Jerry Lawler Cuts Matt Riviera's Perm: USA Championship Wrestling - 7/14/18

After offering 74 year old wrestling legend “Superstar” Bill Dundee $100,000 to retire from pro wrestling at Oman Arena back on July 7th, 2018, “The LVR Boy” Matt Riviera & his manager Boyd Bradford were attacked by the “Superstar”, who then made off with the money. On this edition of USA Championship Wrestling TV, airing Saturday night’s at 10:30pm on WBBJ Channel 7 out of Jackson, TN, Matt Riviera came out to confront Dundee. This led to the surprise appearance by WWE Hall of Fame member Jerry “The King” Lawler, who went on to attack Matt Riviera and, along with Dundee, proceeded to cut the prized perm of “The LVR Boy”. Later in the show, Riviera came back out to challenge Lawler next week on USA Championship Wrestling TV.

Funeral for The Late Mr. Saito

Masa Saito's funeral took place today in Tokyo. The pall bearers, all wrestlers, were Riki Choshu, Tiger Hattori, Kensuke Sasaki, Katsuhiko Nakajima, Masa Kitamiya, Great Kabuki, Killer Khan, Motoyuki Kitazawa (who faced Saito in his first pro match in 1965), Keiji Muto, Masahiro Chono and Akira Maeda.

Matt Taven: MSG Show Is A 'Big Pat On The Back' For Ring Of Honor

Matt Taven spoke with Hollywood Life on Ring of Honor's show at Madison Square Garden, and wrestling having a true "Worlds Champion." Here are some of the highlights:

ROH heading to Madison Square Garden in April:

"I mean being a Boston guy, we have always dominated New York for years so every time we go to New York, I feel I am the reason for the sell out or in the main event or get the biggest reaction in the crowd. So I have been the King of New York and probably the world for a while now. But, as far as Ring of Honor going into Madison Square Garden, to be a guy who personally – who, now doing the math – has been here for six years, which is crazy to think about. Even in my first dark match in 2009, the amount of time that I have been around this country and seen the growth. To see us go into that building is a big pat on the back. It is a big accomplishment and, for me personally, I have been with this company in its biggest years of growth. For me it is one of those notches on the belt and a source of pride.

"It shows we are doing the right thing. It is catching on. I don't think I get the credit I deserve obviously but I like to see the fruits of my labor go into things like getting into Madison Square Garden. As far as I am concerned for a match, it should be me defending the Ring Of Honor World Championship against whatever Melvin that wants to get slapped around in front of the biggest audience in Ring Of Honor history. But, that is almost so far down the road that I haven't thought of it too much. I am very proud of what we have accomplished as a company and to be one of the cornerstones of Ring Of Honor, especially in the last five years. It really lets you know tat you are doing the right thing and all your hard work is going into the right direction and it is starting to pay off. The more people we can get to see this product, the more we will make fans so its a great pat on the back for all the hard work that has been put on this company in the last few years."

What he'd like to see more of in pro wrestling:

"Just like in Hollywood, everything has been done. And it is like, 'what is old is new again' and so it is hard to pinpoint something that hasn't been done in wrestling. But we are getting to a point were we have really shrunk the globe and this bubble. I think something that needs to be done and I know WWE is global, but an actual World Champion, a Worlds Champion that defends his belt in New Japan or Ring Of Honor or CMLL and then go to Australia. And that does kind of happen in a sense, but it is not like the New Japan Championship is considered the ROH Championship. And vice versa. So to see someone defend a title in Tokyo on a Saturday and then Friday back in New York and then the next night in Mexico City. And that sounds like an absolute nightmare for travel wise and what to do to your body. But that is the only thing that can be done that hasn't been done before. I am trying to rack my brain for something else, but I am literally coming up with ways to make wrestlers lives even tougher so I should stop now. [Laughs]".

FLIP GORDON LOSES NWA TITLE MATCH AT ROH HONOR FOR ALL

While there were some developments, the storyline of Flip Gordon trying to get booked for All In wasn't settled at ROH Honor for All.

