Ricochet Talks Difficulties Transitioning To WWE From Indies

Even though he's just 30 years old, Ricochet wrestled on the indies for 15 years before signing with WWE. The independent scene is entirely different than WWE as each promotion asks for something different from its wrestlers.
Ricochet talked about the difficulties in transitioning from the indies to WWE when he joined the State of Combat podcast.
"That was actually one of the things that I was looking forward to the most when I was getting signed was to come to the Performance Center to work on some of the parts that I wasn't really the best at," stated Ricochet. "I was learning from guys like Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Terry Taylor, Norman Smiley as far as character and promos, they would say things that are so obvious but I just wouldn't think about it. I was like, oh dude, you are totally right, and I felt like it really helped me out. Not even with promos and characters, even in the ring stuff that I thought I had ironed out they would tell me things that would make it even better and I would think how they made my process so much better and how I wasn't sure why I never thought about it. I have no complaints for my time at the Performance Center. It was great."
Some consider NXT to really be the crown jewel of WWE and say it's the best thing going under the entire WWE umbrella. In addition to meeting his girlfriend Kacy Catanzaro there, Ricochettalked about what makes NXT a special place to work.
"I will be honest with you, before I even signed with NXT I was like dude, NXT is the place to be right now. It only grew and grew. That 2018 year I personally always take the time and reflect and take in what is going on in the moment. At a time I could really feel the buzz and the fan support just grow and grow. We all felt that, which is why we wanted to go after those TakeOvers and do the best we can because we could feel the emotion and energy from the fans. That is why we really grew because we gave the energy right back, they gave it back to us and we gave it right back, so we definitely could feel that movement happening," said Ricochet.
"We would get our matches and we would wish each other the best of luck. We would say that our match would be the best of the night but you guys would be at a good second. We would say that to each other. We would joke around obviously, but then everyone would go out and try to kill it. I feel like you can take any match on an NXT TakeOver and flip it around and it would still be in the best order. But it was good, a lot of friendly competition, a lot of love. We all knew each other a long time before we got here so it is a new company and would want to grow it as much as possible and try to give it everything we got and help it grow."

Booker T Talks Cody Vs. Dustin Rhodes, If Wrestling Is Ready For Blood Again

AEW promised that they would be different than WWE. The company promised to focus more on wrestling, be more sport orientated and have matches that tell stories. The company held their debut event, Double or Nothing, last week, which featured a bloodbath in the Cody vs. Dustin Rhodes match.
Many fans were shocked at how bloody the match was, especially since WWE has been against the use of blood in matches for so long. However, on his Hall of Fame podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Booker T said that he feels that people are ready for this.
"If there is blood, people are going to tune in'" said Booker. "For Pay-Per-view you can step outside the box, be a bit edgier. That is why it is called Pay-Per-View because you are going to see more than you do on television, It's bigger. Something like that is needed for the business."
Pro wrestling has been mired in a 'PG era' state, however AEW is seeking an older audience. Booker T noted that kids are going to watch, but that blood should still be used.
"Kids are going to see it," Booker stated. "They said stuff like that would happen more on Pay-Per-View. If you are going to do that there is a place for it. If there is blood and you curse, it makes it a little bit more real."
Booker was a fan of the match between Cody and Dustin. Dustin was set to retire following the match, but Cody asked him to be his partner at AEW Fight for the Fallen against the Young Bucks' This match was a throwback, according to Booker.
"It was a bloodbath, they did everything. It was like a 1980's match, "Booker stated. "Goldie at 50 years old doesn't look like he missed a beat. He stepped away from this game and time off is your worst enemy, Goldie has never taken time off. How many times have you seen two brothers just go out there and fight, say were going to do it and just do it now? They did an angle where they had the fight and right after say we are going to tag in the next one. For those guys to be able to go out there and bring that style of wrestling back was great.

