"How Simple Can It Be"? Article On Booking Simple Angles I Just Wrote.

I find it funny that the 'creative' in WWE and Impact (I can probably add ROH too) seem to have a hard time 'creating' things that truly get over with fans. WWE Micromanages so much that they've forgotten that the simplest things have helped get an angle or feud over. Impact with Don “I'm going to get rid of the silliness in Impact' Callis, who with Scotty D'Amore books and writes the 'silliness' that's STILL in Impact Wrestling also has forgotten how simple things are way more effective.

So instead of saying the examples that prove my point, I'm going to show them. Because proof is a mother fucker and the proof shows, I'm very correct in this opinion.

David Von Erich vs Terry Gordy from World Class Championship Wrestling. This has always been my first 'go to' when it comes to simple angles that work. Kevin Von Erich was injured by the Freebirds so he couldn't wrestle Buddy Roberts, so David substituted for Kevin, Gordy for Roberts and if you watch the match. You'll see how well that went over. No scripted promos no micromanaging every little detail, just simple straight up angle between two stables that helped further their ongoing feud.

Bobby Heenan burns Pepper Gomez with a lit cigar. Long before Johnny Valiant's 'Dream Team' did it to Barry Windham in the WWF (and other examples I'm sure I can come up with) 1974 in Bob Luce/ Dick The Bruiser's WWA in Indiana is where this originated from. Another simple angle to hype up an upcoming house show (your know, when house shows actually MEANT SOMETHING? Remember how that used to be? ) If Gomez wins then Heenan doesn't come out and manage in the main event. Heenan was good even back then. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHsYr-52wRw

Roddy Piper confronts Matt Borne. This is from Don Owens Pacific Northwest Wrestling's “Portland Wrestling” show. Art Barr (Known as Beetlejuice at the time, and later in WCW as 'The Juicer”) was getting bullied by Matt Bourne, Piper makes the save and a hair vs hair match is booked. Very simplistic but very effective and by how the fans reacted to it, got over well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpnW_DcYU_I

Jerry 'The King' Lawler vs Kerry Von Erich (AWA World Title vs World Class World Title) This is from the Sporttorium in Dallas Texas. The very first time Lawler and Von Erich faced each other. Lawler pops Kerry before the match, it's 'alleged' that Lawler's glove is loaded, and enhances the title vs title rivalry. One move in one match that yeilds lots of heat. See how simple this is? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrGrP98AOQA

So there you go, Four different examples from three different wrestling federations, on how simple it is to do angles that work. Maybe WWE and Impact should take notes from these examples so they can go back to remembering how simple it used to be, and can still be. It's pretty sad that indy groups that run weekly shows book more simply and get over more stuff than the major feds do.. Another lesson maybe the major feds should go and re-learn.