Gordon unsuccessfully challenged for Nick Aldis' NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship at Friday night's show in Nashville, Tennessee. But the story of the match was Gordon seemingly earning Cody Rhodes' respect.

There was an angle where the match was restarted at one point. Aldis got the pin after hitting a piledriver and elbow drop, but Gordon's foot was on the rope. Cody was on commentary and joined the referees who were discussing the finish, pointing out that the pin shouldn't have been counted. Gordon got a near fall with the Star Spangled Stunner but ended up passing out in a cloverleaf.

Both Aldis and Cody showed respect to Gordon after the match. Cody (who wasn't mic'd) spoke to Gordon in the ring and raised his hand. Bully Ray then attacked Gordon after Cody left, continuing the feud they've been having in ROH.

Cody is set to challenge for the NWA title at All In on September 1 at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. The only other match that's been announced at this point is Kazuchika Okada vs. Marty Scurll.

"It's completely different. I've said this before and Scott (D'Amore) says of all the things that I've said to be an ambassador that the one thing that stands out is the fact that I am actually there in IMPACT Wrestling. That should tell everybody that place is completely different. I would not be back there if there was anything remaining of the old mind-set of how that place was run. The talent was never the question it was the game plan and how they went about executing for me is how they were going to be held back and from the time that discussions started with Sonjay and with Scott and with Don it was for me about how they want to run the business."

"Wrestling is in a unique time and the way that we structure our relationships with talent and promotions which has been primarily dictated by one person's train of thought doesn't have to be the only way that wrestling is done. In my opinion nobody owns the patent on the art form of professional wrestling and the way it does its business. There is an opportunity now to do business differently with talent and from the promotion because the landscape is different. When I started to talk to them and got their philosophies and to kind of tell them my philosophies of how I think a successful promotion can be run, a lot of things started lining up and you are seeing they're executing it and they are really letting guys be independent contractors and having some freedoms in allowing them to keep their intellectual properties and trying to work with promotions and trying to extend the olive branch to different promotions and be kind of a hopper that some of the local promotions can get some notoriety in just working the partnership. So it is a cool thing and it is creating some unpredictability which we haven't had in wrestling for a while and for a guy like me to show up randomly at Ring of Honor or have two different title matches on two different television shows for two different promotions in the same week is stuff that hasn't really happened."

"You've got the Jericho cruise now and you will have Ring of Honor there and IMPACT Wrestling there and obviously you have the Lucha Underground connection and there is just so many things going on right now that are so unpredictable and it just makes it really exciting."

Eddie Edwards On Struggles With Hardcore Wrestling In 2018, How Slammiversary Is Different This Year

Wrestling Inc. founder Raj Giri recently spoke to Eddie Edwards ahead of Slammiversary where he is booked to face Tommy Dreamer in a House Of Hardcore Match. Their rivalry is a highlight of the 14th Slammiversary event. Edwards has seen plenty of changes in Impact Wrestling since his 2014 debut and spoke about how this year's Slammiversary event is a fresh start.

"You know it's kinda a new era, a new era for Impact Wrestling right now. So every time we have a pay-per-view it's like a fresh start for the company, for the product going forward. This is also Slammiversary with the new ownership and everything so in that sense, it truly is a fresh start for the product. It's the biggest pay-per-view of the year so it's time to put up or shut up and go out there and deliver, you know?"

Edwards spoke of the new Impact Wrestling regimen as being on the same page. They are looking to better Impact Wrestling and distance themselves from the preconceived notions about the previous product. They know it won't happen all at once, but there is a dedication to move forward and put out the best pro wrestling product possible.

"It's very comfortable to know everybody from the boys to the office to the production -- everybody in the back, we're all on the same page. To be able to know that and not second-guess anything that's going on or question anything that's going on. To know everybody has that same goal to make Impact Wrestling the best Impact Wrestling that we can. You know one day at a time.

"We know we're not gonna save the world in an hour in the day. It's gonna take time, but it's one step forward each and every day and that's our goal to know that everybody is on that same page. That's definitely a good thing."