Austin Aries Talks Laying Low Since Leaving Impact Wrestling, Turning Down Six Figure Offer

You can bet Austin Aries isn't in the wrestling business for the money.
During a recent interview with Journal Sentinel, the former Ring of Honor, WWE, and TNA performer reportedly turned down a six figure deal.
Aries said that he declined the large monetary offer, as a means to reset.
"MLW had contact me previously about maybe wanting to come in and do some things with them, but it wasn't the right timing," Aries stated. I just decided for the first half of this year just to reset. I'm also in the mindset that at this point in my career, I don't really want to work for anybody. But I will with with anybody."
However, that will change tonight when Aries returns to his hometown of Waukesha, WI to face Adam Brooks for Major League Wrestling's Fury Road. Aries said he wanted to return to his hometown because its community understands who he actually is. Contrary to the Aries that the world has come to know.
"The people in Waukesha, they know the difference," Aries said. "The people there know my character. Not the character you see on the screen, but my character as a human being. There's a lot of people in this business that have gotten my character and my character mixed up."
According to Aries, it was he who reached out to MLW this time around.
"Then I actually reached out to MLW and I said to them, 'Hey guys, I know we talked a few months back and you had expressed some interest. It wasn't really the right time. I said, 'You're going to be in my hometown. That interests me.' I'm not motivated by money and I never really have been. I'm probably not motivated by a lot of things that people think I am.
"But this was an opportunity to come back home and see my family and see my friends," Aries continued. "That, to me, had a value that probably trumped anything creatively or monetarily, you know?"
Austin Aries was released from WWE in mid 2017 before returning to TNA in early 2018

Sean Waltman On Why Cody Vs. Dustin Rhodes Was Match Of The Night At "AEW Double Or Nothing"

At Double or Nothing, Cody vs. Dustin Rhodes wasn't the main event or even the penultimate match, but it was still the best match on the card according to Sean Waltman who discussed it on his X-Pac 1,2,360 podcast.
"It was the best match of the night. Nothing against [anyone else], because when you say that, some people go 'that's a put down on other matches' - because there were great matches. I mean arguably, one of the best pay-per-views, some people say ever. From their minds, just because of the significance of it all that was the best match of the show," said Waltman.
The match had a great build-up and will billed as more of a generation vs. generation match rather than just a brother vs. brother match. But Waltman says what made the match itself so good was the in-ring chemistry between the two which led to lots of high spots and very few dull moments.
"If you go by the crowd reaction, and the sustained heat from beginning to end… there's great matches to where the people are going f***ing ape sh*t and there's parts of the match where they are dead f***ing quiet until they get them going again. Even some of the really great matches that have been talked about recently, you'll find quiet spots in those matches that ideally you don't want to have. And this match didn't have that," stated Waltman. "People were crazy the whole way through from what I can tell. It was so great, just I mean you know when I talk about the really important stuff is not the moves, it's the stuff in between the moves and that's all the sh*t that they did here. The stuff they did in between the moves was brilliant. It was just so great.
"I am so happy for both of those guys but Dustin especially. Because Dustin, he's admittedly been very open about his struggles and all that and a lot of that has to do with self image and not thinking as high enough about yourself as you should. So, when I see him go out there and do that and everyone piling praise on him for it; that he deserves it, just makes me really happy for him."
After the match, the brothers embraced and put an end to their feud. The Rhodes' brothers are united again and will team up at Fight for the Fallen on July 13 where they will take on The Young Bucks.

I Guess This Picture Says A Thousand Words. :)

What more needs to be said? :)

Tony Khan On Why AEW Won't Be Using Scripted Promos, Their Appeal To Young Adults

