Christian Says AEW Should "Focus On Themselves" And Not Worry About WWE Like TNA Did

Christian spoke with TV Insider about All Elite Wrestling, his show with Edge on the WWENetwork, and the finals months of his WWE in-ring career. Below are highlights from the interview:

Thoughts on All Elite Wrestling:

"I think that they need to focus on themselves. I think the knock TNA had is they seemed to worry too much about what WWE was doing instead of focusing on their own. That would be the way to go, in my opinion. As far as new signing Chris Jericho goes, he is obviously one of the biggest names in the history of the industry. So that is a major feather in their cap right off the bat that they are legit and going to try to make it work. Otherwise, Chris is a professional. He wouldn't have attached himself to it if he didn't think AEW had a bright future."

The Edge & Christian Show on the WWE Network:

"I'm excited to work with all the talent, because many are playing against type of what you're seeing them portray on television on a weekly basis. We try to have a fun environment when there's not the pressure of live television. It's just a very easygoing atmosphere with tons of room to ad-lib and make things your own. We definitely had certain people in mind for different skits. Bray Wyatt, for me, from the first season and second with the midwife skit, which was to me, so funny. Then there was Samoa Joe with the Girl Scout cookies. Even doing throwbacks with the superstars of the past. I think everyone really has delivered, and I'm just really happy with how the season has gone."

Looking back at the end of his in-ring career with WWE:

"For me, I've never been the guy to go out there and say, 'That's it. I'm done.' Honestly, I think what happened is when I got hurt, nobody knew this was going to be the end. It was a bit of a process. It was four or five months down the line when we realized I wasn't coming back from it. So, it's kind of hard to go back after and say, 'Remember five months ago when I was off TV? Well, guess what?' It got to a certain point when it was too hard to go back and do anything. I'm completely fine with my career. I feel like I accomplished everything I ever set out to accomplish. On to the next chapter."

The Young Bucks made a surprise appearance last night at the Defy Wrestling show in Seattle that SCU was performing on. They superkicked several guys and did a Meltzer driver. Moose also showed up as a surprise, beating Jack Cunningham. MLW announcer Rich Bocchini was there, although he was advertised. Artemis Spencer beat Dezmond Xavier to keep the Defy title, Royce Isaacs & Jorel Nelson b The Amerikan Gunz to win the tag title, King Khash won the Defy to Survive ten man, Robbie Eagles b Cody Chhum, and Team Defy of Shane Strickland & Randy Myers & Schaff b Christopher Daniels & Frankie Kazarian & Scorpio Sky. Sonjay Dutt was on the news in both the U.S. and Canada today. He had one of the longest days of his life. He was going to Macau for a show. He was first headed from Newark, NJ on a flight to Hong Kong. Due to a medical emergency on the flight, the plane was diverted and touched down in Goose Bay, Labrador in Eastern Canada. Because they were not supposed to land in Canada, they were not allowed off the plane. Then there was an issue with the plane they were on. They ended up stuck on the ground not able to leave the plane for 19 hours before they got on a new plane, took a bus to the new plane, and flew back to Newark, NJ. Goose Bay officials brought them snacks and water after all the food had run out. It was -32 outside while they were stuck in the plane with the door frozen.

Possible 'Reason' Why The Revival Requested Their WWE Release

After their match with Lucha House Party on Monday night's episode of RAW, The Revival, Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder asked for their release from WWE management, according to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio. While The Revival requested their release, Meltzer added in the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the release has not been granted yet. He noted that no releases are being granted to anyone asking for them "for obvious reasons."

Pro Wrestling Sheet is now reporting the reason for the request is not just based on their booking, but the booking of the entire tag division. The report says lack of direction, promos, and attention has become a point of frustration for Dash and Dawson.

Apparently, that frustration boiled over on Monday when their match against WWE RAW Tag Team Champions Bobby Roode and Chad Gable wasn't featured on the show. Gallows and Anderson (who were initially considered major signings) and Authors of Pain are being looked at as other examples of notable teams not getting much TV time.

The Revival have been on the main roster since April 2017 and have yet to hold any WWE Championship gold. In comparison, the duo saw much more success in NXT, where they are two-time NXT Tag Team Champions, and won Year-End Awards for Tag Team of the Year and Match of the Year for their match against Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa in a 2-out-of-3 falls match for the NXT Tag Team Championship at NXT TakeOver: Toronto.

The report also noted both sides have talked since Monday, but it's not clear if anything was resolved. Dash and Dawson also have a "decent amount of time" left on their contracts, meaning they may have to sit out awhile if WWE simply sends them home.

