KEN RESNICK DISCUSSES MISTAKES MADE BY VERNE GAGNE AS THE WWF EXPANDED NATIONALLY

Ken Resnick talks about the pro wrestling landscape in 1983, just prior to Hulkamania invading New York.

On the latest edition of Wrestling with History on VOC Nation, Ken Resnick talked about the period in 1983 prior to the WWF recruiting Hulk Hogan and going national.  Resnick discussed business mistakes made by Verne Gagne, Hogan giving Gagne an opportunity to match the WWF’s offer, the territory system, and much more.  Here are some highlights:

On the health of the AWA’s business in 1983 prior to McMahon’s big push to go national:  “Business was great…Business was booming…There was a time, this was probably (19)84 where on a Sunday night the AWA sold out the St Paul Civic Center which was about 18,000 people and then had about another 3,000 to 4,000 next door in the old St Paul Auditorium watching it on a movie style screen…Business was great; they had so many names…This was before Vince had moved into AWA territory; Andre the Giant was there, Otto Wantz from Germany, they had a pretty good relationship with the Giant Baba, guys going back and forth to Japan – Stan Hansen was there.  Business was booming.  I think that also contributed to the fact that as good as business was, Vern was probably a little slow…if you basically have 80% to 90% of market share and market penetration, you’re not really worried about some outsider that’s trying to come and do business in your town…Business was so good that it allow Vince, as strange as it seems, to come in a little bit under the radar in terms of Vern’s thinking.”

On talent working different territories in 1983:  “It was more (that) they would lend their talent to another promotion for maybe one or two rounds of their major cities…(they didn’t really work together) until Pro Wrestling USA came to the forefront in late ‘84 or early ‘85 trying to do something to hopefully stop or slow Vince McMahon’s spread.  That’s when they would do joint TVs.  The funny thing there, and one of the downfalls of Pro Wrestling USA is that even though they were working together on this television, no promoter wanted their talent to get beat by another territory’s talent on national TV.  Pro Wrestling USA was airing on ESPN…Even though they were working together, to this point the owners of the different territories were very territorial.”

On being able to run different angles in different areas:  “As good as Pro Wrestling Illustrated was…by the time those magazines hit the newsstand, what they were reporting on was a couple of months old.  There wasn’t the instantaneous knowledge… Even in those days, mainstream media really didn’t cover wrestling.  If you lived in Chicago and were an AWA fan, all you really saw and knew is what happened in Chicago.  You would have no idea what would have took place in Denver, Salt Lake, or Winnipeg.”

On Verne Gagne’s reaction to McMahon’s push to go national:  “I remember being in some of the discussions where Vince was kind of going through the country like a blitzkrieg…if you’re facing in business what was essentially a hostile takeover attempt by Vince McMahon or the WWF, the first thing you are taught in any business school is you circle your wagons (and) protect your own business.  Being old school and so angered by what Vince was beginning to successfully do, Vern focused in trying to get into Vince’s backyard and let markets like Chicago and Milwaukee be basically second in thought and ripe for takeover.”

On business mistakes Gagne made that ultimately killed the promotion:  “Vern sold the Winnipeg market and Winnipeg television to Wally Karbo, Jack Lanza, and Nick Bockwinkel.  For a number of reasons, they ended up taking that television and giving that market to Vince.  The late Dennis Hilgart, the promoter in Milwaukee, again a lot of it was financial, but he left Vern and he had the contacts and the agreements in Milwaukee and he went with Vince.  It was a lot because Vern didn’t quite understand the corporate premise when you’re facing a hostile takeover that you circle the wagons.  Vern left a lot of flanks exposed.”

On whether Hulk Hogan considered staying with the AWA:  “Hulk did give Vern an opportunity.  He was thinking about staying.  One of the big things that Vince was able to offer was a high percentage of the secondary marketing – the tee shirts and hats and everything else – and Vern didn’t want to do that.  He said ‘without me, you wouldn’t be able to sell anything; I’m not giving you that.’  I remember talking with Hulk and finally I said what’s stopping you?  You’ve got 2 choices:  You’ve got A, or you’ve got B which is 25x what A is.”