AEW promised to be unlike any other wrestling promotion out there and that started with their inaugural event Double or Nothing. The lead up to it featured lots of social media vignettes and that was all by design according to president Tony Khan.
Khan discussed AEW tapping into a younger adult audience when he joined Busted Open Radio.
"It was a conscious effort but not surprised by it," said Khan. "It's been basically our audience is younger. This show was very different than our social media. This pay per view was not like an episode of Being the Elite...
"I think there is something about social media now where people are more engaged with their celebrities and their sports stars than ever before. People can spot a phony and I think young people can spot a phony. I think young people can spot when people believe what they are saying and when people aren't believing what they are saying, and when I was a kid, I really did believe what Ric Flair and Randy Savage and Bret Hart said in their promos. I think there has to be some believability."
Khan then brought up the use of scripted promos in wrestling and inferred that AEW won't be using those very often, if at all.
"When you see a guy reading off a teleprompter or a mental teleprompter, just trying to recite a script or trying to look up in the air when you forget a line. It is hard to suspend disbelief when the wrestler doesn't believe in the real-life situation that is unfolding. So like I said, I am not surprised that we are drawing young viewers; it was part of the plan going in," stated Khan.
"Being the Elite is going to be a lot different than the wrestling show that we do, but that is the point. We are going to provide a serious, sports-based product from bell to bell, along the lines of what you saw from Double or Nothing. Something you are going to notice more and more is that things are going to take place in and around the ring. We are not going to go out of the arena. We are not going to spend half the show backstage in dressing rooms or backstage in choreograph segments. I am really interested in focusing on the matches and there are plenty of times outside the matches to focus on storyline advancements, to focus on the funny sketches and we can do all that, and nobody does that comedy better than our guys.
"There is nothing funnier than Being the Elite but there is a time and a place for it and that is why before The Bucks and Lucha Bros went out to settle their issues which is a really serious issue between these teams. And to go out and have a very serious, excellent wrestling match to tell the story of the issue that is taking place between the teams, that is why we weren't doing a comedy bit right before the guys went into the ring because it was a serious match, a great match and there is a time and place for everything. That is why we didn't have Matt Jackson make Michael Nakazawa jokes during the match because that stuff is amazing. People love Being the Elite but you also don't want to do haha funny when you are doing a serious wrestling show and we have a great balance between the two and I think we are going to keep doing that."
Along the lines of AEW being more sports-oriented than what fans are used to seeing in pro wrestling, Khan will be having select performers address the media after an event just as athletes in most sports do.
"I really don't know any other way, honestly," Khan said of AEW being more sports-oriented. "We come from the NFL and English Football. For me I have been to a hundred of post-fight, post-match performances and I really don't know any other way than to be open with you guys. I have always had a great relationship with media who has covered our team. Us, as the Khan family, we don't know any other way than to be open and sharing with you guys. I really enjoy interacting with you guys and everyone in the post-fight scrums. We did this one but we have also done one after doing our debut press-conferences, we have all gone out and spoken with the media. Cody, The Young Bucks and I really do enjoy it. I think the fans enjoy it. I am glad you guys enjoy it. Most importantly, I am glad it makes your jobs easier because I really want you guys to enjoy it."