Kylie Rae Talks AJ Styles Helping Her Get A WWE Tryout, Training With Booker T

Kylie Ray spoke with Women's Wrestling Weekly about AJ Styles being impressed with her in-ring work, going to a WWE tryout, winning the AAW Women's Championship, and training with Booker T. Here are some of the highlights:

Winning the AAW Women's Championship:

"I'm still speechless. I had no idea, honestly. And when it happened, it was everything I ever dreamed of pretty much because I grew up in Chicago. AAW is—I think—the longest running company in Chicago. So I grew up a fan of it and then they didn't even have a women's division until last year. And then they crowned a women's champion and then that's a goal you strive for … it's one day being women's champion. And it finally happened."

Training at Booker T's School:

"I've always been a fan of Booker T, so when I first moved to Texas, I never thought that I would be able to be at his school. I was still training up in Chicago a little bit, but I was like, 'Oh my God, this is like the end all be all of training faculties.' They only accept certain people who are in the best shape and the best wrestlers. So when I had my first meeting there, I was extremely overwhelmed and nervous, I was shaking. Your first day they put you through the ringer to see what you are able to withstand. Where you conditioning is, where your head is at, how advanced you are in your training. So, I guess I passed the test because I was there training with them the next day. It was just cool to see Booker T teaching you.

"You have this form of respect for him, unlike anything I felt for a trainer before because he has been where you want to be in wrestling. At least where I want to be in wrestling. WWE is hopefully, one day, my goal and one day I would love to be there. And he knows exactly what they are looking for and he runs his training facility pretty much how the [WWE] Performance Center is run and you can't ask for better training than that. He looks for things that not many other trainers are able to look for."

Going to a WWE tryout:

"Leading up to it, just like the pressure and mostly the fear of the unknown because you always hear about the tryouts and you can watch them online. But you don't you realize how hard it is till you get there and there is really no way to prepare for it. So you can do all the conditioning you want. But you are there pretty much for three days from 8 am to 5 pm. What they don't teach you about is how sore you're going to be and how to deal with that soreness."

AJ Styles helping her get a WWE tryout:

"I would love to wrestle him. I feel like he is a big reason why I got my tryout to begin with. I had done extra work a couple of months before the tryout and after my practice match when we were there, he had pulled me aside and basically told me 'Keep doing what you are doing. You are on the right track.' I was so starstruck and crying in his face. And I think he had gone up to management basically [and said], 'I don't know what she has to do, I don't know what the process is to get a tryout, but she needs a tryout.'"

WWE Superstar Reportedly Warns Two Top Free Agents About Signing With The Company

Top lucha indie star Rush recently signed with Ring of Honor and was reportedly warned about going to WWE by a current SmackDown Superstar, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Rush is very close friends with Andrade, who pretty much warned Rush and lucha star Dragon Lee about going to WWE. It's believed that Lee will sign a deal similar to Rush's deal soon

The Observer notes that Andrade's advice to Rush was that "WWE wasn't what it was cracked up to" be. Andrade signed with WWE in 2015 and won the WWE NXT Title in late 2017. He's been stuck on the midcard since getting called up to the main roster in April 2018,

Damien Sandow On The Moment He Knew He Was Leaving WWE, Origin Of Name, Early Days In FCW

Origin of the Damien Sandow name:
"I was Idol Stevens down there (FCW) and then they said okay you've got to come up with a new name. So I'm thinking and I've got a bunch of names down and one of which was Sandow. It's based off of Billy Sandow who was in the "Gold Dust Trio" (the promoters back from the turn of the century), so Sandow {whatever} and for Damien, I'll be really honest with you and it is funny because a lot of guys who would get reassigned names would be like that name is awful and they would complain about it but I was like the person makes the name and the name does not make the person. I always kind of took that and years ago if you told me Damien Sandow that is the stupidest name I've ever heard, which is still may be to some people and that is fine. But to me and to a lot of people when you hear Damien Sandow you think "Intellectual Savior", the robe, the mic and it was kind of a description of the character. I like it but I do not recall where the name Damien came from."

Early critics of his character and first days on the WWE roster:
"There was one guy who is no longer there and this not a shot at anyone that is currently in the administration and I don't know who is there anymore administratively but the guy who was kind of the bridge between WWE and FCW came down and looked me in the eye and said; "You're too bland". I remember Dusty just laughing at him and asking do you even know what was going on and do you even watch the show? I thought he was joking with me because I was getting reactions at the show that were very good and I got with Dusty and he said if they think you are bland keep the tights look, get the robe and look like Lou Thesz but we'll make a presentation out of it and have an old school look coming to the ring and from there you dis-robe and have the pink tights and just be ridiculous. It kind of started evolving and I didn't know I was going to be a "smart guy" until probably the second day I was there and called up to WWE. That is where I heard that I was going to be the "Intellectual Savior" so I thought well okay I am going to have to expand my vocabulary and start acting smart."

