During his years in Japan’s W*ING promotion, Kirchner created the character “Leatherface” which was inspired by the villian of the same name from the movie The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. However, Kirchner was arrested and jailed for six months following an attempted assault by a fan, which left the fan with severe facial injuries. With Kirchner in jail, the Leatherface character was given to another wrestler, Rick Patterson.

In 2001, Kirchner was announced as a participant in the Gimmick Battle Royal at WrestleMania X-Seven. The WWE went as far as to include Kirchner’s photo in a graphic to promote the match. However, he was removed from the match a week before the big event at the Houston Astrodome.

WWE erroneously announced Kirchner’s passing because of confusion over his real name, which was believed to be Thomas Spear at the time. This was later corrected by WWE. In 2011, WWE.com published a two-part feature on Corporal Kirchner as part of its “Where Are They Know?” series. Kirchner was reportedly announced dead on October 15, 2006 by a former employer World Wrestling Entertainment (formerly known as the World Wrestling Federation). On October 21, it was announced that he was still alive.[1] This came as a result of confusion over Kirchner's actual name, which was believed to be Thomas Spear at the time. There, in fact, was a Thomas Spear who died in White Marsh, Maryland, but he is completely unconnected to Kirchner.[1]

Kirchner's mother heard about the WWE's announcement of her son's death and immediately called her son to inform him. Kirchner and his mom then contacted the WWE to tell that Kirchner was still alive and in good health, leading to the WWE's announcement on October 21. Kirchner, who was working as a truck driver at the time, later remarked that he was honored and surprised that people still remembered him 20 years after his brief rise to fame in WWF/E.

Jonah On His Impact Wrestling Contract, New Japan, etc.

Jonah was a recent guest on Busted Open Radio, where he spoke about his contracts with New Japan Pro Wrestling and Impact Wrestling. He admitted his deal with the latter is only short-term as the former WWE star teased his future.

“I think 2022 I am very excited for myself and professional wrestling. But I think it’s exciting for everyone that’s a fan of professional wrestling as well. You’re going to be able to see people wrestle different places and wrestle different opponents that you never thought you were going to be able to see. Almost some dream matches will happen next year, I think.

“There’s that Forbidden Door that people keep walking through,” Jonah said. “For someone like myself, I have an agreement with New Japan and I have a short-term agreement with Impact. You never know where I could be in 2022.”

Jonah has now been part of three major locker rooms within 2021. The former North American Champion opened up about the differences between them all. He revealed that the culture has changed backstage in wrestling as of late.

“I feel like everywhere has their own vibe. Obviously, everyone has people that are more comfortable in their locker rooms because they’ve been there for a longer time and it’s about fitting into those places. I’ve always been one that’s easy to fit into any locker room. I’m a pretty respectful guy, but I’m easy to get along with as well. I like to go there, do my business, and then leave, but also have a fun time as well.

“I think Japan is very business-centric people, pretty quiet backstage. But then, they do love a good rib the Japanese wrestlers themselves. Sometimes those things are fun. Whereas now the backstage of NXT or in Impact, you get such a varied age gap between someone that’s like 18, 19, or 20, and then people that are over their 50s. So, it is a very different culture backstage now in wrestling.”

Jonah also spoke about debuting with New Japan Pro Wrestling. He admitted he’s wanted to work with the company for a while. The former WWE Superstar also commented on what the fans are like.

“It felt amazing,” Jonah said on his New Japan debut. “It’s a company that I’ve wanted to work with for a long time. I did work with Pro Wrestling Noah for about a year, I lived in Japan for about a year. So, I know what the Japanese crowd is like and what the fanbase is like.

“I think the big difference is, obviously wrestling fans in the Western world they love pro wrestling, they love everything about it. But it’s almost like the Japanese fans watch it as a sport, so they’re a little bit more engaged during the match. Promos and things like that, maybe not so much,” he admitted. “But during the match, you can see that they’re with your every move.”

Kevin Owens On His Thoughts When it Comes To NXT 2.0

"Today’s NXT is very different than the NXT I was part of, to the point I believe it should have a totally different name. And I don’t think it’s better or worse, but it’s just too different. So when I’m watching NXT, I don’t see the NXT I was part of. It’s not the same thing. It’s a little bit like Ring of Honor. The ROH of old days and the ROH now, it’s just not the same thing. So to me, it’s completely two different products, so when I’m watching it, I put myself in the mindset we had when I was at NXT and the mindset there seems to have right now, it’s completely different. It’s very hard for me to compare them. I don’t even consider that to be the same show. I don’t really feel any attachment to NXT now. Listen, there are very talented people working there, and I have watched the last TakeOver show they did and there were parts of it that I thought was really good, but it’s like a few years ago, if they had asked me to go back to NXT, I would have said yes. But f they would ask me that now, I don’t think I would be as receptive to go back, because it’s not the same thing. I don’t think I fit in the new NXT as I was fitting in the NXT I was part of, with guys like Sami, Finn, Samoa Joe and Nakamura. When I watch NXT now, I don’t feel the same thing I felt when I was watching NXT two years ago."

Moose Interview: Why He Passed On Chance To Go To WWE And Why Wrestlers Pick Impact Over WWE & AEW

Impact World Champion Moose in a recent interview said he had a chance to sign with WWE, but he chose to re-sign with Impact Wrestling because he’s not done with accomplishments there.

Moose signed a new two-year contract with Impact earlier this year. He just spoke with Alistair McGeorge of Metro UK and confirmed that he did have interest from WWE. Moose revealed why he decided to stay with Impact.

“It was definitely a hard decision,” Moose said. “As much as I love Impact and I love everything Impact was doing, I also wanted to see what else was out there. I had a chance to go to WWE but ultimately I decided that my time in Impact wasn’t done.

“There was things I needed to accomplish that I haven’t accomplished yet. It wouldn’t have been fair on myself, or it wouldn’t be fair on the company, if I left so soon without accomplishing those other things. Ultimately, that was my reason for staying.”

Moose also said creative freedom is one reason why he re-signed with Impact. He noted that the structure in Impact allows wrestlers to pitch and develop their own ideas. Moose believes a lot of wrestlers choose Impact over AEW or WWE because of that freedom.

“I think that’s one of the reasons why a lot of guys choose to come to Impact over AEW or going to WWE – the freedom that you have to create,” Moose said. “I’ve heard that in other companies, that’s not the case at all. You don’t really have freedom at all, it’s up to the writers to decide.”

“If you pitch an idea and generally, if that idea’s good, [Impact Executive Vice President] Scott D’Amore’s obviously not gonna turn it down as long as it’s not gonna get you or the company cancelled.”

Moose is scheduled to defend his title against W. Morrissey and Matt Cardona in a Triple Threat at the Impact Hard To Kill pay-per-view on Saturday, January 8 in Dallas, TX.