MATT RIDDLE FILING CIVIL LAWSUIT AGAINST CANDY CARTWRIGHT IN WAKE OF ALLEGATIONS AGAINST HIM

Daniel Rose, the attorney for WWE Smackdown star Matt Riddle announced today that Riddle has filed a civil lawsuit against independent wrestler Samantha "Candy Cartwright" Tavel.    PWInsider.com has not yet been able to acquire the lawsuit.

As previously reported, Tavel alleges that in May 2018 when both were working for EVOLVE, Riddle allegedly attempted to force her to sleep with him, leading to her performing oral sex instead out of fear after he allegedly grabbed her by the throat.  She alleges this took place in a van with several others sleeping in the van at the time.

In court documents for the now-dropped restraining order (also filed in July), Riddle stated he was in a relationship with Tavel outside of his marriage and that after he broke it off, Tavel has since targeted and harrased him.  He also alleged she timed her accusations for the date of his "WWE" debut (on Smackdown) and alleged that Tavel was removed from a WWE taping at Full Sail University.  Tavel denied the removal in the court documents, stating that she was not at the venue on the night in question.

Tavel continued to post proof of her relationship with Riddle on her social media since her initial allegation.

Rose's statement today reads:

Bullshit, there'll be more statements made, anyone want to bet against me on it? I didn't think so.

UNITED WRESTLING NETWORK DEBUT PPV NOTES

Last night's United Wrestling Network PPV debut was marred by streaming issues for the FITE version, which seemed to get better as the show went on.  We are told by readers who ordered the show on InDemand and other PPV providers that the PPV version did not have similar issues.  UWN President Dave Marquez addressed the issued on Twitter.

The show also ran into timing issues as several of the earlier matches ran long, leading to the Tribe vs. Wolf Zaddies and the UWN TV title bout between Dan Joseph and Levi Shapiro being extremely cut down.  It seemed the tag match competitors had zero idea they were going to a time limit draw when the bell rang.  The NWA Championship match between Nick Aldis and challenger Mike Bennett was obviously on hyperspeed as well as they rushed to make sure they could get through what was planned in the 8-9 minutes they had.   Aldis' main events usually go in the 20-25 minute range, so they were working around what time they were left with.

Aldis commented via Twitter after the PPV went off the air:

Dave Marquez directed the PPV.

Although he was mentioned on the air, NWA President Billy Corgan was not at the PPV.

Joe Galli, Todd Kenley and Alyssa Marino were absolutely excellent on commentary last night.

There were zero injuries coming out of the show.

The backstage interviews were all pre-tapes from earlier in the afternoon.

Several hours before the PPV, there was a power outage in Long Beach, CA, where Thunder Studios is located, which obviously would have been a disaster had that happened when the show was on the air, but thankfully that didn't happen.

Announced for the United Wrestling Network's Primetime Live Episode 2 for Tuesday 9/22:

*NWA Women's Champion Thunder Rosa vs. Priscilla Kelly.

*Eli Drake vs. Watts.

*The Friendship Farm, CWH Heritage Champion Ray Rosas and Karl Fredericks to appear.

TEDDY HART LEGAL UPDATES

Edward “Teddy Hart” Annis, 40, was sentenced to ten days’ imprisonment in Richmond County Jail on 9/10 following a court hearing before the Richmond City Circuit Court, Criminal Division in Virgnia, but was arrested again after being incarcerated.

As PWInsider.com has covered, Annis was arrested after being pulled over by authorities in Richmond on 2/12.   Annis had been charged with possession of a schedule III narcotic and possession with intent to sell or distribute.  During the court hearing on 9/10, it was ruled that there was probable cause in regard to the charges of possession of a schedule III narcotic and possession with intent to sell or distribute.  Those charges will move on to a grand jury and should they decide to bring official charges against Annis after evaluating the evidence against him, Hart would stand trial for those charges.

According to Virginia law, Possession of a Schedule III controlled substance is a Class 1 misdemeanor and can be punished with up to 12 months in jail and a fine up to $2,500. Possession of a Schedule III controlled substance by a prisoner (Va. Code §53.1-203(6)) is a Class 5 felony, punished with up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $2,500.  According to SwangoLaw.com, narcotics that fall under Schedule III in Virginia include anabolic steroids, ketamine, codeine, and hydrocodone.

