MLW Underground #18: Jerry Lynn vs. Homicide
•Jerry Lynn vs. Homicide
•The Sandman vs. Simon Diamond This week, the Underground is highlighted by “The Evil F’N Show” Jerry Lynn issuing an open challenge to any young lion in MLW willing to step up and face him. With “Sinister Minister” James Mitchell by his side and a newfound “evil” edge motivating him, Jerry Lynn looks to make a big statement and continue his ascent up the MLW rankings. But could such a plan backfire? Is this open challenge just as easily a chance for some young hungry upstart to secure quite possibly one of the biggest wins of their career? The second match in the MLW Global Tag Crown Challenge sees “The Hardcore Icon” The Sandman fight Simon Diamond. Can the legendary brawler from Philly withstand The Extreme Horsemen’s numbers and mind games to finally secure a title shot for himself and “Dr. Death” Steve Williams? The vendetta between Da Hit Squad and The Samoan Island Tribe heats up. Plus: updates on MLW World Heavyweight Champion Steve Corino, CM Punk, Mikey Whipwreck, Sabu, and more! Thunder Rosa On Busted Open Radio
Last week, NWA President Billy Corgan clarified that former NWA Women’s World Champion Thunder Rosa is under contract through 2021. While appearing on Busted Open Radio, Rosa weighed her options and stated that she’d like to be in a company where she can continue her outside projects such as Mission Pro Wrestling.
“Because of all the projects I have on the side, it has to be a place where I’m able to continue to work with what I’m working on. As you guys know, I run and I’m part-owner of Mission Pro Wrestling. It’s an all-women’s show and I’m not just talking about in the ring. Everybody that runs stuff is women and there’s so much stuff that I’m working on with other projects that I have with this to make it bigger, so if I’m able to do it in [the] NWA, then NWA. If I’m able to do it with AEW, probably, but now knowing what WWE is doing with things that we have on the side, [it’s] gonna be very difficult for me to work on my personal projects and sometimes, those personal projects are the things that bring you the most joy in life and I don’t want that joy to be taken away from me for money. If that’s what I have to sacrifice sometimes, then I’d rather be happy than be enslaved somewhere where I’m gonna be there for like, I don’t know how long.”
“I am signed with NWA. I have another year with them and when it’s my time, it’s gonna be my time and when my time comes man, I am not gonna come as just another person on the roster, mark my words. I’m coming for everything, I’m coming to be on top, just like I did this first time. My value is gonna be bigger, because I’m gonna be a better wrestler, I’m gonna cut better promos. My body’s gonna look chiseled. I’m gonna have a better record [in MMA] so when I [get out there] I’m gonna be like, ‘This is all I have to offer. What do you have to offer me?’ That’s what I want when I get to a bigger company. It’s not the opposite way like, ‘Excuse me, excuse me! Can I get a contract?’ Like no, I want them to want me. That’s how it should be.”
Rosa also spoke about the dynamic between herself and Ivelisse. Rosa first clarified that there is no issue with Ivelisse from her side and says she’ll always handle her in-ring work with professionalism.
“Well you know, I never had any issues with her [Ivelisse]. I’m just gonna put it out there, never had any issues with her. I worked with her in Lucha Underground, I worked with her in other promotions and I mean, I thought the match was going well and then you guys saw what you saw. We made it work, we finished, nobody got hurt and that to me, that’s the most important part. I am not gonna — like you said, you gotta make it work and that’s what I attempted to do and even to the finish, I made sure my opponent was safe at all times, no matter what happened in-between. So, like I said, like I told you earlier, my promise with anybody that I step in the ring [with], regardless of our relationship inside or outside is to keep my opponent safe. I’m not trying to kill you. It’s not MMA. They’re not paying me a bunch of money to try to kill you. This is a dance and I try to have the best dances possible, so, that’s what happened.”

EC3 & Briscoes vs Shane Taylor & SOS (ROH Highlights)
In his ROH in-ring debut, EC3 joined forces with Ring of Honor legends the Briscoes against the formidable trio of Shane Taylor & SOS! Here are the highlights.
KYLIE RAE IS NO LONGER A PROFESSIONAL WRESTLER (ACCORDING TO HER)
In an update posted on her Patreon account on Monday morning, Kylie Rae announced that she's no longer a professional wrestler.