Edwards has Dreamer to look forward to this Sunday in Toronto. Edwards opened up about working with The Innovator Of Violence. He might play it up like he despises Dreamer on Impact Wrestling, but Edwards still holds a ton of respect for the ECW Original.

"Obviously he's an innovator. He's one of the hardcore icons and legends. You know just the other day my brother was texting me saying how cool it is to be able to do something like this with Tommy who I was a huge fan of before I got into wrestling. He's someone I watched and obviously somebody that I listened to and I tried to learn from him.

"To be able to go out there in a match like this in a big pay-per-view like this and go out there in a match like this. A House Of Hardcore Match, he is the original ECW. So to be able to go out there and put this violence out there and see what we can make with what we have I think it's a unique opportunity to be able to go out there with a guy that I respect so much.

"We're gonna go out there and basically leave it all out there because these types of matches you have to feel that way going in. That's something I'm comfortable with going out there. I know it's gonna hurt. I know I'm gonna be beaten and battered but, that's fine with me. Because we're just going out there to create something memorable and create a great atmosphere."

Edwards is coming off of an intense feud with Sami Callihan. The former TNA World Heavyweight Champion was left with a faceful of broken bones thanks to the infamous spot where Callihan whacked him in the face with a baseball bat. He discussed the idea of hardcore wrestling and if it is difficult to perform in today's modern era. Fans have seen a lot at this point and could be considered jaded. Edwards knows the story he and Dreamer need to tell and that should make all the difference.

"It depends on how you look at it," Edwards said. "We have that emotion going into it, you know? That's a story we can use and we can build on and the whole thing.

"You know it's not just about going out there and doing crazy things and you know getting these 'holy bleep' chants, no. It's about this story, it's about doing these things in that story and making it something people can relate to. You know, everybody's been pissed off. Everybody's been angry. Everybody's been wronged by someone.

"They are gonna feel and understand, 'okay I can understand why he hit this guy with object X, Y, Z,' you know what I mean. There's things people want to do in their everyday life that we're gonna be able to do on Sunday. Things they've always wanted to do. They've always wanted to hit their boss with a kendo stick or hit somebody who screwed them over with a trash can. That's what we're gonna be doing on Sunday."

Booker T Says An In-Ring Return Match Would Not Be For WWE

As an on-screen personality in a non-wrestling role, Booker T is able to be part of the business while remaining retired. Although Booker announced he was hanging up his boots in July 2016, he has not closed the door an a ring return.

The Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast recently had the five-time World Champion as a guest where he addressed the idea of stepping back in the ring for competition. Booker T said you can't say anything definite in pro wrestling. He is still in great shape and can workout alongside his students at the Reality Of Wrestling school. This is also where people should expect to see him if he does perform again.

"My thing is this, I went into the Hall of Fame in 2013. A lot of people who enter the Hall of Fame it becomes the end for them. Retirement is their only steps, but my thing is this you never say never. Especially for a fighter.

"You never know when that last match is. We all like to say that we have one more match in us. My thing is that I am in good shape. I am in never going to be 100% in tip-top shape like when I was twenty-five or something like that. I think for my age I think I am doing pretty good. I can do more pushups than any of my students in my school. I can do more pull-ups than any of my students as well. So I say, why not go have one more match when I can still do this?

"There will come a time when I won't be able to do this, so why not do it while I still can? I say, go out there and have some fun. Let's get something straight though, I don't want anyone to think about me coming back for a SummerSlam or a WrestleMania. If I do come back, it is going to be at Reality of Wrestling. It'll be against one of my students just to show them what it is that I teach them so that they can go out there and get things taught from the right perspective."

Booker T discussed the idea of being content with his life. He reflected on the champions he's been fortunate enough to face and realizes the cool moments he's been a part of. As he continues to push his own limits, Booker T says he is living in the present while remembering all he's accomplished. He might have another match left in him, but Booker is still happy where he is at this stage in his career.

