Cody Rhodes On How The Stardust Character Affected His WWE Departure
conclusion of his tenure having a run as Stardust. The Stardust character was formed following Cody and Goldust experiencing a losing streak after a successful tag team run, and Cody admonishing his brother to find another tag team partner. Goldust would team with a list of people, but would eventually team with his brother again under the Stardust character.
The two turned heel against the Usos, and won the WWE Tag Team Championships again. After dissension between the two, Stardust turned on his brother and commenced a singles career. While Stardust had moments such as teaming with The Ascension as the Cosmic Wasteland, competing in the ladder match at WrestleMania 31 for the Intercontinental Championship, competing against John Cena for the United States Championship, and feuding with Stephen Amell, he never peaked past a midcard level.
Regarding never reaching a main event status, Cody defended WWE by admitting that an opportunity was presented.
"In WWE, you're always given the opportunity," said Cody. "They have such a large brand — you're on the (WWE) Network, you're on YouTube, you're on USA Network, you're on so many platforms. I just think it didn't feel right. I don't know what specifically."
Rhodes expressed to FOX Sports how the Stardust character affected his departure from WWE.
"Maybe I just wasn't meant to do Stardust as long as I had done it, so it didn't feel right. I remember putting some concept art together for what I would look like as just Cody Rhodes, as just Cody, the wrestler," said Cody. "And it really just appealed to me in such a way that if I couldn't do it in WWE, I thought well, I've saved my money, I know a little bit about the game, I'm going to go and do it on my own and see how I do. And it ended up being the best decision I've ever made.
Now, Cody has spent his time competing in the independent circuit, as well as Ring of Honor, New Japan, and briefly Impact Wrestling. He won the Ring of Honor World Championship and held it for six months before losing it to Dalton Castle last December. He explained that he is experiencing a significant level of freedom being able to compete in different promotions.
"It's total freedom. And I don't think it's fear. I don't think that New Japan and Ring of Honor are afraid of the Bullet Club, they're aware," said Rhodes. "Particularly Being the Elite — they're aware that it's only a good thing, because it's a platform for talent to succeed."
Cody revealed to FOX Sports that the popular "Being the Elite" YouTube series is currently in discussions with a number of companies interested in purchasing the show's streaming rights. He also explained why the rift in Bullet Club occurred between him and Kenny Omega.
"I'm not capable of being in a group where I'm not the leader. I did it once earlier in my career with Legacy, and that was cool because I was young and green and a rookie in the industry, but now no more," expressed Cody. "After a world title run you can't really call someone else your leader. And I think that is this natural tension, that very really exists, because here [Omega] is with this reputation of being the best wrestler in the world and here I am with that mainstream appeal that helped gain a bunch of new fans for the Bullet Club. And the fact that I think Matt likes me more, and Nick likes Kenny, it's all real. So why not have a match? Why not make it real?"
Cody will be facing Kenny Omega at Ring of Honor's Supercard of Honor pay-per-view on April 7th in New Orleans.

Waltman on Shelton Benjamin finding a loaded gun in his rental car:
"Here's the thing, in all the years of traveling around and trying to rent cars like we do. There have been a few times when you find things leftover from the last person that rented the car, but come on man, a loaded gun?! Who freaking forgets something like that... Let's just use our imaginations and think of all the bad scenarios that could come from something like that."
Not wanting to be pigeon-holed in the lightweight division:
"I was the very last WWF Light Heavyweight champion. I fought a long time to not have to have that belt. One time, I got my payoff and I gave him [Jim Ross] a call. It was a SummerSlam payoff and I asked him if they were paying me by the pound? So that's how I felt about the pay scale there. That you were paid by the pound sometimes, and it's not really, but you can get that being in the WWE at times. I didn't want that. There was no way I wanted that. That was a pay cut for me. So that was the issue."