Jon Moxley Says Vince McMahon's Way Of Producing Wrestling Is Killing WWE

Jon Moxley, f.k.a. Dean Ambrose, appeared on the latest edition of Talk Is Jericho, which dropped today. The episode was recorded late last week. We recapped the incidents that led to Moxley knowing for sure that he was leaving the company here, however he also spoke in depth about the problems with the creative process in WWE.
One of the major creative hurdles with the company is their over-scripting of promos. Moxley noted that promos used to be one of his favorite aspects of pro wrestling, but he was dreading them by the time he left the company.
"They take wrestling away from you," Moxley said. "Wrestling is my first love and my only love besides my wife. It's the thing I'm most passionate about, I love it. I feel like I got it back finally. Since I was a little kid, I was always watching tapes, always thinking of promos. I wanted to watch all the wrestling, I loved pacing around the house thinking of promos, waking up in the middle of the night and just thinking of a cool line or a way to tell the story of a match.
"Promos used to be my favorite part of wrestling. I loved it! They ended up becoming my least favorite part, the part I dread. Because now it's not me coming up with ideas and coming up with ways for me to hook you into our story, it means me trying not to look like an idiot... Sitting down with a writer, that is not how it is supposed to be!"
During the interview, Moxley discussed his return to WWE last summer from injury. He said that he was motivated to return and was working out profusely, even though he felt "shackled" creatively at the time. He said that he was thinking of ideas for his return, only to realize that the company wouldn't go for it.
"I was so excited to come back to wrestling, but I was not excited to come back to WWE," Moxley said. "I was picturing myself in other places, I was picturing myself coming back to like CZW. I was picturing myself in Japan. Anywhere but WWE.
"My particular type of charisma, Vince [McMahon] just can't just let me be. He's got to put a hat on me or put me in a goofy vehicle. For whatever reason, me and Vince are like Mentos and Diet Coke together, we just create this explosion of goofy nonsense that I detest."
Moxley flew to Stamford, Connecticut to meet with Vince about his return. He had said that he wanted to come back as a heel to change his character because he hated it. He looked at the return as an opportunity to reinvent himself. He met with Vince again later to discuss his return as it was getting closer about, but was told that The Shield was already advertised for a show in Australia in October so there's no way that he'll be a heel before that. He was also told that he would basically be returning as Seth Rollins' partner, which he loves doing, but it was more of the same.
"Basically their idea of me coming back was exactly what everybody expected," Moxley said. "No shock, nothing different, just good ol' Lunatic Fringe. That's it."
WWE wanted Moxley to return the week before SummerSlam, but Moxley convinced them to have it be at the pay-per-view. Moxley said he was deflated with how he'd return, but he continued to train hard and then got a call that it would be the week before SummerSlam, as they originally discussed. Moxley also mentioned Rollins' promo introducing him back where he told Dolph Ziggler that if Ziggler's going to have a "Scottish Psychopath" in his corner, then he'll have a lunatic in his. Moxley felt that the verbiage cheapened the original pop as opposed to if they would have just hit his music.
"It's a small example of they ruin everything!" Moxley exclaimed. "How do you screw that up? Hit the button, play the music! It's like they have to get their hands in it, they have to justify their jobs or something. It's a great example of overproducing everything."
Moxley said that he was leaving WWE regardless of what other companies were out there. He said that he would have left even if there were no other promotions in existence.
When it was time to renew his contract, Moxley said that he was "relishing the opportunity" to say that he wasn't interested. When he finally was told over Royal Rumble weekend this past January that he would be presented the new contract that Monday at RAW, Moxley said that he couldn't hold it in anymore and exclaimed that he's gone as soon as his contract expires. He said he wouldn't change his mind, it was something he thought about for a long time, it wasn't an emotional decision, but he was done.
Moxley talked about WWE issuing a press release after rumors of his departure started, which was unprecedented. Moxley doesn't know why it was sent, other than Vince probably wanted to control the narrative.
"[Vince] has got the Million Dollar Man complex," Moxley stated. "That's why he pays Brock [Lesnar] billions of dollars to come in and ruin his company. Because he wants to own Brock. He wants to be like, 'Brock's my attraction!' A guy he has no power over (me), he doesn't know how to handle it."
Moxley revealed that he never looked at his new contract when it was offered. Moxley said he felt something akin to a physical depression during his time, because the company "takes away something that you love." He said that they take away the talents promos because they have writers, they can't come up with cool things in matches because of the producers and they can't come up with intriguing storylines because of the writers.
Moxley said that there would be days where he would just lay in bed because he'd be dreading the conversations with the writers. He said that once his departure became real, he feels like a new person. He added that he's excited with his opportunities with AEW and plans to prove that the WWE creative process is wrong.
"I want to prove that [WWE's] creative process sucks," Moxley stated. "It does not work, it's absolutely terrible. I've said that to Vince, I've said that to Hunter, I've said that Michael Hayes. I can't even tell you how their system works, it's some kind of system of meetings that take place in Stamford, then there's a home team. There's writers and producers and production meetings and nobody knows what's approved and what's not.
"The bureaucratic red tape that you have to go through to get anything approved is crazy! It doesn't work! It's killing the company and I think Vince is the problem. And not so much Vince, but whatever the structure that he built around himself probably starting around 2002 after the sale of WCW and this infrastructure of writers, producers and this is what the WWE is and what the product is, and the product sucks. [They have] great talent, amazing talent. None of this is their fault.
"If I had a goal with AEW, that's that if we can prove that Vince's way sucks. That's not what I'm going to focus on, because it's not about competing with WWE. We're just going to be over here doing our best and putting on our best product. If a byproduct of that is that it pushes WWE to re-evaluate their creative process and it makes Vince - not that he's going to step aside because we all know that he's going to die in the chair - but maybe he'll listen to someone else's ideas. Maybe he'll be open to doing it a different way."
