AWA Nick Bockwinkel's face turn - Winnipeg Version Part 2, Then American Version

AWA Wrestling fans may not know that Nick Bockwinkel's babyface turn in October of 1985 had to be redone for the Winnipeg market. Winnipeg had been part of the AWA territory since the early '70s, but beginning in the summer of 1984, instead of our Winnipeg AWA TV show airing the same AWA squash matches as the AWA TV show in the other AWA cities, we started to have our own squash match TV tapings that replaced them. They were first held at Norberry School, then after a year they were moved to Holy Cross School. They were held on Friday, the day after the AWA card at Winnipeg Arena every third or fourth Thursday. For some inexplicable reason, Greg Gagne stopped being a part of the Winnipeg AWA cards and didn't do the TV tapings, either, around mid-1985. He was still active in the AWA but he stopped coming to Winnipeg. The main version of the Nick Bockwinkel face turn that aired in the United States involved Nick getting involved in a match betwen Greg Gagne and Larry Zbyszko to attempt to take the numbchucks away from Larry, his tag-team partner at the time. So for the Winnipeg tapings, the AWA had to break up Larry and Nick in a way that didn't involve Greg Gagne. And maybe numchucks, too, because I think numbchucks might be illegal in Canada. It's hard to make a comparison for the numchucks, because those became more part of Larry's gimmick as 1986 arrived and went on, and the AWA lost Winnipeg to the WWF in late January 1986. So in Winnipeg, Larry became pissed off that Nick agreed to team with Mad Dog Vachon for a match at the Winnipeg Arena against Russians Boris Zhukov and his manager Chris Markoff.

In part 2, you see, as part of the Holy Cross tapings, friction between Larry and Nick when Larry forgets to come out for an interview, Larry's pissed-off interview, Larry attacking Nick in the ring, Nick's asking promoter Wally Karbo for a match against Larry (where Nick has to mention Mad Dog Vachon's name because Larry seemingly forgot - if you want to see Larry talk smack about Mad Dog Vachon, go to my part 1 of this video, it's at the very end of that part 1), and finally, a short clip of the U.S. version of the angle with Greg Gagne. That clip of the U.S. version came from a 1989 "Tribute To Nick Bockwinkel" episode of the ESPN AWA show that TSN in Canada aired every Wednesday. That could have been the first time we Canadians got to see the U.S. version! You see, as us Winnipeggers saw the Norberry/Holy Cross tapings on our local TV show, the viewing public across Canada saw, on TSN, not the ESPN show yet, but an AWA show that was also shot in Winnipeg, but at the arena card at Winnipeg Arena the night before the Norberry/Holy Cross tapings. What TSN aired on that hour-long AWA show was complete matches from the Winnipeg Arena. It would start with a match from the most recent house card at the arena, then there would be some interviews, then they would show a classic match, meaning a match from the Winnipeg Arena in the early '80s joined in progress, then some more interviews and finally one more match from that most recent house card at the Winnipeg Arena. When the AWA lost Winnipeg in late January 1986, that's when TSN started to carry the AWA's ESPN program. The reason I said ".....COULD have been the first time....." above was because I didn't witness what you just read about TSN's Winnipeg-shot AWA show first-hand, I had to get the info from someone else. That's because here in Winnipeg at the time, those of us who lived on the west side of the Red River, like me, had to subscribe to a cable company that did not have the technical capabilities to provide TSN until September 1987. So, by the time I could see the AWA on TSN in September 1987, it was the straight ESPN show that TSN was giving us every Wednesday. (It actually sounds from reading that like Canadians watching the AWA on TSN in 1985 never saw the Winnipeg version of the Nick face turn, either, because the Norberry/Holy Cross matches weren't used on the TSN AWA show, but again, I have no idea from first-hand experience. Maybe they made an exception and aired it. Any interviews on that show probably would have referenced that version and not the U.S. one.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvpZdRwgikQ

AAAWWW, AEW Wrestlers Can't Handle Hearing The Truth As.. Jim Ross' Comments Reportedly Bring Controversy In AEW

There is said to be controversy within AEW over recent comments made by announcer Jim Ross.