New Japan opening US Dojo?
NJPW announced the opening of their U.S. based Dojo in Los Angeles, California with two five-day camp sessions to those with and without wrestling experience. The first is from March 19-23 and the second is March 26-30 for $500 a session. In the FAQ, NJPW notes that "NJPW decision makers will be present. NJPW is always on the lookout for new talents to join their ranks." No word yet on if they will be running a full-time US Dojo or if they will just hold mini-camps like the ones in March
AUSTIN ARIES' IMPACT STATUS, SONJAY ANNOUNCING, TWITCH 'BRACE FOR IMPACT' SPECIAL, WHAT HAPPENED WITH REY AND MORE IMPACT WRESTLING NEWS
During his media call yesterday promoting Impact Wresting, Impact champion
Austin Aries noted he is not currently under contract to the company. His
discussions to return began as soon as he was a "free agent" but they initially
began as talks of Aries working behind the scenes to get involved to help "right
the ship." When the new team became in charge, those talks turned to him
returning as an in-ring talent. Aries said he didn't feel pressure being the
nucleus of the company as they try to rebuild. He said that one of the aspects
of the return that interested him was the ability to continue to work
independently and go off to different companies and "collect belts." He came
off very well as a rep for the company, as did Braxton Sutter and Allie last
week.
In regard to Rey Mysterio, the word that has made the way among the talents in the company is that the company had negotiated a deal with Mysterio for him to debut, but once Konnan (who reps Rey) got involved to seal the deal, something went wrong leading to the agreement never getting finalized and signed. Thus, Rey's debut was canceled. That explains why we heard travel was set at one point. There was hope of trying to get him to debut in April at the TV taping, but with Mysterio making it clear that he and WWE are in a courtship phase of trying to work something out, he obviously won't be coming into Impact unless something falls through with WWE. The big sticking point with WWE and Rey is that they want him back full-time, but he, at 43 and with an infinite number of knee surgeries under his belt, wants to work part-time.
Sonjay Dutt replaced Jeremy Borash as the lead announcer on last night's edition of Impact Wrestling. He was very good and since he is the one writing the TV shows right now, it's a smart move to have him in the booth as he above all will know exactly what he's trying to highlight and get over, similar to how Bill Watts knew exactly what to say when he did color commentary alongside Jim Ross in Mid-South Wrestling. With Dutt having a long rehab before he can return the ring, I think the best think Impact can do is keep him in the booth until then, then run an angle setting up his return. That gives them someone obviously very good in the lead announcing role until they decide on someone else, as opposed to scrambling to replace Borash.
Josh Mathew was also on commentary last night. The plan had been to replace Mathews with Don Callis, so we will see if that continues.
With no venue announced and no tickets on sale for Toronto, it's becoming more and more likely the April Redemption PPV and post-PPV tapings will be back at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. A number of talents are actually hoping that's the case as they'd rather spend a week in Florida obviously, especially if they are going to bring their families.
Tonight's Impact Wrestling's Twitch channel will debut "Brace for Impact" the 2/3 WrestlePro event from Rahway, NJ that drew in excess of 1,000 to the Rahway Rec Center at 8 PM Eastern. Pat Buck and his promotion are excellent in local promotion and have some great young talents. Buck is actually one of the most underrated bookers out there. The lineup for the show, when it took place, featured:
*Tenille Dashwood (fka Emma) vs. Angelina Love
*Fallah Bahh vs. Alberto El Patron
*Bobby Wayward vs. Eddie Edwards
*Chris Payne vs. Matt Sydal
*Johnny Impact vs. Danny Maff
*Braxton & Allie vs. Nikos Rikos and Nikki Adams
Next week's Impact Wrestling will feature Impact Wrestling champion Austin Aries vs. Eli Drake, Hijo del Fantasma challenging X-Division champion Taiji Ishimori, Rosemary vs. Hania the Huntress and the debut of Brian Cage.
Rosemary, while keeping in character, acknowledged this week on Twitter that she had suffered an injury while wrestling Jessicka Havok over the weekend for AAW in Illinois.
Hania the Huntress, who debuted yesterday, is already done with the company, as previously noted, so don't get used to her on TV.
There's been zero contact between Impact and Jeff Jarrett to the best of my knowledge.
Impact's social media channels are now being run by Garrett Kidney, a long-time Impact Wrestling fan. It was a smart move to hire him as one can feel the legitimate excitement from the person handling the social media in the postings.