In a now-deleted YouTube video featuring a phone conversation between Annis and Manic, who he was in a relationship with, Annis stated that after the 2/9 Ring of Honor Free Enterprise event (which he was visiting at in Baltimore), he left Manic at their hotel in Maryland and drove to Virginia to get marijuana.  He stated he was alone as Manic had "hit her head hard" during an angle where she was put through a table on the ROH event.    Annis stated he was pulled over due to an ongoing issue with his license plate not matching the registration for his car, something he claimed had been "taken care of."  Authorities searched his car and found marijuana and steroids.

In the video, Hart stated he had a "prescription" but did not clarify which he has a prescription for.   Steroids would fall under a schedule III description under Virginia law.  In a previous video released by Manic, she had referred to steroids in Hart's car as being the reason for his arrest.   In the deleted video, Annis claimed that authorities had “already” discovered all was OK with his car and that it will be released back to "his company."  Hart stated that he hoped to get the situation cleared up and get back to performing for fans as soon as possible, saying he was born to perform and make others happy.

During the 9/10 hearing, Annis was found guilty of being in possession of a schedule III narcotic.  He was also fined $21 in fines and court costs for not carrying or exhibiting his driver’s license or registration.  He was also fined $61 for failure to use lights with wipers.   Charges of being in possession of marijuana and for improperly mounted license plates were dropped as it was determined there was not sufficient evidence to pursue those charges.

However, court records indicate that Annis’ ten day jail sentence stemmed from a March 4th arrest, where he was taken into custody for violating his house arrest in Virginia.  Annis had been staying at an apartment with Virginia-area wrestler Pork Chop Johnson.  Johnson stated on social media that he removed Hart for his behavior in the apartment.  Hart was also fined $232 in relation to that charge.

Court records also indicate that Hart had been declared a fugitive from justice on 5/4.  Record list him as arrested on that charge on 9/11, one day after he had been processed into Richmond City Jail.  Hart is scheduled for another hearing on 10/13, facing charges of a felony arrest without a warrant.

Annis had also been arrested on 3/26 following a domestic incident with Manic, who later stated the situation had been blown out of proportion and that she did not wish to press charges.  Court records do not reflect anything related to the date, so it appears those charges were indeed dropped.

Hart/Annis was released from his MLW contract in December 2019 after several requests to be cut loose from his deal.  He last wrestled in early February at an independent event in Florida, where he had been residing prior to his first arrest in Virginia.

TONY CAPONE RELAUNCHES NAWA PROMOTION

The North American Wrestling Alliance, a promotion run by Tony Capone in the early 1990s, has announced a relaunch and last night launched a new website at www.nawa-wrestling.com

The promotion originally ran the Westchester County area in New York, securing a TV slot nationally on Sportschannel America in the summer of 1992, utilizing names that included Sean Waltman (as the Lightning Kid), the late Hercules Hernandez, Tommy Dreamer, Taz, The Hater, Johnny Rotten (soon to become Johnny Grunge), S.D. Jones and others, including giving Joey Styles his first ever announcing experience.  In an interesting piece of history, several years later when ECW needed a new production team, Styles remembered the production crew from NAWA - Ron Buffone and Charlie Bruzesse, leading to their long through Extreme Championship Wrestling.  The pair now work for Impact Wrestling while Bruzesse is also a top producer for MLW.

The promotion ran for several months and then later returned on a larger scale in 1999, running the Westchester County Center with Bruno Sammartino, Shane Douglas, Sid Vicious, The Public Enemy and more appearing.

Capone announced the return of the company several weeks ago, officially launching a website last night.  The website lists former WWE and WCW star Paul Roma as the promotion's Chief Operating Officer with Roma's partner in the CT-based Paradise Alley Pro Wrestling school, Mario Mancini as the head of talent relations.  Former ECW star Sal E. Graziano is also listed as working in talent relations.  Robert Champion, who worked with Capone on the earlier incarnations of the NAWA is also back.  Cyndi Snow (aka Bobcat) and longtime independent promoter Lou Reardon are also involved in the management side.