Ross recently discussed today's pro wrestling on his "Grilling JR" podcast, and the lack of evolution. While some fans and wrestlers agreed with JR, others publicly disagreed with his comments on how some moves aren't being used correctly. There's no word on the extent of the internal issues stemming from the comments, but Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that there is controversy within the company due to what JR said.

JR was asked about not thinking the business has evolved into a better place, and how it relates to today's wrestlers using finishers from yesteryear as just regular moves.

"No, that evolution of the business is bulls--t. Or that the business is evolving," JR said. "How the f--k do you know that it's evolving? Not you Conrad, but in general. Yes, they should be protected. Of course they should. 'Well, we don't sell right hands. But if you hit me with your left, it will register.' What!? 'But if you hit me with that right, I'll sell it like a drunk man.' Come on; that's so stupid.

"The DDT is a finish instead of a transition spot. Shawn Michaels, same thing… the superkicks are just a part of the flow of a match. Nobody wins with it, so what's that say to you? Does it say that back in the day guys were more proficient at delivering a DDT or a superkick than they are in this generation where things are evolving or changing? I want some proof of that s--t. I want somebody to prove to me that the changing of the wrestling business is what it is today and that it's making a difference. Maybe it is in some people's eyes, but is it making a difference? I say no."

JR also criticized when wrestlers dive over the top rope onto a group of wrestlers who are foes, but are just standing still side-by-side on the outside. Ross said no one ever wins with that move and it's just done for a pop.

"They go, 'Holy s--t! This is awe-some!' It's a spot, folks. It's a trapeze act. Come on! …I don't buy into that," JR said. "The DDT is a great finish and it should be used as such unless you're not as proficient as Jake the Snake was and you can't execute it. What if I said it on commentary, 'Boy folks, do you remember those DDTs and when somebody hit that it was over? I guess these guys just aren't as good at it as they used to be.'

"That ain't gonna help anybody, but there's a thought there and same with the superkick. So yeah, I'm not big on that 'the business has changed.' Tell me how the business has changed that you can bastardize established moves."

The spot where wrestlers gather at ringside and wait for a dive is often criticized by fans and other wrestlers on social media. For what it's worth, Bryan Alvarez noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that AEW wrestlers were yelled at for a similar spot after at least one recent show. No other details were provided.

AEW TNT Champion Darby Allin, who has made his name with some of the moves that JR criticized, was asked about JR's comments during a recent interview with Riju Dasgupta of Sportskeeda.

"I love Jim Ross and I agree with him," Allin responded.

AEW star Brandon Cutler recently joked about JR's comments when plugging the 14-man match that was advertised for last night's Dynamite episode.

"THIS WEDNESDAY on #AEWDynamite 7 vs 7," Cutler wrote in the tweet seen below. "We're gonna go outside, cluster up like coils, stand there in a huddle, friends and foes together, side-by-side to catch some leaping idiot going over the top. Can't wait 8pm TnT Hopefully for 1M viewers let's fn go."

Cutler ended up pulled from the match as it was changed to a 12-man bout due to Wardlow missing the show because of a family issue.

Regarding JR's comments, it was noted by Paul Davis of WrestlingNews.co that there was a feeling within AEW that the legendary announcer and former WWE Talent Relations boss made a lot of good points, but some wrestlers are less likely to listen to him while he's publicly knocking their work.

"Look I know there is a lot that JR can teach us but burying us on the show or on his podcast is only going to make some of us ignore what he says," one unnamed wrestler told the website. "I grew up watching JR and he is the best and we love it that he calls our matches but maybe find a different way to criticize the wrestlers in the ring. Everyone is doing what they have been taught. I agree that sometimes things need to be slowed down but that won't happen when the guy who is supposed to help put us over is going out there and publicly burying us."

Another AEW talent echoed similar sentiments, noting that AEW trainer Jerry Lynn is someone who receives a lot of praise backstage because he's seen as a straight shooter who gives constructive criticism.

WHO'S BEEN SCRIPTING ROMAN REIGNS? (The Answer Is, Pretty Fucking Obvious)

While Paul Heyman and Roman Reigns have forged a strong on-air relationship in recent months, much of what Roman Reigns is saying in promos has been written by Heyman as well.