Impact Wrestling fucking up (again, but really when aren't they?)
Dave Meltzer noted in The Wrestling Observer Newsletter that some Impact Wrestling talent are upset about the company paying them six weeks after an appearance, which includes indie dates booked by the company. Because Impact is booking them for their independent dates, they are forced to drop their bookings where they're paid the night of the appearance and are instead paid six weeks later.
(SIX WEEKS!? They can't do better than that? Anyone with the I.Q. higher than a door knob I'm sure can get it done in a more simpler way. More proof that Anthem Sports maybe shouldn't have gotten into the wrestling business in the first place).

MAJOR CHANGES BEHIND THE SCENES OF 205 LIVE
you may have noticed that the series feels far closer in essence to the
Cruiserweight Classic tournament that spawned it than what has been the overall
presentation of 205 Live itself over the last year.
There is a very good reason for that, PWInsider.com and others have confirmed. As of last week's episode kicking off the tournament for the vacant WWE Cruiserweight championship, Vince McMahon has stepped aside and is no longer personally putting 205 Live together.
Various wrestling news sources have confirmed that the series is now being overseen by Triple H, who has brought back many of the hallmarks of the Cruiserweight Classic including the style and presentation of the Cruisers inside the ring. While Vince McMahon had been personally working with the 205 Live stars to bring out their personalities to present them in a certain light, there has been more a focus on the in-ring work and competition under Triple H's vision.
In recent months, there had been talk behind the scenes about why the brand wasn't firing on all cylinders. People were told that McMahon believed that a character-driven show was the best way to get the 205 Live brand over, as seen by his decision to have Enzo Amore shifted there and become the nucleus of the brand, since he was such a strong character.
While Enzo led to an uptick in viewership and interest (before being fired by the company), others in the company still argued that presenting 205 Live similar to how the Cruiserweight Classic was presented was the right way to go. The belief among those who pushed for a return to the CWC presentation was that having smaller talents echoing Raw and Smackdown personalities wasn't going to showcase what made the Cruisers different and unique and it wasn't going to help 205 Live grow beyond being an hour of WWE TV on the Network.
It should be noted that aspects of the CWC were dropped almost immediately from 205 Live after the series debuted, including personality packages that had been produced to introduce viewers to the performers that were almost immediately discarded.
McMahon finally made the decision to allow Triple H to take over as show runner two weeks ago in an attempt to reboot and fix the brand. While there's always a chance McMahon could place himself back in control (it is, after all, his company), the last two weeks of 205 Live have been compared by those behind the scenes to WWE NXT, in that Triple H has been the alpha and omega when it came to being the decision-maker for the product.
The lead writer for 205 Live is currently Jonathan Baeckstrom, who has been part of the company's creative team since August 2013. He's been working for the company as a lead writer since November 2016, coming into the company after working in talent management. Adam Pearce, the former NWA champion who transitioned into a WWE Performance Center Coach before being moved up to a Producer for the main roster, remains the lead Producer for the 205 Live brand.
Sources were also told that the vision seen the last several weeks is very much in line with the original plans for 205 Live series before Vince McMahon decided to get personally involved with the direction of the product and the nurturing of the 205 Live talents, who may end up being the last generation of talents McMahon worked with on a specific one-on-one basis to groom.
Various sources were also told that 205 Live house shows are not off the table after the two test shows in Lowell, MA and Poughkeepsie, NY last month, but there are no current plans for additional live events at this time. Instead, the focus is going to be building the brand up by presenting strong athletic characters and in-ring competition before taking the brand back on the road for another experimental house show run.
So, if you enjoyed the likes of Hideo Itami vs. Roderick Strong last night, expect more of that in-ring style going forward as Strong was specifically brought up as a way to help freshen up the 205 Live roster and product - and there may be other additions in the weeks to come.