Rae was scheduled to challenge Deonna Purrazzo for the Knockouts Championship at Bound for Glory on October 24. With Rae not appearing at the show, Su Yung instead faced Purrazzo and won the Knockouts title. Dave Meltzer wrote about the situation in last week's edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter:
Purrazzo was to defend the title against Kylie Rae. In tracing back the story, Kylie Rae (Brianna Sperry, 28) was injured two weeks earlier in a match at The Collective, and missed one of her matches that weekend. But everything seemed fine for the show. She was in Nashville at the hotel on 10/23. And then, on the day of the PPV, she never showed up. She never left word. There was the hope during the show that she would show up. Because of the lack of communications, Impact never said anything.
It got weird on the broadcast. The match was held next to last. Before it started Josh Mathews talked about the match as if it was happening. At no point in the show did they indicate anything was wrong. They played the video package for the Purrazzo vs. Rae title match with all the weeks of angles leading to it. Purrazzo was in the ring and Rae’s music played. She never came out. Purrazzo cut a promo about how she wasn’t surprised by this and issued an open challenge to anyone, man or woman, who wanted to face her for the title.
Eventually Yung came out. Yung had been a babyface, Susie, dressed all in white, as Rae’s best friend. It was always pushed that innocent Susie was the alter ego of vile heel Su Yung. And in recent weeks, it was pushed that Su Yung was starting to invade Susie’s body, and how Rae doesn’t know about Su Yung. It appeared that Rae and Yung were being set up for a program. But with no transition, Su Yung came out, and ended up winning the title.
No mention was made about Rae on the broadcast and they really didn’t know anything at the time.
When she never answered messages from people in the company, the promotion contacted the hotel for a wellness check on her and found that she wasn’t there and had checked out. They also contacted her boyfriend and other friends. Later, I believe after the show was over, they did get word that she was physically okay. It was a very sensitive subject that nobody was allowed to talk about. During the show it evidently wasn’t addressed since at the time they didn’t know the situation and didn’t want to say something that could look bad in hindsight.
It was never said, but the idea they appeared to be pushing was that maybe Susie turned into Su Yung and laid out Rae, but that was never said and only slightly hinted at.
Obviously, Rae had issues in 2019 when she was in AEW and was expected to be one of the top women’s stars in the promotion. AEW was very quiet about the situation. She disappeared in June and was out of wrestling for three months, resurfacing at an independent show in Chicago in September. During that period AEW was quiet, and then in September, before she returned, Tony Khan just said that she had asked to be released from her contract and they granted her a release. When she returned, she never really gave answers but was very emotional on the return.

During a recent production we placed a camera in front of show Producer/Director David Marquez. His job is something like a Conductor of an Orchestra. Each of his commands are specific and believe it or not he’s speaking to about 28 Technicians and Engineers plus adding auditable “notes” to the Commentary team. When making live television not everything goes as planned and the director has to think on his toes causing the mood to become stressful yet energetic. Imagine that, Dave Meltzer gets something wrong, again. It's nothing new really as he regularly gets things wrong as of late, so this isn't surprising at all. Meltzer has a habit of trying to make his 'wishful thinking' seem like credible reporting and when he does, he has a habit of getting checked.. And put in his place on it. And sadly, the "Meltzer Marks" fall for this, every single time as well.
It started out with this, Meltzer's own words on Twitter.
But since most 'credible' wrestling writers such as myself already know she's under contract to the NWA, I didn't fall for this line of bullshit. But tons of 'Meltzer Marks' sure did, as well as at least two dozen so-called 'wrestling news' sites on Twitter fell for it too as they posted the same thing.
This lead to Thunder Rosa herself to tease and play with Meltzer and the 'Meltzer Marks' by posting this on Twitter, knowing she was under contract to the NWA and wasn't going anywhere.
Then came this from Billy Corgan, president of, the NWA, who went ahead and put Meltzer in his place with the truth.
Of course you know, Dave Meltzer won't retract what he said and admit he was wrong. Lord knows how many times I've checked him, gave him proof that I checked him and in the end he blocked me because he didn't like being put in his place by me. Meltzer feels admitting he's wrong is 'beneath him'. Even though any blind man can see, just by what I posted here, that he called it wrong... Again..
I could go ahead and post hours and hours of 'Meltzer Marks' speculating on whether Rosa was gonna go to AEW or WWE. That's how much the "Meltzer Marks" fell for this line of bullshit. And I bet the two dozen 'news' sites on Twitter haven't and won't put a retraction that they too, were wrong because they, like the 'Meltzer Marks' fell for the wishful thinking that is now Dave's reporting.