As has been documented in WWE storylines in recent months, Heyman has relationships dating back to the late 1970s and early '80s with members of the Anoa'i family, which helped build the "Head of the Table" persona that Reigns has portrayed in recent months on Smackdown.

Michael Hayes has been very hands on in the process and has been personally producing Reigns' big PPV matches of late.

All this talent helping Reigns but they can't improve the product overall.. Boy does that, say something, eh?

RING OF HONOR FINAL BATTLE-MARTY SCURLL RUMOR KILLER

In regard to rumors that Marty Scurll will return to Ring of Honor on tonight's Final Battle PPV, which apparently were sparked after a Scurll Instagram post that led some fans to believe that was the case, there appears to be no truth to those rumblings.

Scurll was not seen in Baltimore at any point during the recent ROH Bubble, PPV and TV tapings.

Scurll disappeared from the ROH website roster several months back and the company's creative is currently being handled by Hunter Johnston aka Delirious.    Scurll last appeared for the company prior to the COVID-19 pandemic causing ROH's pause in production, just before he was slated to begin rolling out his own creative plans for the promotion.

Scurll was named during the #SpeakingOut movement online over the summer, leading to ROH to announce they were opening an investigation into the claims against named ROH talents.  To date, there has been no official update of Scurll's status beyond that announcement.  Scurll released several statements online in his defense but has made his Twitter account private and it should be noted the original accusation was also deleted from Twitter as well.

FORMER WWE DEVELOPMENTAL TALENT BRETT DIBIASE ADMITS GUILT IN RELATION TO MISSISSIPPI EMBEZZLEMENT SCANDAL

Former WWE developmental talent Brett DiBiase admitted today in court that he was guilty of making fraudulent statements for the purposes of defrauding the government according to reporter Anya Wolfe of Mississippi Today.

Back in May, findings were released from an audit into the Mississippi Department of Human Services after arrests were made this past February in one of the largest embezzlement scandals ever in the history of that office, a scandal that saw direct connections the DiBiase wrestling family.

Brett DiBiase was among those indicted several months ago as part of the scandal, which saw the former director of the state welfare agency and five others charged in one of the biggest embezzlement scandals in the history of the office.  As PWInsider.com reported at the time, it was alleged that Brett was given funds to go to a drug treatment facility in Malibu that was earmarked for Mississippi's welfare programs.   DiBiase admitted that was true today in court.

The Associated Press later ran a follow-up story on the DiBiase family connection based on a revelation that WWE Hall of Famer Ted DiBiase Sr.'s non-profit religious organization, Heart of David Ministries, had reportedly received more than $2.1 million in welfare from the state of Mississippi after his son Brett began working for the State.  The organization had received just $5,000 in grants in 2013, but pulled in $271,000 in welfare money, the same year Brett was hired as a senior official at the Mississippi Department of Human Services.  DiBiase’s group received as much as $900,000 one year.   According to the article, Heart of David Ministries spent all $2,126,739 it had received from May 2017 through earlier this budget year.

DiBiase Sr. was paid $84,517 as president of the organization.  Heart of David Ministries pledged in a 2018 contract to “establish a network of partnerships, services and resources throughout Mississippi communities for faith-based and self activities" but there is no word on how the money was actually used.  At the same time it was receiving money from the State of Mississippi, 98% of welfare requests were being turned down by the State.  The Ministry was no longer receiving any aid from the State, according to the AP.  According to the AP article at the time, a woman who answered the door at the home of Ted DiBiase Sr. in Clinton, MS called the Clarion Ledger (the newspaper which initially broke the news) past reporting “fictitious.” but declined to comment.

The AP article also revealed that the Mississippi Community Education Center also paid Brett DiBiase’s brother, former WWE star Ted DiBiase Jr., to provide training to human services employees in late 2018 and early 2019.  This past August, the United States Federal Government sought to seize the $1.5 million Madison, MS home of former WWE star Ted DiBiase Jr.   While DiBiase Jr. is not accused of a crime, federal agents did step in to prevent him from selling his home a week before that sale was to be completed.