"I have been able to face champions like 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair to the current champion, AJ Styles. I don't know too many people that can say something like that. That is an awesome stat. For me to be a part of that, and my name to be part of it is pretty cool, but not to leave off that I may have one more match left in me.

"My thing is that I am happy and I am content where I am at right now. People ask me all the time whether I miss it, and I say, no. I don't miss it because I got to do everything that I wanted to do in pro wrestling, but I look at myself now and say, hey, why not push the limit to see where I can go? I tried out for the American Gladiators way back in the day.

"I fell out in the first round. I had to do 50 pushups with my fingerprints but that wasn't something that I was prepared for. I don't ever look back and say that I didn't try. I always tell my younger students that you don't ever want to have any regrets in life. You can't go back in time or anything like that. I am living in the present."

Tommy Dreamer On What Item Shouldn't Be Used In Hardcore Matches

Tommy Dreamer will celebrate his 30th anniversary in the pro wrestling business in ten short months. He was a part of ECW since the birth of the extreme movement and is now using everything he learned through his career to lead the House Of Hardcore today.

"People think about blood, or tables, or chairs but to me, hardcore is a work ethic," Dreamer explained during a recent media call. He is set to battle Eddie Edwards at Slammiversary on July 22nd in a House Of Hardcore Rules Match where anything will be legal.

I asked The Innovator Of Violence what the line of danger should be in a hardcore wrestling match. Dreamer admitted he would be a hypocrite if he said someone has gone too far. Living in the age we do, plenty of things have changed since the days of the original ECW. Dreamer discussed how medical testing should be a part of preparing for any match to really ensure the safety of everyone involved.

"I would be a hypocrite to say, 'oh you can go too far.' Cause I was the guy who would walk into a building and go, 'I'm either gonna get thrown off that or I'm gonna throw somebody off of that.'

"But we've learned different things. Chair shots to the head should never happen in professional wrestling again. No one should be having hardcore matches unless the other person that you know has a blood test. You know what I love about wrestling in Louisiana? They have a blood test. If there's going to be a commission, you should have a blood test. Because guys are bleeding."

He then discussed some weaponry that should never be used in a pro wrestling match. Glass light tubes shouldn't be broken over anyone's head, but it happens all the time on the modern-day battlefield of hardcore pro wrestling. Dreamer strongly advised against this practice. It had little to do with the actual glass, but what is in those fluorescent lights.

He then painted a metaphor of the hardcore pro wrestling scene, but stressed that medical testing should always be part of the procedure.

"Light tubes are ridiculous. Here's why: inside there is cancer carcinogens inside it. So when you breathe that in, you're breathing in cancer. So that's stupid.

"You know what? If you look at it from a horror film [perspective]. There are people who like scary movies, there are people who like super scary movies, and there are people who like gore movies which are just out there for blood, guts and all that stuff. It's to each their own, but there have to be certain precautions because you have heard of -- 'oh, by the way, there's something called hepatitis.'

"Because you've heard of a wrestler who's doing hardcore matches when he knew he had HIV and that should never have happened. So there you go."

Dreamer opened up about the current trend of various pro wrestling companies working together. He said it is vital in order to survive with WWE alone at the top. Impact Wrestling is joining forces with other companies which is essential. The ECW Original continued to discuss how he hated the neverending presence of backstage politicking. He also discussed how the new regime in Impact Wrestling is doing their best to get rid of the negative stereotype previously associated with the product.

"All of these companies are working together. If you don't work together you will not survive in today's climate. WWE leads the way, cool. They have their own vision. Impact Wrestling, they have their own vision. They have their own fans, they have their own different match style. So does House Of Hardcore. All of these people are working together for the betterment of professional wrestling so how can I not get behind these guys?

"Something that's worse is the BS and the politics. I know that's my company's mantra, and I know because I've talked to them, Scott D'Amore and Don Callis. Don Callis works for New Japan Pro Wrestling. They are trying to get rid -- and they're doing a great job -- to get rid of that negative funk that has been through Impact Wrestling and try to get from the BS of it.