Moment he knew it was time to leave WWE and did he anticipate his release:
"I had told them that I was. They said we will see what we can do and they never got back to me and just did it with everyone else. Which is fine. Thank you for the extra two weeks. On the inside there is the (WWE) World Title thing and everything but to me my come to Jesus moment (as we say in the South) it was WrestleMania at the Battle Royal. When Miz and I did our thing and I was about to turn on him and everyone knew I was about to turn on him and the way the arena built up, I just took a couple of seconds and looked around to say wow. This is not because anyone wanted this to happen and this reaction of these 80,000 people are having this reaction because they genuinely want to. There are guys that they have tried to push and push and shove down their throats and I don't think they can ever say that. Have they had more titles? Of course. "

"That was all I needed. It kind of shifted something inside me to where (and I don't want this to come out wrong) but it was like I don't need to look for justification from anyone anymore. I was given the stage to perform on and I am so grateful that the WWE in particular gave me that as well as anyone who has ever employed me did, however that was like it for me. That was just like there is more to life than this. For the first time I didn't care about winning a World Championship or being a "top guy". That just kind of cemented everything I had worked for and I was okay on the inside and when you are okay on the inside you don't need some piece of leather and tin to justify that."

PWInsider Gets Fact Checked Again (They Obviously Don't Remember What They Report)

Two people, one on Twitter and another on FB sent me info on this, and remembered that I covered it right here on this site. Mike Johnson at PWInsider claims in his "MLW News" post that Shane Strickland may be WWE bound. BUT.. As I and others, INCLUDING PWInsider (I believe) reported before, Strickland said himself that he's a free agent again.

Since proof is always, a mother fucker, and I'm a mother fucker who always seems to have proof. Let's go ahead and show that proof, shall we?

Gail Kim On Which Former TNA Star Wants To Return To Wrestling, WWE Signing All Available Talent

Current producer for Impact Wrestling and former WWE star Gail Kim took on a media call this week. During the call, she revealed that Taryn Terrell wants to make a return to wrestling. Kim also went in depth on the demanding WWE schedule, the women she would like to sign to the Knockout's Division before they get "scooped up" by WWE, and whether she thinks the Knockouts Tag Team Titles would benefit the current Knockouts division.

Former Impact Knockout, Taryn Terrell last competed in a match on August 20, 2017 when she teamed with Sienna & Taya Valkyrie to defeat Kim, Allie, & Rosemary in a six-woman tag team match. It was announced that Terrell had departed from Impact Wrestling on October 20, 2017 but Kim revealed that Terrell wants to make a return to the squared circle.

"She is not wrestling, she is doing stunt work but I know she wants to come back to wrestling," Kim stated. "She does miss it, just like everyone else that enters this business, I think. I always tell everyone wrestling is like the mafia, once you get in, you can't get out."

Kim has been scouting out talent to potentially join the Knockouts Division, however, she expressed how frustrated she is with WWE as they continue collecting talent and leaving the "slim pickings" for everyone else. Kim hopes to find the gems among what remains and add more talented international girls to the Knockouts Division.

"There's a couple of girls, I guess, but I almost don't want to say it because WWE signs everyone - is snatching up everyone, and making slim pickings for everyone," Kim explained. "I just heard that Viper just got signed. I don't know if that's a rumor or not, I don't know if it's been made in an announcement, but I loved Viper in the UK. There's a girl named Shotzi Blackheart here in the indies that we used once, but then she got injured straight after that. I see a lot of potential in her. There's a girl in Mexico, Keira, that I really like.

"Like I said, it seems like now everyone is kinda getting scooped up and I just want more of a pool to pick from," Kim continued. "If there are good girls internationally, let me know. I think all the Japanese girls are pretty much taken, it seems like."

With WWE's introduction of the Women's Tag Team Championships, Kim explained how there's been an influx of people asking for the return of the Knockouts Tag Team Championships. Kim sees potential for the Championships to return somewhere down the line but thinks they need to reinforce the division with plenty more Knockouts before Knockouts Tag Team Championships return.

"At the moment, the state of the Knockouts, I feel like they don't necessarily need the tag team titles right now because the story is interesting enough," Kim said. "But I have seen a lot more tweets about that since WWE has introduced the tag team titles to their women's division, but they do have a lot more girls than us, so i think that if we added some more girls, I think that could maybe be a discussion that could come up."