The May 2020 findings from the investigation reads as follows:

Audit of DHS Reveals Millions Wasted

May 4, 2020

Auditor’s Office Questions Over $90 Million in Spending of Welfare Grants and Other Funds

JACKSON – Millions of dollars of grants from the Mississippi Department of Human Services (DHS) were misspent, converted to personal use, spent on family members and friends of staffers and grantees, or wasted according to an audit released today by State Auditor Shad White.

“This completed audit of DHS for the previous year shows the most egregious misspending my staff have seen in their careers at the Office of the State Auditor,” said White. “When you read this one-hundred-plus page audit, you will see that, if there was a way to misspend money, it seems DHS leadership or their grantees thought of it and tried it.”

The audit of DHS came as a part of the Office of the State Auditor’s yearly Single Audit of federal money flowing through state agencies.

The audit of DHS showed massive sums were funneled to grantees like the Mississippi Community Education Center (MCEC) and the Family Resource Center of North Mississippi (FRC), two non-profits. Those grantees were given over $98 million in DHS grants over the last three years, mostly from the program Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).

The audit’s formal finding is that over $94 million of that grant money has been “questioned,” meaning auditors either saw clear misspending or could not verify the money had been lawfully spent. Examples of questioned spending included:

•           MCEC and FRC used TANF money to hire lobbyists with TANF money, which is unallowable, often with no paperwork describing the work the lobbyists were hired to do.

•           MCEC awarded contracts to and hired former DHS Director John Davis’s family members, sometimes paying them up front in lump sums.

•           MCEC and FRC paid large sums to wrestlers Ted Dibiase, Ted Dibiase, Jr., and Brett Dibiase for work that was not performed, for unreasonable travel costs, or with little proof the programs helped the needy.

•           MCEC and FRC used TANF money to fund religious concerts with no proof they benefitted the needy.

•           MCEC made multiple donations with TANF money—like donations to the American Heart Association, the Mississippi Highway Patrol, booster clubs, pageants, universities—and provided no proof the donations were used to help the needy. FRC also made unallowable donations.

Among the grantees, MCEC was particularly dependent on TANF funding and engaged in extensive misspending. From 2016 to 2019, MCEC was given over $60 million in grants from DHS, while raising just under $1.6 million from other sources. Examples of questioned spending at MCEC included:

•           MCEC paid Victory Sports Foundation TANF money for fitness programs for Mississippi legislators and other elected officials/staffers at no charge.

•           MCEC purchased three vehicles with grant funds, each for over $50,000, for Nancy New (Director of MCEC), Zach New, and Jess New. MCEC also paid salaries, cell phone bills, and other costs for a variety of members of the New family.

•           MCEC made many unallowable sports-related expenditures—like sponsoring a college baseball tournament—for services that could not be proven to benefit the needy. Some sports-related spending was for services that were not actually performed.

•           MCEC transferred over $6 million to a private school and organization owned by Nancy New and also purchased curricula and supplies with TANF funds for the school.

•           MCEC paid a speeding ticket for Nancy New with TANF funds.

•           MCEC issued a $3,000 check to the bookkeeper of MCEC with a handwritten note saying the payment was actually for John Davis.

•           MCEC paid a variety of consultants, including Jess New, for no clear deliverables or where there was no proof the spending met TANF requirements.

•           Zach New took a loan out against his MCEC retirement plan and repaid the loan with TANF money.

•           MCEC paid for extensive unallowable advertising, like using TANF money to advertise at the NCAA basketball tournament and a college football bowl game. TANF money was also used to purchase tickets to a college football game.

•           MCEC paid excessive rent well above market value to a holding company owned by Zach and Nancy New. Sometimes the rent paid for spaces that were not used for TANF-related purposes.

The unallowable spending was achieved through a variety improper activities, like: DHS Director Davis limiting monitoring of subgrantees; forged documents; subgrantees providing summaries of expenditures that did not match actual expenditures; a limited or nonexistent RFP process for selecting subgrantees; fraudulent accounting entries that misstate actual payees; a failure by DHS staff to report obviously improper transactions to law enforcement; and others.

Auditors have recommended current DHS leadership take steps to remedy these problems. “DHS staff should immediately move to seize any property that was purchased by grantees with taxpayer money, as that property belongs to the taxpayers,” said White. “That property does not belong to the Auditor’s office, so we cannot do this for them, but it should be marked as DHS property, and DHS should use their legal authority and move quickly to seize it.”