"A lot of people wanna deal with the behind the scenes crap and the internet wants to jump on that. Well you know they're putting on a really good product today. I know this because -- they let Bobby Lashley out of his contract. Look at what Bobby Lashley's doing in WWE. Great for Bobby Lashley and also great for Impact because it opened up a spot a spot for someone like a Pentagon to come in or debut in Impact Wrestling.

"It opened up a spot for Tessa Blanchard. She turned down a spot to go to WWE to work in Impact Wrestling. So stuff like that is what I love about wrestling. The BS and the politics is what I do not love. Because there is a bunch of men and women in WWE that are being wasted, they could make a huge difference in Impact Wrestling, in House Of Hardcore, and throughout the wrestling industry."

Tully Blanchard Reveals Why He Had Past Heat With Arn Anderson After WWE Firing

Former NWA United States, Television, and Tag Team Champion Tully Blanchard was a recent guest on Robbie E's Why It Ended podcast. Blanchard went into detail regarding why his relationship with NWA ended while he was wrestling under Jim Crockett Promotions, why his WWE stint was short, and how all of this led to his current role as a minister.

Blanchard revealed why his successful stint for JCP ended.

"It was not the fact of getting paid, it was signing contracts," said Blanchard. "When [Ted] Turner was hiring and buying the company, he was signing people to big contracts and other people had got the contracts, and they didn't sign Arn and I to a contract. So, it was job security as well as money. When you're the people who are selling tickets, when it's a sellout when the Road Warriors are beating you up, and it's not a sellout when they're beating somebody else up.

"[Jim] Crockett was negotiating with Turner to sell his company to Turner, and Turner was doing interviews with the key players, which I was one of, and we were instructed to be honest with everything. And I said, 'ok, I will.' So they asked me some questions, and I was honest with the answers, and Crockett didn't like my answers because the people at Turner asked him some questions that I guess were uncomfortable to be answered. And I wasn't smart enough to just sashay around the questions. I answered them. I'm just a plain old simple guy. So they politely kicked me off the plane, and told me I wasn't loyal, and so I said that I don't need to work here. And Arn and I dropped the titles the next night in Philadelphia."

Blanchard also revealed that he and Arn had a secret meeting in his house while they were with Crockett, and Vince stated that they had a job anytime they wanted. Blanchard stated that he was going to quit and go up to WWE alone, but he was pleasantly surprised that Arn went up with him. He and Arn dropped the titles to the Midnight Express, and he said goodbye to everyone. Blanchard added that the locker room was cold when he walked in after the dissension with the executives.

Thankfully, Blanchard and Arn as the Brainbusters achieved success in the WWE, winning the tag team championship and being asked by Dick Ebersol to compete at Saturday Night's Main Eventdue to being two of only a few other heels to be able to opposite Hogan on a big stage.

Although Blanchard did state that moving to WWE was a lateral move, he made a request to Jim Barnett to resurrect the original Four Horsemen. They made a request to leave WWE at Survivor Series 1989, and Arn made it but Blanchard did not due to admittedly failing a drug test for "licking the bag" of cocaine to "look like a party animal" after buying it for the women. However, they planned on heading to WCW to reform the Horsemen, and now was offered $750,000 to compete there. At the time, WCW did not have a drug policy, so he "did not see anything coming down the road that would be harmful."

WCW pulled out of the $750,000 deal for Tully, after Ric Flair called him on November 13, 1989, at 1:00 in the morning, due to WCW finding out that he was popped for a drug policy in WWE. Unfortunately, Blanchard stated that Arn Anderson's salary was reduced as well, which he had some heat with Arn for a while following this.

Now unemployed because of his decisions, Blanchard felt like everything was crashing in his life. At a state of rock bottom, Blanchard stated that he surrendered to God and felt an indescribable calmness. Since his conversion in 1989, Blanchard has mainly devoted himself to ministry, and still finds time to appear at conventions. Blanchard also had a brief stint in ECW in 1995, as well as competed on the Heroes of Wrestling debacle in 1999.