The talent roster listed on the website is highlighted by former WWE developmental talent Danny Inferno as well as number of Northeastern independent talents.  WWE Hall of Famer Bushwhacker Luke Williams has cut a promo for the promotion, so the plan is for him to appear as well.

The promotion is already placing classic content on a YouTube channel and promising a "Jingle Brawl" event for this winter that will stream and feature limited fans live.  The promotion's website also states they will be running regularly in New York City, upstate New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and other cities, including Chicago and Indianapolis, although when that may occur obviously depends on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gerald Brisco Mike Rotunda Let Go From WWE

WWE Producer Mike Rotunda, 62, was among those who were officially released by WWE as part of today's cutbacks.

Rotunda, the father of WWE stars Bray Wyatt and Bo Dallas, had been with WWE in a Producer/Agent role since 2006. he was Forloughed back in April and now they decided to just go all the way and fire him.

Rotunda retired from in-ring performances in 2004.  He is perhaps best known as former WWF Tag Team Champion Irwin R. Shyster (IRS) and had a long career in the WWF, WCW, Jim Crockett Promotions, the AWA and Championship Wrestling from Florida, including a memorable run as one of the core members of Kevin Sullivan's Varsity Club in the late 1980s for JCP where he held the NWA World Television Championship.

Beyond his IRS Tag Team title run with Ted DiBiase, he and Barry Windham held the WWF Tag Team Championships twice as the U.S. Express.

WWE Hall of Famer Gerald Brisco was cut by WWE last night.

Brisco had been scouting talent for WWE of late and had been with the company since 1984, when he and his brother Jack sold their shares of Georgia Championship Wrestling to Vince McMahon in a clandestine meeting in LaGuardia Airport, giving Vince McMahon that promotion's TBS timeslot.  Over the years, Brisco worked as an agent and had been one of McMahon's closest confidantes.

Can we say "DDUUHH, DIPSHIT"!

Redemption: Nick Aldis vs Mike Bennett | NWA Ten Pounds of Gold 62

One week away from Prime Time Live on FITE.tv and InDemand pay-per-view, the acclaimed series Ten Pounds of Gold returns to take an in-depth look at the journeys of the champion, Nick Aldis, and the challenger, Mike Bennett.

Bennett re-emerged on the scene with an impassioned message to Aldis delivered via social media, where he said that he was "fighting for his life." Now, he elaborates on that statement with the most candid and raw description of his struggles he has ever given; addiction, failure, disappointment and the desire to make his family proud have fueled Mike Bennett to be in the best condition of his life and extremely well-prepared for this showdown for the most prestigious prize in Professional Wrestling, the NWA World's Heavyweight Championship. Only one thing stands between him and his quest for redemption; the greatest World's Champion of the modern era.

Marty Jannetty Is Full Of Shit When He Says His Murder Confession Was Part Of A Wrestling Angle

Since nobody else, no other wrestling writer anywhere will do it.. I'LL DO IT. I call bullshit on Marty's claim this was part of a wrestling angle. I'll go as far as to say, he's a fucking liar..

There, I said it. Meltzer won't, Scherer won't. Keller won't.. WrestlingInc won't. Pro Wrestling.net won't, I can go on and on.. So I'll do it for them.

The obvious questions arise and I bet Marty won't answer them.. He'll just do his favorite dance, the side step, and avoid answering these. But here goes.. Got the balls to answer these questions Marty? We all know, you don't.

What's the name of the company that this was a 'wrestling angle' for? Where was this, ahem, 'match' gonna take place? Who's the name of the booker who thought this was a great idea?

The silence of Marty Jennetty when it comes to answering those questions? Will begin... Now. :)

Here's the story on his lie, er... 'Claim'.

Former WWE Intercontinental Champion Marty Jannetty is backing away from claims that he murdered a man in 1973 at the age of 13.

As we've noted, Jannetty took to Facebook back on August 5 and claimed he murdered a man when he was just 13. The story brought on mainstream media attention for Jannetty, and a preliminary investigation by the Columbus, Georgia Police Department.