Which is why there's people like myself, who know better and have the knowledge to know, when Meltzer is lying just to get click bait and attention to himself. You can thank me now for always knowing better.
Too bad, the 'Meltzer Marks' won't ever smarten up.. But that's why they are marks, they don't wanna smarten up, apparently.

Road Dogg Quits Twitter After Being Punked By Shane Helms
WWE NXT Producer "Road Dogg" Jesse James has announced that he is quitting Twitter.
"This is a message to all the people that have helped me along the way and maybe a few I've helped; I'm signing off of @Twitter it has been really great interacting with you all. #HOPE #SOBRIETY #SERENITY #OUDK #THANKUGOD #POSITIVITY," Road Dogg tweeted on Tuesday.
Earlier in the week, Road Dogg engaged in a Twitter argument with furloughed WWE producer Shane Helms, aka The Hurricane. Road Dogg and Helms went back-and-forth over the subject of wearing masks as a preventive measure during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In his initial tweet, Road Dogg was agreeing with a fan on Twitter, who noted how certain people from "The Left" were pushing fear into the masses and that people could contract the virus even while wearing a mask.
"That's common sense Jay and it's rare these days. But they think we're crazy too. Social media isn't helping that's for sure," he tweeted.
Helms replied to the tweet from Road Dogg by stating, "People get killed wearing seatbelts too. But wearing one still increases your odds of not dying. See how that works? That's common sense."
When Road Dogg "agreed to disagree" with The Hurricane, Helms responded with, "Yeah, I'll agree that you don't understand how odds or statistics work and I'll disagree that you have a clue about what common sense is."
Road Dogg said Helms wasn't being tolerant for someone who claims to be "woke," to which Helms replied with, "Never claimed to be woke, never had to. And tolerance of ignorance doesn't help anyone. People's lives are at stake, maybe you should try to "wake up" if that makes you feel edgier."
EC3 and Shane Taylor's War of Words Escalates!
Shane Taylor wasn't mentioned when EC3 listed the Ring of Honor greats, and now the two are on a collision course that's going to turn violent THIS WEEKND on ROH TV!
TRACY SMOTHERS PASSES AWAY
Tracy Smothers, who had a long-spanning career that includes runs in WCW (as one half of The Southern Boys/Young Pistols), Extreme Championship Wrestling (as a member of the FBI), the WWF (as Freddy Joe Floyd), Memphis Wrestling, Smoky Mountain Wrestling, Continental and countless other promotions passed away this morning following a long battle with cancer.
Smothers announced in November 2019 that he was battling lymphoma. In recent weeks, Smothers was also dealing with heart issues brought on from his past chemotherapy and had endured hernia surgery earlier this month. There had been several GoFundMe campaigns and benefit events to assist him in recent months.
Born and raised in Springfield, TN, Smothers broke into the business in the late 1980s, where he and Steve Armstrong teamed regularly as the Wild-Eyed Southern Boys, feuding with the Stud Stable, Robert Fuller and Jimmy Golden in Southeastern Championship Wrestling aka The Continental Wrestling Federation. That early era even included Smothers wrestling a live bear.
The team moved to WCW, where they had one of the best tag team matches of the era against the Midnight Express (Stan Lane and Bobby Eaton version) at the 1990 Great American Bash PPV for the United States Tag Team Championship, a phenomenal match that is still regularly used to teach tag team psychology by a number of wrestling trainers. The team was turned heel and rechristened The Young Pistols, feuding with The Fabulous Freebirds.
After leaving WCW, Smothers moved on to Jim Cornette’s Smoky Mountain Wrestling, where he had the longest, more consistent singles push of his career, including a great feud with Dirty White Boy Tony Anthony over the SMW Heavyweight Championship, later joining with DWB as The THUGS ("T is for TERRIBLE H is for HELL U is for UGLY G is for JAIL, because a THUG CAN'T SPELL") after turning heel.
SMW couldn't have asked for a stronger babyface for their audience at the time. Smothers also had a memorable feud with the late Chris Candido as well as other SMW regulars, including Brian Lee, The Gangstas and The Heavenly Bodies. The SMW vs. USWA feud in Memphis (which was so heated at the time that SMW fans that came to the shows nearly ended up in altercations at the shows) saw Smothers work in Memphis as a heel. When SMW shut down, Smothers continued on in Memphis.