The WWE Intercontinental champion The Miz has signed a new deal with World Wrestling
Entertainment, according to multiple sources.
The belief among those we've spoken with is that while the company was seeking to lock Miz up for a longer deal, the two sides finally agreed upon a four-year deal that would keep him tied to the company through 2022.
Miz, 37, parlayed his professed love of professional wrestling on MTV's The Real World and turned it into a career that sees him, today, as one of the most successful, longest-tenured members of the WWE locker room.
Miz was signed to a developmental contract after appearing on the $1 Million edition of Tough Enough and has built a career that has seen him become the second heel to successfully win a Wrestlemania main event (the first being Triple H) and starring in a series of WWE Studios movies, including taking over The Marine franchise, the latest of which will be released later this year. Beyond that, he has continously improved his work inside the ring as well as his promo skills and has tirelessly worked to promote WWE.
Late last year, WWE announced plans for a new reality series starring Miz and his wife Maryse for the USA Network, titled Miz and Mrs. that will debut later this year with a six episode first season.

Ric Flair Talks Hating WCW, Problems With Eric Bischoff, Charlotte Being Bigger Than Ronda Rousey
WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair was recently interviewed by The Mirror. Below are a few highlights:
During the early years of Raw you were one of the opposition, because you rejoined World Championship Wrestling (WCW) a month later and then went head-to-head with Raw on Monday Nitro. Did you used to watch both shows? Was the rivalry as fierce as people say now?
"Worse. I hated WCW. I've said it on record. Not the guys, but the way it was run. It was ridiculous. Literally, my prediction, I said they will kill themselves. And they did. You can't go out on Nitro and say openly to Vince, 'we're putting you out of business'. He's forgiven a lot of people."
Do you think that approach turned fans off?
"Yeah. They wanted me to go out there and say that. I said 's*** no' I'm not going to go out and say that. 'I'm not doing it'. It's one of the reasons me and [Eric] Bischoff didn't get along. They wanted me to go out and put WWE down like Hulk [Hogan], Scott Hall and [Kevin] Nash and those guys were. Not a chance."
[Vince McMahon] even hired Eric Bischoff as the general manager of Raw in July 2002 after WCW went out of business.
"I was really shocked. I wouldn't badmouth WWE on air out of loyalty to Vince. I used to work for his dad [Vincent J. McMahon]. He's forgiven a lot of people man, Bruno [Sammartino], the Ultimate Warrior, Kevin, Scott..."
How excited would you be to see Asuka face your daughter Charlotte, or as has been rumoured, Ronda Rousey to face Charlotte at WrestleMania. That would be a box office attraction.
"Oh huge. Ronda because Ronda gets so much exposure from ESPN as well, which we do a lot of stuff with. That's why Brock [Lesnar] brings so much to the table, because Brock used to get so much ESPN stuff, which gives us an audience that might not normally watch it."
If Ronda Rousey was to come into WWE, she couldn't be in better hands than in a match with Charlotte.
"No. Charlotte will beat her when she wants to! Ronda better watch out. I can tell you this, Charlotte is not afraid of her in any way, shape of form. She is a lot bigger than she is. [5ft 10in to 5ft 7in and 144lb to 135lb]. She can deadlift 300lb and squad 250lb."

Ted DiBiase On 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin Exceeding Expectations In WWE
Ted Dibiase spoke to the Mirror on Steve Austin exceeding expectations and working with Austin early on in WWE. Here are some of the highlights:
Working with Steve Austin early on:
"I did make 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin the Million Dollar Champion on Raw. You know I saw the talent in Steve and I remember telling him - because a lot of people were telling him 'You need to do more' - I remember telling him, 'Don't do anything different, because what you do is believable, it's real.' And I said 'That's what I've always tried to sell is real.' I said 'It will take you a little longer, but once you're over, you're over.' Well nobody knew just how over he would get! It was unbelievable."
Being someone who helped cultivate Austin in WWE:
"Yeah, well, I was just that rub. It's kind of like in the movies, they see a potential great young actor and they put him in a movie as a co-star to an A-list guy and that helps elevate them. That's what they did with Steve and I happened to be an A-list guy at the time. So I was just the right guy at the right place, at the right time."
Austin exceeding expectations as the "Stone Cold" gimmick continued to grow in popularity:
"I think he exceeded everybody's expectations, I really do. What's funny is you know everybody is talking about how we're now a PG program. I think that's great, because I'm a minister now and I have been for a long time, so I was not a big fan of the Attitude Era. There were some things they did that were very funny and that was great, but I was never a fan of the sleazy stuff. What's funny is, I was part of a panel, Steve and I, and they said 'Ted, you have been quoted as saying that you would never allow your son's hero to be a beer guzzling, swearing, finger-flipping wrestler'. I said 'exactly, I still believe that today'. Steve was sitting by me and he looked at me and said 'That's the same thing my mother said!'"