The audit also suggested DHS conduct an internal investigation into current and former DHS staff who may have played a role in the fraud.

“Thank you to our team of professional auditors for their incredible work,” said White. “The doggedness and attention to detail shown by Stephanie Palmertree, Michael Torres, Jason Ashley, and their team of CPAs led to this critical report. Their work is the first step to restoring public trust in DHS.”

The Single Audit report is now forwarded to the federal government, who will determine the consequences for DHS. Those consequences could include cuts to future grants from the federal government or penalties.

While this Single Audit report concluded the Auditor’s office’s audit of DHS, the criminal investigation of this matter by the Auditor’s office and federal authorities continues. “This audit should be a wake-up call to everyone in government. The old way of doing things, where you do whatever your boss or a person who controls a lot of money tells you to do, or you ignore the law around how to spend money because you think no one is looking—those days are over,” said White.

DESPITE AN APPEARANCE BY KENNY OMEGA, IMPACT WRESTLING ON AXS TV AUDIENCE DROPS THUS, PROVING ME RIGHT, AGAIN)

I said it last week when I wrote this article out. ( https://billsbrandnewblog.blogspot.com/2020/12/kenny-omega-appearance-boosts-impact_9.html ) and I said then, "Wait four weeks and when the ratings are the same or lower, remember me saying 'I told you so' ".

It looks like I don't HAVE to wait four weeks, because it's already happened in ONE WEEK, aaaahahahahahahahahaha!!!!.

Proving I was right all along that Kenny Omega being on Impact wouldn't have long lasting effect just shows that I.. Know better than the "Meltzer Marks" and haters when it comes to stuff like this. Always have, and always will.

So thank Omega for showing that here in America, he's a just a one hit wonder, a one trick pony, so to speak. And that after a one week, ahem 'boost' that really wasn't a boost, His appearance this week didn't... DO SHIT!

So now that I don't have to wait four weeks to say I told you so? Guess what "Marks"..

I told you so..

And since proof is a mother fucker, and I'm always gonna be the mother fucker who has the proof? Boom. Read it and weep, baby cakes.

The 12/15 episode of Impact on AXS TV had 177,000. Down from last week's 221,000.

12/1/20 had 166,000

12/8/20 had 221,000

12/15/20 had 177,000

Sting would've had more of a long lasting effect of Omega, and now Omega can accept the reality that he, doesn't make much of a difference when it comes to wrestling in America.

EC3 has confirmed that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

He revealed his positive diagnosis to Chris Van Vliet. As a result, he will not be a part of Ring of Honor’s Final Battle event this Friday.

“I’ve been quarantined for a week to 10 days,” he told Villet. “At this point, I have covid, and I’m at the tail end of it. It sucked a little bit. Some of it wasn’t bad. I’m healthy so I was fortunate. It infected my parents who were visiting me, whoops, so they had to stay longer so I’ve had no alone time."

“I would say I’m at 90%,” he continued .”This is the tail end of it. I’ve had none of the respiratory issues. It felt like the flu and a moderately bad cold some of the time.”

Jim Cornette on Jim Ross Upsetting AEW Wrestlers (Maybe Instead Of Getting Upset, They Should Learn From Someone Like Him)

But they won't, because most of this era's 'workers', either don't know how to 'sell', or don't WANT to. many of them don't have the basic fundamentals of what 'telling a story within a match' really is. And, they obviously don't want to know.

With veterans like Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson, Dean Malenko and even Jericho working there. You'd think they'd be able to instill this into the younger guys on the roster.

Maybe they just want the paycheck and don't give a shit anymore too.

ETHAN PAGE IS PRETTY MUCH DONE WITH IMPACT WRESTLING

One half of the longest-reigning Impact Tag Team Champions may be done with the company in a few weeks.

Ethan Page's two year contract is up at the end of 2020 and in this week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that the belief within the company and with his friends is that he is not going to re-sign.

On his YouTube channel last week, he posted a video from a set of recent tapings where in the end, he alluded to the fact he could be done, including a line asking his fans to wish him the best in his future endeavors because "I f**kin' need it."