Kim saw quick success in WWE, winning her very first televised match, a seven-woman battle royal, on the June 30, 2003 episode of RAW to become the WWE Women's Champion. On August 5, 2011, Kim announced over Twitter that she had quit WWE but was forced to stay with the company until her contract officially expired on September 30 of the same year. Kim thinks that experiencing WWE is something that every wrestler should try once in their career, especially athletes starting out in the business, or those in the prime of their career who can handle the demanding expectations.

"Despite my experiences there, I always tell every wrestler, you need to experience it if you have not," Kim said. "You do have to give your life to them. They literally want you to eat, breath, sleep it, so I think it's great for people who are entering the business and maybe in the prime of their career. But I always try to remind people who have been there a long time that I still speak to, that sometimes, they forget there's a real world out there. Because you live in this bubble and you're constantly on the road, and when you come home you're so exhausted and you have to get your errands done in a day, and then you're back on the road, so it's very hard. I give it to them for sticking to that schedule."

Maria Kanellis Fact Checks The Marks And Other News Sites Over False Reporting

Maria Kanellis took to Twitter today and responded to the report on she and husband Mike Kanellis requesting their WWE releases. The report noted that they asked for their releases a few weeks back as they are not happy with how WWE is using them.

"Everyone thinks they know everything. Hahahahaha.... it's social media not an autobiography," Maria wrote in response to a fan who asked why was she tweeting excitement over being in the WWE 2K19 DLC as she asked to leave the company.

One thing that has surprised me about independent pro wrestling is the amount of quality men and women on the scene. The stars are just waiting to be under the big lights. Obviously there is a great deal of veterans, but I don't want to make the mistake of putting that talent on the forefront versus featuring up-and-coming wrestlers. Fresh is everything and nothing is better than when you have a balance. You add to that one of the greatest wrestlers of all time in Chris Jericho, who continues to reinvent himself -- he's wrestling's David Bowie -- you put him in the same ring with somebody who's fresh and hasn't been seen, it just ups that individual's profile. It's what we call in the business "the rub." That's how I really want to balance it out. I don't want to lean towards one side. You've seen in wrestling, the worst thing you can do is abuse and overuse your legends. You have got to keep it amongst your core contract young and fresh guys

Specific job responsibilities as an Executive VP: "I am the executive vice president of talent, live events and creative. And that is the job I share with Matt and Nick. It's basically an extension of All In. I don't want to hang out in the past, but it is what we did for All In. It's recruiting talent, it's licensing talent, it's coordinating everything from stage design to scaling the MGM Grand Garden, which is what I was doing on my phone right before we started speaking. This is my dream job. I am doing it all currently. Recruiting talent, talking to talent, making deals, underwriting the contracts -- everything that is under the purview of that job and more because we are a startup."

How his approach to creative will be similar or different to Dusty: "My dad was executive producer at WCW and was the booker for Jim Crockett Promotions. I learned so much from being his son. I'll be honest -- I don't like when other people say it, but I can say it -- I learned from the things he did right and I also learned from the things he did wrong, because he had to live with them for a good portion of his career. A lot of it is on the board criticism, but I've seen that and I feel like I know what to stay away from and know which direction to go. One thing we are trying to do here is let guys go out there and play their music like they are going to play it. If I invest in a talent like, let's say MJF [Maxwell Jacob Friedman] for example, it's not my job to micromanage you. My job is to put a spotlight on you. I've seen your set of skills. We looked into you. We recruited you. I'm just using him as an example. Somebody like that, if you are paying them to be on your show, let them go out there and play their own song. Don't give them a new lyric sheet. Don't give them a new instrument. And that's the type of wrestling I grew up on.If we look at the heyday of WWF in the late '80s and the type of wrestling that I love dearly, those were grown men who knew what the direction was, they got a finish, they got a time, and they went out there and delivered what they delivered. It wasn't something that was micromanaged. Maybe slightly consulted or massaged, but they were the stars, so why micromanage them? We will not be micromanaging anybody."

How many revenue streams they are looking to develop: "Unfortunately due to the legality in all of this, I can't speak on the potentiality of a television deal, but I can say we've got Tony and the world that Tony comes from with his business acumen and providing consistent content and what that means for a consumer. I can also speak to the fact that Dana Massie, who is going to be heading up the merchandising arm of All Elite Wrestling, is a frigging genius. She is responsible for Killing The Business [The Young Bucks' merchandising empire]. She is the secret weapon behind that and pretty much, without being dramatic, has changed the independent wrestling scene and I think she knows it. We're looking at all different avenues but we also have a less-is-more approach. We want to match sizzle with substance, so right now we only have Double Or Nothing happening at the MGM Garden Arena on May 25 and in the following months we are going to have the Jacksonville show, with gate money going towards the victims and families and people affected by the recent shootings in Jacksonville at the Madden tournament. That was something Tony felt strongly about.