REY MYSTERIO DISCUSSES RETURN AT ROYAL RUMBLE, WHETHER A LARGER WWE RETURN IS IN HIS FUTURE & MORE
Rey Mysterio was interviewed interview with an interview with The Mirror in the UK promoting 5 Star Wrestling, discussing
being the new figurehead of the British promotion and the mixture of new and old
faces. During the interview, the conversation naturally turned to his return at
the Royal Rumble in Philadelphia.

Going through the curtain at the Royal Rumble: "It's indescribable... It was one of those moments that you had to be there, to really live it. You know, I don't think I've ever felt that type of reaction, in a massive fanbase, like it was in Philly. Man, it was just - unforgettable. It was just one of those feelings that you're going to cherish and it will be with me for the rest of my life.
The previous reception he received in Philadelphia when fans wanted Daniel Bryan to be number 30: "Of course, you're right, you have nothing to say, except that has to do with timing. When they are expecting to see a face that they want to see and you give them the wrong one, then they are going to boo. Not at you, but at the way that show was written. So this time I was very fortunate to be number 27, to come out after three years and to have that emotional feeling of being loved and being wanted to be seen again. To be able to be seen again in front of the WWE Universe, was just incredible."
The generational showdown in the Rumble match: "Incredible yes, three of the OGs and three of the new era, the new generation. I think it was a good standoff. When you have situations like that, I don't think the WWE fans or WWE Universe have seen a moment like that arise. Who knows? Maybe that will lead into something else in the future."
A relationship going forward with WWE: "I want to say that there is a big possibility that I will be back. [We're] figuring out what the situation is, you know from both ends. But there is definitely a positive feedback on behalf of the fans, on behalf of the WWE staff and behalf of myself man. I think we're possibly going to sit down and negotiate something where we can both work together and have a good time and enjoy."

Last week, Idolmania Sports Management announced the Aldis Crusade with Ten Pounds of Gold where the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Nick Aldis would defend the title over twenty times in just over sixty days. During filming for an upcoming Ten Pounds of Gold, Billy Corgan took the opportunity to talk about the Aldis Crusade and follow through with a promise he made back in November. With the Philadelphia Eagles winning the Super Bowl last night in Minneapolis, the NWA is announcing a historic NWA Worlds Heavyweight Title match for the city of Brotherly Love with one of the cities most iconic wrestling heroes on March 24th, 2018.

A memorial show for Christopher Chavez, the owner and promoter of Colorado Springs Wrestling, who unfortunately passed away due to a tragic accident.