Impact Star Reportedly Taken To Hospital After MLW Match, Slammiversary Match In Question

At last night's Major League Wrestling Battleriot event, Rich Swann was taken to the hospital by ambulance after his match. Early word was Swann had a bad concussion that he sustained towards the end of his tag match (Swann and ACH vs. Teddy Hart and Davey Boy Smith Jr.).

Swann was scheduled to be involved in this Sunday's Impact Slammiversary XVI PPV in a Four-Way Match against Johnny Impact, Rey Fenix, and Taiji Ishimori. As of this writing Impact is watching the situation and working on a replacement if Swann isn't able to compete this weekend.

Brian Cage On What WWE Had Planned For Him Before He Was Released

Impact Wrestling star Brian Cage was recently interviewed by the The Roman Show to promote his upcoming match for the X Division championship against Matt Sydal at Slammiversary. In 2008, Cage made his debut in FCW. After seeing his look and athleticism, Dusty Rhodes pulled him aside and told him that he needs a character change.

"I am out there having awesome matches with Justin Gabriel, Tyson Kidd, Trent Barreta, and Dusty Rhodes pulls me to the office and goes, 'Let me tell you something baby. You are a phenomenal worker. You got to have something else. You can't be that. Hey Matt, what's that guy called the Honey Badger The Wolverine yeah. But you can't be the Wolverine because that's a trademark, so give me something else.'"

Cage became Kris Logan, and gained a short run with Justin Angel (Gabriel) as the FCW Tag Team Champions. Being impressive to the FCW staff, Cage was being groomed to move up to the main roster. Cage explained what WWE had planned for him before being released from the company.

"I went back, and I was looking through my trading cards and comics, and I said, 'I'll be like the Dark Claw which is Batman and Wolverine,'" Cage explained. "I made my attire off that, and they were going to bring me up, and then Hurricane came up and Dusty said, 'OK, we are thinking of feuding or teaming you with Hurricane.' So I started doing a bunch of heel promos but I got released."

Regarding his upcoming match at Slammiversary, Cage explained that he plans on calling it a different name when he wins it.

"He will lose the title, and I'll change it to the Weapon X Division title," said Cage. "It's a play on Wolverine, and I'll remain supreme, until I move over to another title."

Slammiversary will be held at the Rebel Entertainment Complex in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. We will have live coverage of the show this Sunday.

Tommy Dreamer Says WWE Offered Him 'A Lot Of Money To Close House Of Hardcore'

Tommy Dreamer recently took part in a media call to help promote his upcoming match against Eddie Edwards at Impact Wrestling's Slammiversary event on July 22nd. He was asked about balancing all of the various promotions he works for and whether he has signed a contract with anyone. Dreamer revealed he hasn't signed a deal even though WWE offered him one in 2015 when he returned to team with The Dudley Boyz in a six-man tag match against The Wyatt Family.

"I learned a lot of lessons in my life. Everyone talks about ECW and the greatness that was ECW and it was. But none of us ever knew that Paul Heyman was in bed with WWE the entire time. I had to live with those effects for a long, long time. I would not sign a contract with anyone. WWE asked me to sign a contract when I went back with The Wyatts and they offered me a lot of money to close House Of Hardcore and I refused."

Dreamer was asked if ECW would be even more successful if they existed today and had social media as a tool. He didn't seem too hopeful that a promotion like theirs would be able to survive in today's world. Several things have changed that would make it extremely difficult to remain the extreme rebels they used to be in today's litigious culture.

"Honestly, I think we'd be out of business and here's why," Dreamer explained. "Everything we did in ECW, most of it was illegal. Music, which was such a huge part of ECW we wouldn't be able to use. If you want to talk about conflicts and drama -- I mean we would have riots all the time.

"Now think of the era of the cell phone camera. Now think of we would after shows party with fans. Or have fights in bars. Or think about if stuff went down with the owner not paying people or even writing bad checks -- that's illegal. I said it on the WWE Network, most people want to b---h about Paul Heyman but most of them chose to stay."