In a singles match from Saturday's Final Resolution show, Page lost to Karl Anderson with a tag team title shot on the line for he and The North partner Josh Alexander. Meltzer said he was told Alexander has nine months remaining on his Impact deal so the team would be done for now. The duo are two-time Impact Tag Team Champions and held the titles for a record 380 days in their first reign with the second lasting 21 days.

Page started with the company with limited appearances in late-2017 and joined up with old partner Alexander as The North in April 2019.

Starting Tuesday, Impact has three TV shows left the rest of the year in which they could write Page off.

ROH Pulls EC3 And Other Wrestlers From Final Battle Due To COVID-19

ROH has pulled EC3, Kenny King, Flamita and Bandido from the upcoming Final Battle pay-per-view due to COVID-19 concerns.

It was announced today that as a result of pre-travel coronavirus testing, the four performers have been pulled from the December 18 pay-per-view. All four wrestlers are said to be doing well and are resting at home, and are expected to return some time in 2021 when ROH returns following the pay-per-view.

ROH will be announcing changes to the Final Battle card during Final Battle Hour One, which airs free from 8-9pm on the night of the show.

EC3 was scheduled for a Grudge Match with Jay Briscoe, while Flamita and Bandido were scheduled to team with Rey Horus to defend their ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Titles against Shane Taylor Promotions.

WWE WORKING TO 'REFINE' TALENTS (UM, I WONDER WHEN THEY'RE GONNA GO AND 'REFINE' THEIR PRODUCT? LOL )

It's been reported that there are a number of WWE talents who have been ordered to work on refining and improving their in-ring skills at the request of WWE management, said to be a Vince McMahon edict.

Otis, Keith Lee, Dabbo Kato, Dio Maddin and AJ Styles' bodyguard Omos are among the contingent that the company has been working with on improving and refining their work inside the ring with those talents taking part in regular workouts at the WWE Performance Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

it's been  previously reported that despite being drafted to Raw, Dabbo Kato and Artuo Ruas had been not yet been utilized as the belief is they needed additional seasoning.  These workouts are part of that process and have been ongoing in recent months.   Ruas has been out of action since injuring his arm while working a NXT bout against KUSHIDA.

Since McMahon is throwing 'edict's' around I guess it would be too much to ask for him to edict himself to refine his product since it sucks so much, and has sucked for years.

Yeah I know, too much to ask.

This is happening because Vince McMahon allegedly 'threw a fit' over the ability of these talents. Too bad nobody there has the balls to say "Hey Vince, why don't YOU, get in the ring and show us you can do better"?

Yeah I know.. Nobody there will ever, have them kind of balls.

WWF'S ZEUS/'TINY' LISTER PASSES AWAY AT 62

TMZ reported Thursday that Tommy "Tiny" Lister, aka Zeus in WWF, was found dead in his Marina del Rey, CA, apartment at just 62 years old.

While the details are still sketchy as of this writing, friends of Lister asked the L.A. County Sheriff's Department to do a wellness check as they hadn't heard from him since Wednesday night. They reported the police believe it was due to natural causes, but won't know until an autopsy is done.

In a quote to Variety, Lister's manager said he had been displaying symptoms of COVID-19 in recent days and had to cancel shooting on a film after getting sick.

Lister appeared with Hulk Hogan in the 1989 film No Holds Barred as Zeus, a monster heel that Hogan (Rip Thomas) eventually beat. That was parlayed into an angle on WWF TV that resulted in Zeus teaming with Randy Savage against Hogan and Brutus Beefcake at the 1989 SummerSlam pay-per-view.

The Hogan/Zeus rivalry continued through Survivor Series where he was part of The Million Dollar Team and finally in a tag team steel cage match at a one-off December pay-per-view that included the movie and the match.

He left wrestling until he was booked for a 1990 event against Abdullah The Butcher in Puerto Rico. He then returned In 1996 for WCW as Z-Gangsta, wrestling just once in a "Doomsday Cage" match at Uncensored as part of The Alliance To End Hulkamania.

Lister, blind in one eye, was best known for his role in the movie Friday with appearances in The Dark Knight, Next Friday, The Fifth Element, Jackie Brown, Austin Powers: Goldmember, and more on his resume. He stayed busy with small roles and has parts in 11 projects that are in various stages of production.