Rosemary Injured.
Rosemary from Impact was injured last night in a match with Jessicka Havok on an AAW show in LaSalle, IL. They were about 3:00 into the match when she was injured, and went right to the finish. Rosemary kicked Havok, and got hurt and rolled out of the ring. They could tell she was hurt, she immediately took a tombstone piledriver and the match ended. Havok broke character and helped her to the back. She couldn't put any weight on her right leg.
Booker T Blames Corey Graves For Losing WWE RAW Commentary Job And Challenges Him To A Fight
Last week, a change was made to the Raw announce team with Jonathan Coachman coming in and WWE Hall of Famer Booker T being moved out. WWE said Booker T would remain with the company to work Kickoff panels, but WWE also noted that he will make occasional Raw appearances and would serve as a WWE Ambassador. On his podcast, Heated Conversations, Booker T spoke about why he was moved off the team and it was due to Corey Graves.
"If I got Corey Graves into a fisticuffs, I would beat him down like he stole something," Booker T said. "I would be whoopin' his ass all day long. My thing is this, I'm a nice guy, until you get on my bad side. Corey Graves, I wouldn't necessarily say he's on my bad side right now, but he's the reason that I'm not on Monday Night Raw right now. Lot of people in the company thought I was going to jump on him. I was gonna do something bad to him. I was gonna drag him. I was gonna take him out to the woodshed. I was gonna beat that man so bad that he was going to say 'Please, please, just don't beat me anymore.' That's how hot I was getting, that's how close I was getting."
According to Booker, WWE wanted him to cool off and did that by moving him back to the Kickoff panels and away from Graves.
"So, they said 'Hey, Book, step back a second, alright? We're gonna regroup, press the rewind button. We're gonna send you back to the Kickoff show, SmackDown and Monday Night Raw PPVs and cool ya down for a second. Because we don't want you to do anything to Corey Graves.'"
Booker T continued that if he catches Graves out and about, he's going to "do something" to the Raw Announcer.
"If I catch Corey Graves on the street, I'm gonna do something to him," Booker T said. "I ain't gonna do it at the office or the airport, but if I catch Corey Graves on the street, you see that little bouffant hairdo he got? I'm gonna rearrange it for him."

USCW Women's Championship this weekend. Friday at the Team Vision Dojo, Amber
Nova teamed with Axx Clover to defeat Jerrelle Clark and Chasyn Rance to win the
tag team titles. Clark had recently returned to wrestling after a near 7 year
hiatus after having success with the NWA, ROH, and TNA. Amber Nova is the first

Congratulations to Amber Nova who won the AWA Florida Tag Team Titles and the
USCW Women's Championship this weekend. Friday at the Team Vision Dojo, Amber
Nova teamed with Axx Clover to defeat Jerrelle Clark and Chasyn Rance to win the
tag team titles. Clark had recently returned to wrestling after a near 7 year
hiatus after having success with the NWA, ROH, and TNA. Amber Nova is the first
female in history to hold the Florida Tag Team titles. Nova and Clover will be

Saturday, Amber Nova won a 4-women tournament to win the vacant USCW Women's Championship. The title had previous been held by Malia Hosaka, Lexie Fyfe, Leva Bates, and more recently Santana Garrett. Dalton Castle On Changing His Character, Frustration With ROH Schedule, Winning ROH Championship
Ring Of Honor world champion Dalton Castle one of the top babyfaces in the entire independent circuit. His fun gimmick has endeared him to fans, but it seems like he might want a change now that he's a champion. As a recent guest on the Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast, Castle expressed a desire for people to see him as less of a joke and take him more seriously.
"I found myself doing more silly things, and to get a reaction doing the pose; then I will focus too much on that kind of stuff. Then, I will forget that I can do cool moves, and I have to remind people that I am an a-- kicker too; I don't know when it clicked, but there wasn't one moment where it happened. I think it just started where I was coming into myself more. I wanted to be taken more serious," Castle said. "I like that contrast of this 'Lady Gaga' guy walking down and once the gear comes off, the personality is the same but has the ability to kick someone's a--, and I wanted people to see me as more serious wrestler. I used to get called 'the Party Peacock,' which was a character I created on the Indies. I hate being called that now because when I got to Ring of Honor I decided right there that if I was going to be serious about this I had to drop it and just be 'the Peacock' because the 'Party Peacock' cannot be World Champion, which is what I told myself."
Castle rose to the top of ROH by defeating Cody Rhodes at Final Battle in December to win his first world title. He said he had to hide his excitement about winning the title because he knows anything can happen in the professional wrestling business. In the lead-up to him winning the title, he worked harder than he'd ever worked before so he could prove to the company and to himself that he was the right choice to be champion.
"I don't remember how early, but I never said it out loud. I never told anybody, not my wife or anybody because it didn't feel real. I felt that the second I would mention anything it would be taken away from me because that is pro wrestling. I have seen my friends being told one thing and at a hotel they are told by a third party that the story was changed, which shouldn't really affect them anyway since we are putting on a performance," he said. "I knew they were building to it but I still wasn't sure, but I wasn't going to ask either. Only thing I could do is in those months leading up is to wrestle every match and perform like I am going to be a champion, like I deserve that spot. I didn't want to leave any doubt that they are making the right decision by putting the belt on me."
Castle is enjoying his time as champion, but his reign hasn't been completely flawless. Despite his desire to be a fighting champion, Castle has only defended his title once. He admitted he is somewhat frustrated because he wishes ROH's schedule allowed him more opportunities to defend his title.
"I always feel that I should be moving forward and doing more. I won the Championship in December, and it felt great and it was really good, but it's also been really frustrating that I had this amazing moment and hit this goal that I had set, but now I want to start doing more. I want to take this title and try to elevate it. I want to try and elevate myself and ROH, but we are not working. We had an almost a month-long break," he said. "I am sitting at home and losing my mind. I got to take my wife on vacation to Cabo, of course because they have the best drinks with umbrellas in it, and I should be relaxing and having fun, but something in my head is saying that this is wrong, and that I should be working out and doing something more, and how I should be in a ring somewhere."