For those who missed it, Jannetty posted about how he allegedly murdered a gay man who tried to sexually assault him behind a Victory Lanes bowling alley where they both worked. He said he had been buying marijuana from the man, as other teenagers did in the area. Jannetty also indicated that he got rid of the body by dumping it in the Chattahoochee River. Jannetty later said during an interview with Boston Wrestling that at the time of the incident he was not aware that the man also "lured" children so he could assault them. Jannetty said the man fondled him while they were in his car, and when Jannetty tried to get out of the car, the man got angry. Jannetty said he was pulled out of the car into an alley, where the man pulled his pants down. Jannetty said he was able to grab a brick and hit the man before he could be anally sexually assaulted. Jannetty also told Boston Wrestling that he doesn't think the man deserved to die, but he did deserve "to get his ass beaten." He also said he didn't mean for the man to die. It was also said that Jannetty was badly affected by the trauma of nearly being raped, killing someone, throwing their body in a river, and then "finding out on the news the dude's missing."

In an update, Jannetty took to Facebook today and claimed the murder story was part of a pro wrestling storyline. Jannetty now says he never murdered a man, and that the story was supposed to play out for some indie promotion, in a storyline involving his friend Darren Kelly, who was a corrections officer and part-time wrestler. Jannetty also detailed how there was at least some truth in the original story, in that he purchased marijuana from a gay man who he worked with at the bowling alley.

Here's the link to his post (if he doesn't run like a bitch and delete that too). https://www.facebook.com/1martyjannetty/posts/10220608121527309

WWE RAW Reportedly Falling Apart Without Paul Heyman Leading The RAW Creative Team

Vince is really THIS LAZY now? WWOOW.. Shows how much he really cares about his product, and a good reason for why it sucks.

WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon reportedly didn't even look at the script for tonight's Labor Day edition of RAW "until this morning," according to a new report from Gary Cassidy of Sportskeeda. Ringside News First reported the news. This is apparently why WWE didn't announce any RAW matches until 70 minutes until showtime on the USA Network - Keith Lee vs. Randy Orton, Murphy vs. Dominik Mysterio, and Aleister Black vs. Kevin Owens in RAW Underground.

It was noted that tonight's RAW apparently hadn't been thought about until today, when Vince checked out the show as he got on the WWE corporate jet to fly to the Amway Center in Orlando. It was noted that WWE talents were pitched on Sunday night under the provision of McMahon having not read the show just yet.

There's said to be a creative force driving the writing and booking of SmackDown right now, while there's a lack in the creative department for the red brand. The source noted that the two names spearheading the RAW writing team are "not up to the task of getting the show done in time" right now, or "getting input from talent" in a timely manner.

It was also said that the RAW brand has been falling apart since Paul Heyman was dismissed from his creative job as RAW Executive Director, one year after being appointed to the job. "RAW has really fallen apart without [Paul] Heyman driving the creative," a source reportedly commented to Sportskeeda, which is interesting as Heyman's removal from the role was apparently done in an effort to streamline the creative writing process for TV as both main roster teams were consolidated.

Arron Stevens (Formerly Damian Sandow in WWE) New Booker For Championship Wrestling From Hollywood

Championship Wrestling from Hollywood returned to TV with new, original in-ring content this past weekend, airing nationally on YouToo America (YTA) as well as the Z Channel and other markets via local syndication.

The episodes were taped in an empty arena format and were the first episodes under new booker Aron Stevens aka the former Damian Sandow in WWE.

The episode was more of a traditional, episodic style format with storyline vignettes and outside of the ring interviews conducted by Jon Roberts helping to move storylines forward.  Previously, CWH had been a series of bouts and some interviews leading to those matches but episodically, there wasn't as much of a strong narrative from week to week and this reboot of sorts appeared to change that old formula up somewhat.

The main story of the episode ran across the hour, seeing Ray Rosas upset Watts (Erik Watts, who competed on Tough Enough years ago) to win the Hollywood Heritage Championship, hitting the ring after Watts offered an open challenge to anyone in the back, running past Anthony Idol (very underrated 80s style promos) to steal the match.  Watts was so stunned by the lost he threw a temper tantrum, throwing things around as he exited the building.