He was brought into the WWF in the mid-1990s, one of many good in-ring performers who were hired to work undercard roles and put over pushed stars. Rechristened Freddy Joe Floyd, Smothers was utilized to help give heels additional credibility. The ring name was a tribute to Gerald and Jack Brisco, utilizing a combination of their legitimate first names with Smothers now billed from their legitimate hometown, Bowlegs, Oklahoma. With the exception of a short program with Justin Hawk Bradshaw (JBL), Smothers never received a push, but worked with every heel in the promotion at the time getting a push, including Triple H and Steve Austin.
As part of WWF’s relationship with ECW at the time, Smothers was allowed to be booked by Extreme Championship Wrestling and soon shifted over to working for the promotion full-time as part of the Full Blooded Italians act with James “Little Guido” Maritato and Tommy Rich. While Guido was indeed Italian, the gimmick at the time was that many of the other members were not. Smothers at the time was billed from Nashville, Italy with ECW announcer Joey Styles quipping that Smothers couldn’t find Southern Italy on a map of Italy. The duo would hold the ECW World Tag Team Titles and were often placed in the position of kicking off the live shows, an important position, since they were setting the stage for the rest of the show.
Behind the scenes in ECW, Smothers was the gatekeeper in many ways to get into the promotion, running workout sessions with talents before every show. Prospective talents who arrived looking for a job had to go through the workouts alongside ECW’s regulars and if they received Smothers’ thumbs up, they were likely to be given a chance to appear on shows, opening the doors to potentially getting a regular job for the company. Smothers was often credited by those working for the company as being responsible for helping them get better as workers and for helping the morale of the locker room in a major way. He was also legendary for his toughness in that circle, especially after a huge riot after a fan attacked Balls Mahoney, leading to full scale insanity that saw a SWAT team called to the building. In the middle of the chaos, Smothers refused to back down from anyone, even shadow boxing K-9 officers to keep them away before things calmed down.
After ECW closed, Smothers worked a number of ECW reunions, including the first One Night Stand, the only event where every member of the FBI actually all appeared together. When JBL got into a legitimate physical fight, attacking The Blue Meanie (who was working the show closing brawl with staples in his head), Smothers was among those who went after JBL and ran him from the ring. Angered over the situation, Smothers would challenge JBL to legitimately fight him (something no sane person would do, as Smothers was considered ridiculously tough in real life among those in the business, even if he didn’t try to broadcast it) but JBL smartly didn’t accept the offer.
Post-ECW, Smothers wrestled for a number of promotions, great and small, across the spectrum of the independent scene. He teamed with fellow ECW star Chris Hamrick as Southern Comfort, was a regular at times for Ian Rotten’s IWA Mid-South and ICP’s Juggalo Championship Wrestling. He was beloved on the independent scene, where he gave to a number of younger stars. In many cases, he was the first "name" talent they worked regularly with and Smothers never held himself above anyone else, choosing instead to help everyone get better, making locker rooms more fun and joyous to be in and providing a much-needed bridge from the past to today. There are dozens of talents in WWE, AEW, ROH and Impact today who were made better because they sat under the Smothers learning tree.
As a wrestler, Smothers was a hell of a hand and was a valued veteran who would pass on his knowledge and understanding of how to get the most out of the crowd to others. He was extremely loved in every locker room he was ever in and there’s no way to describe his passing as anything but a massive loss for professional wrestling. He could carry himself with credibility and was so versatile in the ring that he could veer into comedy without ever sacrificing that credibility, going from good back and forth wrestling to dance-offs with The Blue Meanie. He had that innate ability to read and turn a crowd for him or against him and could make them sway back and forth in the same match if he needed. In many ways, especially in 2020, he was without peer in that regard.
Smothers published his autobiography Everybody Dies (taken from a regular comment Smothers would make on the mic later in his career), co-written by historian John Cosper, earlier this year.
Smothers was only 58 years old.
NEW NWA WOMEN'S CHAMPION CROWNED
Serena Deeb defeated Thunder Rosa to win the NWA Women's Championship on tonight's United Wrestling Network Primetime Live PPV.
The win represents an incredible turnaround for Deeb, who had been all but retired after taking a Coaching position at the WWE Performance Center. Deeb returned to the ring as a full-time competitor after being released as part of WWE's cutbacks this past April. She has signed with All Elite Wrestling and the title win marks another milestone in that comeback run.
We are told that Rosa remains under contract to the NWA, so this is not a situation where her leaving for another company precipitated the title switch.
you can expect to see the NWA Women's title continue to be represented on AEW Dynamite as she'll be defending it tonight.