Shawn Michaels Talks Turning On Marty Jannetty, Crowd Reaction To 'Losing His Smile' Promo
Shawn Michaels was recently a guest on the In This Corner podcast. During the interview, he dished on some of the most memorable moments of his career.
Before embarking on his massively successful solo career, Michaels was a member of The Rockers alongside Marty Jannetty. Michaels turned on Jannetty in the infamous barbershop segment in which he sent Jannetty crashing through a glass window. Michaels looked back on the segment and said what made it work so well was how real it was. With Jannetty pleading for Michaels to remain as his tag team partner and then suffering a vicious assault, Michaels said the audience really connected with the segment.
"I had the boots on and that one was a little snug; I will say that. Every now and then it does get away from me, but I must say that Marty Jannetty took that like a champ I must say. You just never know; it's not like we went into those moments where we said that this is going to be something people are going to remember forever, and then they'll make shirts about it and reference things," Michaels said. "You are so busy in the time and in the moment; of course you want it to go well, but you absolutely have no idea that it's going to be something that people will remember forever, and I guess that is one of those things that you try to pass on to not be afraid to step outside the box. Go ahead and give it a whirl, and give it a try, again, even if the Social Media crowd is just saying this, you just don't know what is going to connect with people. Nine times out of ten it is something that is real and authentic.
"I think fans can see that, and they know the difference," he continued. "When all things are said and done I think that is probably the most important thing to be teaching; to not be afraid to put a little of yourself in there. That is what they want; they want to get to know you, and want to know the person. They want to feel what you are feeling, but it's a risk to do that, and I think that is one of the things that certainly the generation I was in, it was stumbled upon with all those nights on Monday Night because it was live. It's impossible to get it right each and every time. I think over the years those live moments that were captured; good bad or otherwise made a difference changed the Pro Wrestling business at all times."
Michaels also discussed the emotional moment when he had to relinquish his WWE championship and step away from the wrestling business due to numerous injuries. Michaels tearfully told the crowd he "lost his smile" as he had to reevaluate himself to find his love for wrestling again. Michaels said he appreciated how much the moment affected the audience and how the fans identified with him at such an emotional time in his life.
"Nothing good was going on in my life I can tell you that much. It's funny to me because I never knew at the time that some of the stuff would get so big. It is amazing to me; whether it'd be the Barber Shop, whether it'd be the 'losing my smile' moment, or the Ladder Match. Things that you would have no idea at the time would become these unbelievably huge and iconic moments over the years. I suppose that is the one thing I am thankful for, that in the long run it worked well for me," he said. "I lived a lot of my life on this live show [Raw], a lot of my ups and a lot of my downs, the good, the bad, the struggle; all of those things, I lived all that openly and wasn't smart enough to hide it and hide behind a character so to speak. I guess I wasn't a good enough actor. It was better for me to be who I was and share the things that were going on; at least, in some respect to the WWE audience. Thankfully, for me, whatever 25-30 years later it all turned out okay, but I think that is one of the things that separated me from somebody else, that there was an honesty whether good or bad in Shawn Michaels that he was sharing some real life stuff that was going on with me. It meant a lot to the people."