The storyline of the res tof the show was that Rosas' partners in Static (UWN Tag Team Champions Adrian Quest & Uptown Andy Brown) weren't happy that he was thinking of himself over the trio.  Rosas is also the Arizona State Champion and won the promotion's Percy Pringle Memorial Cup earlier this year.  All of this led to the announced main event, which saw Static in six man tag team match against the team of Clark Connors & Danny Rivera & Will Allday.  Allday is a Booker T student from Texas who will be getting featured on the UWN Primetime Live and he scored the pin over Rosas.  Connors has been working for New Japan's recent California-based TV.    In the end, Static turned on Rosa, beating him down and laying him out over his title belts, leaving the episode on a cliffhanger angle.

United TV Champion Dan Joseph (who had been co-hosting the promotion's Best of episodes of late) defended his title, showing some nice babyface energy in defeating EJ Sparks.  Sparks, billed as "Phoenix's favorite son" has been putting in the work during the pandemic and looked to be in tremendous shape.   He's certainly on the rise based on matches I've seen of him of late.  This bout was the longest thing on the episode and was easily the best match bell to bell on the return episode.  They worked a methodical style early, laid out with an old school build before going to submissions and stiff shots.  Both looked very good here.

Papo Esco debuted, playing a 80s monster heel, winning a squash over Frankie Frank.  Esco billed himself a "King Fat Boy."  The Friendship Farm, featuring Jervis Cottonbelly and Sweet Robby Shaw, also won a quick match.    Cottonbelly is billed as the World's Sweetest Man.

There was also a segment where CWH owner Dave Marquez got into it with his "son", matchmaker Niko Marquez with Niko pretty much playing the role of a delusional moron with inferences about how people were wearing masks and that it was ridiculous while also complaining about the usage of women in the promotion.  This led to Halston Boddy stepping up confront Niko to tease something down the line there.  Dave Marquez is tremendous as a ham on camera playing the Lance Russell role of being an interview exasperated at the ridiculous comments.

The UWN Primetime Live PPV debut was pushed heavily on the show.

Scheduled for this weekend's CWH TV:

*CWH Hollywood Heritage Champion Ray Rosas vs. Will Allday, playing off Allday pinning him this week.

*Danny "Limelight" Rivera vs. Boogie Slice with the idea it's a NYC battle of Brooklyn vs. Queens.

*Vipress vs. Cece Channel.

*Clark Connors is in singles action.

*4 Minutes of Heat vs. Friendship Farm.

Take That McMahon, As Paige Says "There's No Chance In Hell" She's Getting Rid Of Her Twitch Channel

During her stream yesterday, Paige spoke about making some changes to her Twitch account as word came down WWE wanting its talent to stop using third party formats, like Twitch and Cameo. Paige has already changed her Twitch channel name from "OfficialPaigeWWE" to "SarayaOfficial" and noted on her stream she'll be changing up her graphics to comply.

"Just so you guys know, this is all going to be changed," Paige said about the WWE related graphics behind her. "It's gonna be changed to Saraya — my real name. We are not going to get rid of our Twitch, we are here to stay. We are not going anywhere. Twitch is our house. I'm the queen of Twitch, so there is no chance in hell we are getting rid of my stream. We're here. We're here to stay. No, guys, I can keep it. It's just Saraya, just have to change it all over to Saraya. ... Thank you guys for understanding. I know it's going to be a little bit weird to get used to Saraya, but it is what it is."

WWE issued a statement about third party bookings.

"Much like Disney and Warner Bros., WWE creates, promotes and invests in its intellectual property, i.e. the stage names of performers like The Fiend Bray Wyatt, Roman Reigns, Big E and Braun Strowman," WWE wrote in a statement. "It is the control and exploitation of these characters that allows WWE to drive revenue, which in turn enables the company to compensate performers at the highest levels in the sports entertainment industry. Notwithstanding the contractual language, it is imperative for the success of our company to protect our greatest assets and establish partnerships with third parties on a companywide basis, rather than at the individual level, which as a result will provide more value for all involved."

It was reported by that WWE Senior Director of Talent Relations Mark Carrano told talent the company owns the rights to their real names. If that were the case, a simple name change wouldn't be enough to allow talent to continue their deals. The report noted it wouldn't make much sense for WWE to own someone's real name, but the wording in their contracts might prevent them "from marketing themselves on platforms the company doesn't want while still under a WWE deal."
